My daughter finished kindergarten here, and every day I discover another amazing thing that she learned there. The multi-sensory approach to education is both rigorous and kid-centered. She is way ahead of her cousins in other kindergartens. The teachers and staff are so caring and upbeat, it makes it a pleasure to visit the school. And the new principal is a great stabilizing force. The research is right: this is the best elementary school in Ketchikan.

Do not send your child to this school unless your child can learn in a open class room and no teacher help class room setting, student has to be self motivated to do well here

My son has gone to Tongass School for four years, and my daughter for two, and they have both done great! They have had dedicated, caring teachers, and almost everyone on the staff is super!

My child started going to this school in 1st grade and she loves it! She is learning a lot and loves learning. This school has a friendly, caring atmosphere. They do a lot more hands on learning than the public schools, which the kids love! I cannot say enough about this school, it is awesome!

About the tests

In 2010-2011 Alaska used the Standards Based Assessment (SBA) to test students in grades 3 through 10 in reading, math and writing, and in grades 4, 8 and 10 in science. The SBA is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Alaska. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.
