My children attended Settler's Point Elementary when Lana Moore was principal. I was very impressed with how she handles everyday situations at the school. When there was a problem at the school she thoroughly investigated the matter until it was resolved and the appropriate consequences were given. I feel she treats everyone fairly and with respect.
The principal, Lana Moore, is refusing to stop bullying. A fifth grade boy is being physically assaulted every day by a fifth grade girl, a girl who is threatening other students. Principal Moore's only response has been to put the students in seperate classrooms, and threaten expulsion if they speak to each other, a threat she has not carried through on, as the girl is still verbally abusing the boy and other students. Why are the pillars of character and bully policy not being upheld, where is the DCO? What about the agreement all students sign at the beginning of the year? Where is the adult supervision at this school? Pairs of students wandering the playground in green t-shirts is obviously not enough playground supervision.
Our family is extremely happy with Settler's Point. All of the teachers that my kids have had have been wonderful and Mrs. Moore provides tremendous leadership. She is involved in every aspect of the school. The PTSO and Dad's Club are extremely active and welcoming and raise a lot of extra funds for the school. The staff are always friendly and helpful. I feel that my children are getting a solid education from teachers and staff who really care about them.
Our kids are in 4th grade and 1st grade at Settler's Point. They have had a wonderful transition from a previous Charter School that was not helping our oldest enough with his IEP. Our son is now flourishing in his 4th grade class and has a lot of support with a resource teacher and his main teacher Mr. Nash, who is awesome. More monitoring needs to be done on kids behavior on the bus, but overall it has been a great experience.
My daughter had a great 1st grade class and loves school. Settler's Point is a great school.I am very pleased with all the staff and teachers there. So I will also send my twins to kindergarten there.
Can anyone give me information or feedback regarding the autism class? I am a parent that just moved from the Tempe School District and has a 7 year old that will need to attend this class, I want make sure I am making the best choice for her.
My daughter is in Kindergarten at Settler's Point this year. I really agonized over where to send her to school (charter, private, public) and I am so happy that I chose our neighborhood school for her. Mrs. Moore (principal) is very involved and is always available. We have loved all of the events that are planned for families such as science night, family reading night, movie and restaurant nights. It makes us feel like we are part of a school community. My daughter's teacher (Mrs. Ence) has been great. She has learned so much since August! We are really pleased with this school.
We have been with Settlers Point since the 2nd grade and my son has really flourished here. He is 6th grade now and has become so passionate about science, reading and math. We just returned from science camp, which was a fantastic way to end our time at this great school. The principal and teachers are very enthusiastic and really care for these kids. Mrs. Usrey (6th grade) and Mrs. Caperton (ALP - Math/Language) have been awesome. I can't say enough good things. But Thank you!
I have been part of this school for a long time... my kids have both attended since Kindergarten, one is still in the school and one is now in Junior High. I love Settlers (despite the parent pick-up/drop off disaster... but as long as non-kindergarten parents show up and block the pick up line at 2:30 so the kindergarten parents can't get in and out, it will continue to be a mess). Love, love, love 99% of the teachers. They are truly exceptional. My kids are very different and have very different needs... Settlers takes that into account when matching students to teachers each year so the students' needs can be best met. In eight years I've only seen one truly bad teacher there, and she's gone now. I've heard Gilbert is the best school district in Arizona, I think that makes Settlers the best of the best. And I'm picky!
I also left Higley District and brought my 3 children to Settler's Point. For the first time in 4 years my oldest daughter said she loves school. Settler's Point has a great staff that truly cares about their students. The support staff is great and great with the kids. I absolutly love how the parents get involved. There is not only an active and supportive PTSO but their is also a Dads club that is wonderful. There are great activities and fundraisers that support the school. Overall my children and I are happy with the school and couldn't ask for anything better.
We left Higley district to attend Settler's Point and so far I am pleased with the school. It is safe, organized and run with a great deal more experience and professionalism than we ever witnessed in the other district. Staff is helpful, knowledgeable and available- teachers are experienced, committed and stable. The principal is always around, working hard and is very kind and seems to really know her stuff. Pick-up/Drop-off is a mess, but it's clear they have done all they can do with that and it just is what it is. Walking or busing is probably best. All in all, I'm very happy with the education and attention my kids are receiving here.
I couldn't disagree more about leadership issues or parent involvement. In the years our current Principal has been there, the school has done very well!!! All of our test scores are higher, and none of our children, or their families complain about anything at the school. As a Dads' Club member for 6 years I can tell you that every year, we beg for members to join. If your definition of encouragement to be involved means to come to your home, pick you up and then lavish you praise for helping, then no you would not be encouraged to be involved. It is all in how you see it.
The principal has some major issues w/ leadership. The safety issue at parent pick-up is crazy! Parents are NOT encouraged to be involved.
The school is great! Our two girls (3rd and 4th grade)love the faculty, and we appreciate the effort we see to challenge the students abilities. While it is true, there are many families that do not spend much time on learning at home, we see our kids test scores consistently above the district and national averages. This couldn't be done without great educators and good leadership. Our kids take the bus most of the time, so the drop-off/pick-up issue isn't that much of a challenge for us. From what I have seen though, if people would just be as polite as their kids, it would be much easier. There are a lot of great activities put on by the Dads' Club. Movie Nights, Cosmic Bowling, etc... Overall it is a great place for your children to be learning. Make it better by participating and being active in their school.
The school is academically outstanding, teacher and regular staff are wonderful...the pick up/drop off and parking needs to be addressed though before a child is injured it is just a mess out there.
We have been overall pleased with my son's experience at Settler's Point. The upper grade resource teacher is excellent. She goes out of her way to help students. The principal has addressed our concern also. Some teachers will not respond to parent emails and phone calls. The office staff seems generally competent and caring.
I have really enjoyed Settlers Point so far. My child began in Jan 06 for the second half of 2nd grade. Our teacher was not great, (she's gone now) but overall I liked the school. Academics are tougher and broader in Gilbert then our previous state. I love the Chess club. My child enjoyed the summer VIK program and VIK after school is convenient. For 3rd grade, our teacher this year is new but fantastic! The Music program was really cute! I love that I can email her for issues/concerns and get bi-weekly progress on every grade my child receives. I love the interaction and really feel they deserve the Excelling Rating they have worked hard to achieve. Overall it's been a very good experience.
I really like this school...Most of the teachers are excellent - teach to different levels of the children (advanced learning and reading programs, etc). Not crazy about the principal - but she does listen to parent concerns. My kids have gone thru k - 3rd grade so far and they both love it. Very safe environment and lots of extra activities (i.e. Science club, choir, etc). The before-and-after school program is not the best format (basically an open gym forum) - but it is available if needed.
Our kindergarten experience at Settlers Point was very positive. We were very pleased with the quality of the teacher. She did an excellent job preparing our son for first grade. There was an excellent mix of academic and field trip experiences.
