Highly disappointed with EMES. This school puts an extreme amount of pressure on their students. My child is expected to be perfect and to remember every little thing that she is told. If she misses one thing she is punished through the teachers "reward" system. Anyone who has a seven year old knows that no one is perfect. What a way to teach children to love school. My child comes home at least three days a week so upset because she feels that she is a failure because she can not meet her teachers expectations. I thought we found a great school but I was very wrong. Even when we have asked to see the principal, she is always too busy and we are treated as though we are not important enough to be seen. The only children that are treated equally are those whose parents are highly involved within the school. Needless to say we will be looking for a new school and advise anyone who is considering this school to keep on looking elsewhere.
My children have been attending this school for 2 years now. We love it! The teachers are wonderful and very good at addressing concerns. I don't agree with the previous post about minority children. My children are of minority and they are treated VERY well. However, I do have some complaints. Academically my children are struggling more since the IB has been set in motion. I think my kids struggle more trying to get the projects done. It's too much . It's stressful for the kids as well as the parents. It's very time consuming. It seems there is less focus on Math and more focus on projects. My daughter struggles in math and has never had difficulty before. My husband, who is very good in math, has to Google how to complete a math problem to help her. This has just been my experience anyway. I think the projects that are assigned are too hard for their age level. They require a lot of parental assistance.
I am saddened by the perception of the parent that posted the last review. As principal, all students are treated with respect and dignity. The teachers and myself always have strategies and ideas in place to support students of all academic need. I encourage this parent to contact myself so this can be resolved. I would love to be able to address this situation immediately.
I was hoping that this was not the case, but I tend to agree with the parent in regards to the treatment a child of a minority gets. I feel that the teachers, as well as the principal do not tend to care about my daughter's success at this school. When she is struggling, I have to do most of the correspondence. Not once, did any of her teachers reach out to me to discuss academic concerns in regards to her. When conferences were held, it was 98% my daughter's fault at to why she was not performing well, which I find to be absolutely degrading to her as a student. It is the responsibility of the teacher and staff to make sure she has what she needs to succeed. This is to include homework and assignment information, which as a 36 y/o physician, I have a hard time understanding. Again, this is only if she receives instructions. I am very disappointed, not only with the lack of teacher concern but no improvements or realistic suggestions as to how we can help her. Obviously, this does not happen with all of the children, which causes even more pause for me as the parent of a minority child. Very frustrated
Estrella Mountain Elementary is dedicated to the growth of its staff and students. Our Principal works hard to recognize our strengths and weaknesses while supporting us to grow in our profession. We have strong grade level teacher collaboration and across the grade level team work. Our students are stepping up to the plate to meet the demands of the Common Core curriculum as well as learning and living the expectations and rigor of being an International Baccalaureate student. Our parents and community members show their support daily through PTO, coaching extra-curricular activities, volunteering in classrooms, the office, and around the campus. Our campus is a place where families, staff, and students should be honored to call their school.
My school is dedicated to student achievement. Our vision has led us to the path of becoming an International Baccalaureate school, where we strive to "develop global citizens of good character who excel academically and socially to meet the challenges of a dynamic world by educators in a supportive environment that values varied perspective." I look forward to every day!
I love the students, staff and parents. Everyone is kind, supportive and respectful. Best school I have worked at!
We LOVE EMES! Deeply academically focused with it's International Baccalaureate program. Family friendly - we are all welcome! Problem solving on a team level - from the principal, to the teachers & coaches! Super well rounded - strong academics, great extra curriculars, and sports!
I am a PTO board member and I parent volunteer. So many wonderful parents and teachers come together to make this school great!
I am a student who has been going to the school since kindergarten and my teachers have always been kind and taught us well. I have never seen any kids be rascist, and any bullying that has gone on was stopped or a miniscule problem. I have ADHD and my teachers dealt with me well as a hyperactive five-year old, I am in the National Honor society now and try to excel in schoolwork. There are a few different clubs to join including Science Olympiad, a math-club, and various sports to participate in over the year. I enjoy this school and was never bullied too much, I have enough friends and like all my teachers enough that I would not want to move from my school versus any others I've heard of.
Estrella is an amazing school. The teachers are wonderful, the curriculum is top notch, the principal is cares about our kids and is on top of what needs to be done. The parents are very involved! I love this school!
My son started school at Joy Christian School and had many outstanding teachers. In March 2011 my son started school at EMES, and in August 2011 he started fifth grade and was assigned to Mr. Hegedus. I spent four years in Wichita Falls, Texas as a substitute teacher and experienced the teachings of many teachers, but I have got to say that Mr. Hegedus is by far the best teacher I have ever had the privilege of knowing. If you ever get the chance to have Mr. Hegedus as your child's teacher, it will be the best experience of your life and your child's life. Mr. Hegedus not only taught my son the skills to master higher education, but he also taught him to be a responsible, caring student. I also want to say that we, too, experienced bullying of my son when he first arrived at EMES, and the principal put a stop to it immediately. She also handled another situation with one of the school's teachers involving my son, and the next year the teacher was no longer teaching at EMES. I look forward to another school year at EMES.
Unfortunately in a forum such as this untrue things are sometimes posted by people who have an agenda, which clearly the previous writer has. My children have gone to this school for several years and I have NEVER experienced any type of racism at all. The staff is caring and kind, and the principal is very good. This students who attend this school do very well on AIMS and that is in large part to attending an exceptional school.
There are a few good teachers. But if your child is dark or comes from a different ethnicity that child will be ignored and picked on by the other children. I had heard that the school was rasict. It wasn't until my child started going that I realized those comments were true!
This school is great and getting better all the time. The staff is excellent, music program is exceptional, and the staff is increasing academic rigor through the International Baccalaureate Program. The discipline in the junior high is dramatically better this year. Parent involvement is increasing due to a great PTO. Keep up the good work.
We have been attending EMES since my 6th grader was in Kindergarten and we love everything about this school. This year has been especially exciting as they have added a wonderful music program that included choir, jazz band and concert band. The teachers are extremely devoted to the children and my children are receiving a quality education.
My daughter is in Kinder. Her teacher is amazing. However, I do question the schools other staff including principal. My daughter was yelled at in the lunch room by the disciplinarian because she was disagreeing with two other students. This woman yelled at my daughter and scared her so badly, she threw up. My daughter went all day upset and had no lunch. The staff never called me to tell me about it. I found out after school when I picked her up. During the meeting with the principal I was told I would receive a follow up call and never did. Not very caring, I'd say.
The staff is irrational, and do not think of the childs best interest, and do not farely discipline the children.
My daughter is a kindergartener here and so far we are exstatic about her new learing environment. Her teacher, Mrs. E., is outstanding ... she's engaged with her students and is very imaginative and outgoing. The class sizes are small (my daughter's class has 12 students) and the classrooms are exciting and inviting. The after-care program (for students whose parents can't pick them up right at the last bell) is wonderful and is way more than we thought it would be. It's an extended learing environment where the kids get exercise, library time and time in the computer lab. Our daughter gets picked up around 5:30 every day and she doesn't want to leave. This is a great school with great leadership and staff who foster a fantastic learning environment.
overall a great school, wonderful parent teacher organization. Academically speaking the teachers are some of the best around. My daughter started there in 5th grade and is now in 7th, she loves it. Food is pretty nutrional. overall 4.5 stars.
