I currently live in Irondale and have heard terrible things about the school system in general and especially regarding special education needs. My 2 1/2 year old was recently diagnosed with high functioning autism. He will get services from Early Intervention for now, but once he turns 3, it is up to the public school system to provide services. Anyone have a child on the spectrum that is happy with the services in your city? Thanks.
My son is high functioning autistic also and he is 4 years old. Right now he goes to Epic elementary. They started an autism Pre-K this year. It is in Birmingham and I've been pleased with the progress my son has made. I think the class starts at 3 year olds, my sons class has 3 year olds in it. They have a website and you should be able to get more info there. Hope this helps.69371
I am in a great school system.... The Oak Mountain Schools and in Elementary School the Teachers were GREAT with autistic children and the get to have the chance to interact with other kids who are like them and they also get to interact with people who don't have special needs and they are always nice to them!!!! The grades in he Elementary School are Preschool-Third and then they go to the Intermediate, then the Middle, then the High School. They have a website which you can learn more from but the school is in Shelby County/ Birmingham.... I hope this Helped!!! :)71482
