My husband and I have moved around the US quite a bit for his work. I have two children that are currently in 6th grade at Gateway. In all their years of schooling and in the numerous schools they have been in they have always been successful, hardworking students. I'm not one of those parents that is here to tell you that my children are gifted and are not getting the attention they need. They are your everyday children that have strengths and weaknesses. They did A-B work consistently and were mathletes. Since being at Gateway they do D-F work. The teachers are content in letting them do so. They weigh their grades unfairly. 20% class work 80% test, If your child is not good at test taking, they don't stand a chance at this school. I have also found that the teachers FAIL to teach! My children come home with assignments and have not the first clue how to complete them. I found a charter school for my daughter and moved her over. In a matter of weeks, she is a straight A student! It saddens me that I dislike a school so badly that I can not wait for this academic year to be over so we can move on!
We love Gateway!!! I have three children that have attended this school. My oldest is now at Higely High. My younger two are in their third year at Gateway. My son as an IEP and he gets exception help and understanding with his disabilities. Mr. Hendricsen has been phenomenal, especially with helping me in personal and sensitive situations with my children over the last three years. . Lorriaine, the secretary, does not get enough credit for the job she does. Over all I am extremely happy with Gateway and Higley schools. I believe that parents should be involved more. I am disappointed in that such a large school has such a small PTO. It is the easiest and most fun way to get involved and let the kids know that beyond classes and homework..... that there is a whole world of excitement out there for everyone at Gateway!
Gateway does not have acceptable classroom instruction for kids with learning disabilities. If your child is boarder line, they recommend putting your child in a emotional behavior class. Some teachers do not care to have struggling students in their class.
This is one of the best schools I have been involved with and the community is outstanding. A+++++
Gateway is AWESOME i came to this school in the middle of 6th grade and i got alot of friends and the teachers were really nice! i went to that school up until the middle of 7th grade cause i moved. it is the best school ive been to and my brothers and I and my parents want us to go back. I LOVE GATEWAY! :)
This school is incredible! The teachers make sure each student succeeds. Parents who care about their kids progress will be happy to know Gateway wants success for each student. My kids have been attending for several years - from Kindi on up. We have received so much more from teachers than they were expected to do. This year, my daughter's 4th grade teacher set up personal tutoring for just my daughter after school in her classroom because she was struggling in math. My 2nd grader's teacher spends many after school hours coming up with extra help for those kids in class who aren't getting it. I love this school!!!
My 5th grader has had nothing but problems at the school. His 2 teachers not only would not help him when being bullied. His teachers act exremely unprofessional and when my son was missing work, they failed to tell me until 2 months later. He claims he was turning it in and they said he wasn't. When I asked if he could come in after hours and do the work they said they didn't allow children to come in before or after school. This is insane to me. My son is extremely smart and is barely passing because his teachers are completely unwilling to help. I am beyond frustrated. Plus this school has a cell phone tower on the kindergarten playground-way to look out for their safety HUSD! The middle school teachers have been amazing on the other hand. My 7th grader went from barely passing to b's. He loves learning especially the Math teacher. What a difference a teacher can make. A great one can make you love learning and a poor once can make a child hate school.
Gateway is AWESOME! Our children have been attending for over 4 years, and we have nothing but great things to say about this school! The tteachers are super driven - caring - and academically minded. The administration is fully supportive of parents and staff, and the staff loves their jobs. Lorraine at the front is the most amazing lady at Gateway! I love having my kids come through her door making them feel completely welcome! Bravo Gateway! We love you!
As a mother to middle school aged students, I have to say the Gateway 7th and 8th grade teams are the best around. Between the 7th and 8th grade math teachers, my daughters have moved from meeting to excelling. They care and the teachers all have innovative and greats ways to teach. The front office staff if amazing and the atmosphere is perfect.
Common' Gateway, stop the bullying. It's your job to see for the safety of all the students, not just the favorites.
My son went to this school for 2nd and 3rd grade. Both years the teachers that he had were wonderful role models and very willing to help students achieve their best. Students require parental involvment, and I have found that if I support the teacher from home, they supported my son's education! We had a good experience here at Gateway and my son throughly enjoyed attending while we lived in this area. The teachers are very easy to communicate with, willing to teach and put forth the effort that children are looking for! Great job Gateway!
I have had two children attend this school. One with special needs and one in 6- 8th grade. Every teacher has been so suppotive. If any issues arise the principal and assistant are excellent. The front desk lady is the most amazing lady Ive ever known. The bus drivers are excellent. The tutoring program is excellent. I think my ownly concern would be the PE teacher Mr farmsworth who is not positive towards the children and choses children for sports that do not deseve it because of the childs behaviour but mummy and daddy are rich so he will put them on the team instead. The football and soccer coaches both ladies and male teachers are fantastic and what Ive seeen of the baseball coaches the same. I do have a concern about sun saftey. The children are often out in the sun with no school hat or sunscreen. The school nurse is excellent and so is the librarian.
My 4th grade grand daughter lives with me. She entered school at the start of 3rd grade. From the very first day when we visited; we have been treated with utmost respect & concern. Each item of concern has been met in the most positive way. I see nothing but success for her here. I think it speaks volumes that although school work can be & willing...even anxious to get to school. She says her 4th grade teacher is hard, but has actually been a very positive influence in many ways. I am very grateful that fate and ? brought us here. My only reqret is that so few young parents are involved. And I know there are lots of grands who could and would enjoy volunteering if they just would do it!
Our son has some special challenges and everything has been handled beautifully with sensitivity and professionalism by his teacher (Gwen Newsom) as well as the special education teacher (Carolyn Castro).
My son attends Gateway Pointe Elementary and we've had wonderful experiences with the administration there. Assistant Principal Wolf was especially helpful in resoving some challenges we were having. Her professionalism was exemplary and we miss her presence at our school. I'm confused by some of the negative comments toward Gateway and its staff; we feel that we're fortunate to have our son enrolled at such an outstanding school.
We miss the old principals - Newphew and Wolfe but will take anyone long term. this district should know our schools need consistency!
My son was a Kindergartner last year at this school. We will not be returning to the school next year. Didn't feel he was pushed hard enough academically and principal and his secretary never return calls from parents. Very unimpressed with administration.
This is the second year that my child attended this schools, now in 6th grade. Last years principle, and staff were aweful, and this year seems to be no better. You will be denied the opportunity to observe the classroom, and the opprtunity to sit down with other parents for conference. They seem to make up rules as they go. There is no 'bully policy', and the staff seems to not care about children safety. Forget ever talking to the assistant principle Mrs. Wolfe, she seems to hate her position. This schools has mastered giving you 'false hope',and they never follow up on their promises.
I have 2 children that our new to the school this year. I am disappointed in the school thus far. They aren't able to provide adequate books for all the students so homework can be frustrating without the ability to glance and review the book. I requested and filled out the paper to be provided with the book on a CD and never received it. I inquired with the teacher and she noted that due to technical difficulties they were unable to provide the CD's. She did finally send a book home with my son and that has helped out tremendously. There are some good teachers and some teachers that seem uninterested, but that can happen at any school. I am hoping to see improvment as the year progresses.
