Took my kids out because.they could not hear the teacher. The kids were loud, cussing and throwing spitwads with the teachers in the room. Sorry but this is not the learning enviroment I want my kids in.
3 of my 4 children have been attending HCS since we moved here. They have all been doing well, and their teachers keep me abrest of everything. Since Tom Yarborough became Principal, the school has made some major changes, and the improvements are VERY encouraging. Many young, new, and enthusiastic teachers have been brought in, and they have now added back a wonderful Music program and P.E. program. It is a school that has so much potential, and needs the community support! It's getting better every year!
Yes, there has been a positive change with the staff, and curriculum at our school and new PTA programs have been added to include more parent involvement. Give us a chance to correct past issues. It does take time, and parent involvement can help us to achieve those corrections more quickly. My son has been going here for almost 2 years, and my nephews went her as well.
I have 3 children attending HCS, 2 in elementary and 1 in middle school. After coming from a private school background, my children were 'ahead' of the cirriculum offered last year and did very well. However, my 8th grader coasted and was not challenged, not even barely. Because of the implentation of the new academy, my student now has homework every night and has challenging classes. The teachers are great and are interested in preparing the kids for high school. Tom Yarborough, the principal, is a huge asset to this school. There is no doubt that without him and the new academy, my kids would be attending a different school this year. Adding PE back to the cirriculum was definitely needed and a huge plus.
When reading the posts here, please note their age. Since the last post from June 2006, HCS has had many significant positive changes. We have changed administration (principal and district superintendent) and hired young, enthusiastic teachers. We have also developed a 7th/8th grade academy based on sound research practices. PE has been returned to HCS and we are looking at creative ways to reintroduce music and art. For extracurricular activities, HCS has most of the sports that other schools do, except football. Wrestling, cross country, and softball have been added to the sports available to middle grade students. To Sheryl Boggs who was upset with the former PTA-we have had a 100% turnover of personnel and gladly welcome new members and ideas. The number one indicator of student success is parent involvement. If you have been discouraged by HCS's struggles in the past, please reconsider, in light of our recent positive changes.
this school is centrally locat4ed and very student orientated. teachers care deeply for the children and have thier best interest at heart, School needs more funds so they can have a music and art program.
Most of the teachers are shoddy at best. We had a few good ones, but most of them are leaving or have already left. There is o extracurricular activities. Parent involvement consists of a PTA that is more of a we're in charge and we won't include anyone else. They acted as if I wasn't even there so I haven't been back.
I have two children who attend. I the last 3 years, all but 1 extracurricular activity program have been cut. Last year when the district Superintendant tried to move both the 7th and 8th grades to a new high school (yes 7/8th grade in high school) that is over 16 miles away (they had to move the kids to get state funds to pay for the new over budget high school), it was like pulling teeth to get the other parents to do anything but sit around and complain. The current pricipal has cut almost all fund-raising activities so the kids cannot do the special things that a normal part of school life
I have two children attending this school. Both have attended since kindergarten, and my oldest is going into 5th grade. The quality of teachers varies widely, and there is little to challenge a more advanced student. I am big on communication, and being a partner in the education of my children, and trying to make that happen at this school has been a frustrating experience at best.
My son has gone to HCS for 3 years, this last year was a roller coaster ride. He had a awesome teacher, who was really into helping her kids out. However, the new administration was terrible. There were alot of things swept under the rug, and many valuable staff members and volunteers (including myself) were made to feel if we didn't agree with the current administration's opinion's and handlings we could leave. So this coming year we will not be returning. HCS will have no receptionist, a part-time nurse, and countless well qualified teachers left to find more respect in a new school. Could be a great school, with a new administration.
This school is struggling to come back from horriable school board leadership. Currently programs are being cut and class size is being increased fro about 18 to 27. The teaching staff in the pst has been caring and excellent teachers, however most of the good teachers have left the school in search of better pay and working conditions. The students are wonderful and the small school within a school format is appealing.
Now that the administration staff has retired, the school should be much better. Had a lot of problems with drug usage and gang fights among the middle high schools.
