Kids at this school have incredible access to top quality fine arts programs. Every kid plays an instrument. The school even has a chess program! Many of the classes include innovative professional / community based curricula that really stimulates kids. In general, the school (and the district) is what you make of it - every year many kids go to Ivy League schools, but apathy is also common. My kid loves his teachers, and misses being in school after just a couple days of vacation.

poor leadership, academic programs are sub-standard, communication is poor, teachers lack motivation to make students strive to do their best.

About the tests

In 2010-2011 Alaska used the Standards Based Assessment (SBA) to test students in grades 3 through 10 in reading, math and writing, and in grades 4, 8 and 10 in science. The SBA is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Alaska. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.
