The leadership is always in flux. The school board is an odd mix of retirees and small-town yokels. Teachers who keep their head down and focus on their work avoid politics of which there is a lot of drama.
The special needs department here is seriously lacking. Needs updating on modern procedures and laws. No clear leadership for the special needs community. Dialogue in classrooms in not always encouraged. Teachers need to have a more open learning style where dialogue is encouraged not just 'do as i say".
There should be 2.5 stars for 'below average'. There are a few shining stars that make this school worth while. You will have to hope for the best and keep your fingers crossed. It's a very unorganized school that needs to catch-up with more modern ways of doing things, but this could just be an Arizona thing. Administration could be a little friendlier and the school suffers from a healthy dose of small-town politics. Expect to not always know what's happening unless you're a helicopter parent, of which there are many. Things were beginning to improve with Dr. Hagerman but now it looks like he is leaving so everyone should just keep their fingers crossed.
My son is wrapping up his Kinder year at Continental. I am impressed at how well he is doing in reading, writing and math. He is in the Spanish Immersion class. I wish he was getting a small amount of homework in Spanish. Things aren't perfect but overall I am extremely pleased with the Kinder level education and teachers. This school has been around for a 100+ years & yet they have hiccups that are similar to a new school. Communication about school events is horrible. The spirit week flier came home at the end of the day on Tuesday of the same week they were celebrating! We missed out on two days of the trends. The Christmas program was confusing we had no info about where to take our kids for the performance. The school doesn't have a Facebook page (PTC does thankfully) but it should really acquire one like all other schools. The website needs an update, the Spanish immersion flyer on the website doesn't work. You can't find preschool, after school or summer program info or forms on the site. We also need a payment system I can't believe we still have to drop off checks or cash for school programs and lunches. A great school but really needs to embrace technology for parents!
I was concerned about the academic environment my girls would endure when moving here in 2008. The teachers truly care about the students and that in itself makes up for the lack of state funding. The new buildings have transformed the school from an eyesore to a beautiful K-8 campus. The one and only negative review is not wholly true. Continental has made leaps and bounds since 2009 and all the pieces are now in place. Your child will get a quality education if your an involved parent - plain and simple.
I couldn't ask for better teachers and staff. I feel the school only lacks in what they do not have funding for, i.e. new desks, sporting facilities. The new buildings for preschool and kinder are wonderful. I have heard from so many parents upon finding out my children go there is how much they love Continental and how glad they were that their children attended there. My children have grown so much and learned so much from the caring teachers and staff in such a short time. I think the administration has come a long way and is working hard to make it an all around great school.
