The main problem with this school is it's administration. I have found many teachers I like but trying to deal with the administration has become more trouble than it's worth.
The chosen few students are taken care of at PJHS. We tried for three days to meet with a school official, which is a school rule, to enroll our child. The administration is very rude and there is no recourse for the offensive way that parents are treated. There are not enough electives nor enough extracurricular activities for academic achievers. We are really surprised by the poor attitude of the school officials. The administration is the main problem with this school.
With an enrollment of almost 1200 in 7th and 8th grades, PJHS is a testament to how large schools should be run. I take exception to the comment about how the dress code is 'arbitrary.' It is mandated county-wide and is enforced with an eye towards squashing gang membership and inappropriate attire. The school is funded at the bottom of the barrel for per student expenditures, but despite this lack of funding, SAT scores are second highest in the state, behind only Mountain Brook in Birmingham. I would love for the people who criticize the administration to spend a week doing the administrator's job in a school this size with the vast range of student ability. A dedication to hard work and positive attitudes makes the school enjoyable. Students are able to join advanced classes, a wide variety of clubs and sports, education competitions; it's an exemplary place. Go Cats!
We liked it for the year we were there, but it's really big. The buses have 2 runs to get all the kids to and from school.
Prattville Junior High School is unfairly rated. Pre-Algebra is an advanced course in 8th grade, after we pass it in 7th. Pre-Algebra is different in 8th grade, harder. Their are plenty of electives besides band. Drama, Keyboarding, Technology, and Language art. The dress code in strict, but that's because they want to make people look pretty much the same. Not being able to wear your favorite hat isn't that important. there are a lot on extracurricular activities: Beta Club, Student Council, the Crisian one, and a fe I can't remember. There are bunches of rewards for doing your best in Prattville Junior High School.
Once we learned we were moving to montgomery alot of research was done on the school districts. We chose p.J.H.S due to what we researched. Averages(a b in a failing school system is still failing) Our children were put into a pre-algebra class, which they passed the yr before and told that they would not be put into algebra 1. 51/2 Weeks later after much paperwork, hassle, emails and a letter to dr.Morton(state super)were they put into the appropriate class. Children and parents are treated poorly. This school is horrible.
PJHS is one of the greatest schools in the state. They have the some of the highest SAT scores and the programs let my child go to the National Beta Convention, win scholarships, and make new friends. There is a dress code for a reason and I am very proud that they enforce it. School is not about 'flaunting' it is about learning and it would not be a learning enviroment without this code. My child loved the Junior High and it is one of the safest schools. My nieces school has had bomb threats, gun threats, and constant fights right in our area. I am proud for my child to come home and say that she recieved another A or has done something signifigicant. The teachers are fantastic and so are the administrators! Thanks PJHS you gave my daughter the learning oppurtunity of a lifetime!
PJHS has been a source of frustration trouble for our family for two years now. Our daughter attended 7th and 8th grade there and our son is now a 7th grader there as well. The quality of the teachers is mediocre, at best. Aside from football, the school has almost no sports program worth talking about. Other than band, there really are no extracurricular activities. Unfortunately, the biggest problem is the administration. The principal has made arbitrary restrictions in the dress code that are neither mandated by the county, nor justified in any way. One of the vice principals threatened my son during the first week of class with expulsion simply for asking questions about the dress code. Supervision is grossly inadequate. If there were any other option in Prattville, we would take it as soon as possible.
