INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I am very pleased with this school, I have 2 attending. My children are thriving...and I think it is due to me as a parent working with and in constant contact (as needed) with my children's teachers...parents must take ownership in their children's education...we can't hope and wish for our children to thrive we have to be involved on a daily basis not just during crises. Vista rocks!!!

7th grade has been falling apart. Teachers leave and they fill with substitutes, hoping the teacher will return. This provides no stability for the student. Highly disappointed this year. This school has had high teacher turn over and only a few remain from the year they opened. This is my daughter's 7th year at Vista and she has started with a newly hired teacher every year since attending this school except for one year. I have had no problems in years past and only had great things to say about Vista but this year, I can not say the same. The PTA is wonderful at Vista and parent involvment is high.

My daughter loves Vista! We are so happy we decided to send her there. She is now in 1st grade and is doing wonderful! Her Kinder teacher was great and her 1st grade teacher is awesome! My daughter always looks forward to school and is always happy when she comes home from school! Ms. Pashley is the best. Very approachable, and is always open to listening to parents and their concerns. We are planning on enrolling our youngest at Vista next Fall. So happy this school is so close to home! Happy Vista has a gifted program for those students that are excelling. My daughter was recently admitted to the program. Couldn't be happier!

I give this school one star because the teachers are complete bullies! Not only do they yell at the students, they physically tease them! The teachers and parents should be held accountable for the students performance, not the kids! It's unbelievable that Mr. Schut would be allowed to pull poorly written papers and make a laughing matter of the children. Seriously!? He actually told the kids he enjoys teasing people? Ridiculing the children doesn't make them better academically, it lowers their confidence and gives the kids ammunition to do the same. Bullying at this school must be addressed, and I'm not talking about student on student, but teacher on student. Then of course there is the matter of the principal. A child brings bad behavior to her attention and she yells and screams at them for it? Something is seriously wrong with this schools principles. It should not only about be about good test scores, but about well rounded children. But then I guess the they those tax dollars !!!

I've been going to Vista for 2 years now, and I absolutly LOVE it! The envorment at Vista is extremly amazing! Not only do they help you exceed, they make learning fun! And they don't make anything that complicated! They try to figure out your level of learning, and start from there, they make sure they know your learning style, and even though this school is slightly hard, in a few weeks you'll get used to it, and you will see your child's improvement while going to this school. I know for a fact my AIMS score has never been better when I first attended Vista. This really is an amazing school, an A School.

Year seven for us as a Vista family. We are extremely satisfied. Our children look forward to school each day, even Mondays! Again, this school is not for everyone. Each child is different and not all children will perform well in this environment. Vista requires strict dicipline and accountability for both studys and behaviors, BY BOTH STUDENTS AND PARENTS. Attending a traditional school is a priviledge and a choice that requires a huge time commitment, and is a model for our standard schools and educational systems. Some Vista families have multiple children, one child may attend Vista while their sibling attends a different elementary school. Vista is rigorous. Please consider all possibilities to best suit your family. Go Tigers!

My daughter loves this school, it was the best move for her. She is excited about her teacher, friends and her learning environment. I have to ask myself sometimes, I'm I smarter than a 1st grader because the school is doing such a great job. It keeps her challenged and she craves more. So if you child is a natural intellect and loves to be challenged, this would be the school of choice. But I have tried 2 years in a row and no luck with getting my son enrolled. I'll keep trying, maybe next year.

This is our first year at Vista. My two children attended 5 years at another community school. We made the switch because they needed to be challenged. We have been so happy with our decision. The kids love school, they have good friends, they come home full of information that they want to share. They are being enriched. I love the staff and the Principal. We couldn't be happier.

Last year was my first year at Vista del Sur. I want to share that moving our son to this school was the best decision of our life! And this year, Vista is rate the #1 performing Elementary School in the ENTIRE STATE OF ARIZONA!!!!! Seriously -- #1 in the STATE! The staff are wonderful. We did have an instance last year where my son was teased and called "gay". The staff addressed the issue right away and called the parents of the children. What suprised me was that the parents of the children who were responsible for the teasing were also supportive. I can't say enough about Principal Pashley as well. If you have any concerns about curriculum, school operations, or discipline, she returns your call directly!!! The PTO is supportive and wonderful as well!. This school services a diverse community of student families. It is a traditional school (which may not suit some families), and the curriculum is challenging so as a parent you need to be committed to education and homework. The school isn't for everyone, so definately do your research and talk to parents. But we love it and feel it's supportive and challenging environment for our son and family.

As a parent and teacher myself, I can honestly say this is THE BEST school for my daughter. She is starting third grade this year and I am overjoyed to see how ready she is: her foundation is strong; she is confident and proud of herself, getting straight A's every quarter. The leadership and teachers are amazing (Thanks, Ms. Vaughn in second grade, you are THE BEST!!!). I would not even consider any other school in the neighborhood. By the way, Vista just became TOP school in the state!!!! THANK YOU, VISTA STAFF, FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION! WE TRULY APPRECIATE IT!!!

I wanted to take a second a let everyone know how great this school is! Yes, they have had some hard times in the past, but the new administration and teachers have really brought the school back to life. My child has been attending Vista for the past two years and I really appreciate everything they have done in the past year to help my child be successful. I would not send them to any other school. He will be a Vista Tiger until he goes to high school!

I am proud to say that my daughter is a Kindergarten Student at Vista del Sur. Being that my daughter had not attended daycare or Pre-K, I was very worried about her attending Vista and how she would adjust. However, due to the ratings of the other schools nearby, I felt I had no other option. I must admit placing her in Vista is one of the best decisions I have made. She has adjusted very well; is doing great academically and her teacher keeps us parents well informed on what is going on. Many of the staff members have gone out of their way to not only get to know my daughter, but my parents and I, as well. I have no doubt in my mind that they care for my daughter and her success! I must add that the workload can be heavy, therefore it is very crucial for parents to play an active role in the child s education and not solely rely on school staff. With that being said, I highly recommend Vista del Sur Traditional School to any parent within the Laveen School District!

Both of my children attend Vista and have for a few years (in 3rd and 7th grades, now). I have been involved in various aspects of volunteering - children's classrooms, PTO, site council, school events, etc. typically meeting our family volunteer hours before school even starts. My children, while not the most exemplary students 100% of the time, are receiving a quality education that I am very pleased with. My husband and I are both college educated and expect that our children will pursue the same course (but will listen if they have other ideas!) and the challenging course work is preferred over being bored. They both enjoy school but there is a significant amount of homework and parental involvement in that homework. If you are not prepared to work with your children and pay attention to what they are doing - and "working with" does not mean complaining to your child's teacher that it's too much - then this is not the right school for you/your family. Previous administration had some challenges - communication definitely could have been better but I guarantee that a sour attitude upon entry to the office will typically get you one back! It takes a village of nice people!

I am giving Vista a one star rating because of the rude ferocious incompetent Principal. I cannot believe how she spoke to me. Every word dripping with disdain! All I wanted was a little empathy and some cooperation. But now I have been pushed to remove my child. The kindergarten teachers have been forced to run these little ones like soldiers. They are told to weed out the weak quickly and get rid of them. What kind of a way is that to run a school? It doesn't matter who gets hurt in the process. "Waiting For Superman" explains it all. The students are just a number. Staff will receive a paycheck no matter if your child succeds or not!!

Vista del Sur is a great fit for your son. He has attended since kindergarten. Despite a great deal of upheaval last year, the school remains our choice for our older son. As another parent noted, the front office staff seemed to have developed negative attitudes toward all last year, but I have not seen that with the new school year that has just started. I have found ALL my son's teacher's approachable. Regretfully, I have not met the new administrators yet this year, but hope to as we become more involved with the PTO. Our younger son does not attend this school as it is not a good fit for him. Vista is a wonderful school for a child who thrives on being challenged and pushed to do better each year. Testing is emphasized, but I have no problem with that as our children get the "extra" teaching through our family choices and outside clubs and organizations.

I am very disappointed and disgusted in how much this school prides themselves in all these great things and once you are there you realize that it's all talk. The women in the front office are very unprofessional and demeaning to parents. The staff there are not approachable for the most part and the environment is too uptight. I decided this is not a fit school for my child; therefore I have transferred my child to Desert Meadows!

Vista del Sur is an Outstanding and Excellent school. As you'll see again they have maintained the "Excelling" status again this year. The scores from the students are fantastic! Great work by the Administration and Teachers! Glad to see a lot of negative parents leave and make this and even better place. With a new Principal & Assistant Principal, a new PTO board, this place will only get better!

My child loves Vista! She is challenged and motivated to excel and is encouraged to be the best she can be. They are highly focused on academics and that includes test scores. This just sets her up for success when she is older and pursuing her higher education. She is well prepared and has never complained about school. I've read comments about not offering tutoring but my child actually used to help with tutoring other kids to get them caught up with the curriculum. She has had a great experience. Some people might call it "controlling" but I'm happy the administration holds staff accountable.

Vista is a great school. Teachers are held accountable for the traditional school learning values. Current adminstration makes sure of this. It does make some teachers unhappy, but its what we signed up for. Some of the more vocal, pushy parents can be selfish only worrying about their kids instead of the school and district as a whole as witnessed by the firing of the Superintendent. I am afraid the other 5 schools and 80% of the students in Laveen School District will suffer from this atrocity, but at least the 20 parents at Vista who made it happen will be happy until their kids go somewhere else because now the district will go broak and be in ruins.

March 31, 2011
Current administration only makes sure you are conforming to her rules. There is no interest in meeting anyones needs unless it is self serving to her. It is a shame a teacher makes a comment and has no clue as to what is pushed under the rug. I thank goodness for my pushy parents because they make me accountable and a better teacher. They are my boss along with their kids. Don't blame teachers for these atrocities and how silly you are to think the district will go broke because of this. Where did you get your education?

I love this school. And honestly if you talk to most the parents there they love it too. my daughter loves going to school everyday, and learns so much. I love the way they teach and how much the teachers love the kids. Yes, there are some Mom's in the PTO that are a little pushy and now dont' like the school...but really you could have worse problems. If I have ever had an issue I've been able to talk to the teacher and she has been so helpful. You have to realize that you are sending your kid to an accelerated school and be prepared to help them at home....but you should do that anyways. It's awesome and for Laveen I would not choose anything else. I've heard really bad things about eagle and all the other schools. I love Vista!!!

Up until this year, Vista has been the best in Laveen. Recent changes in administration have deteriorated the morale, communication, and overall trust of parents, staff, and students. The principal has become a "yes-man" to the impulsive changes being demanded by the superintendent. This negatively affects the parents, staff, and students on a daily basis. The goal has shifted from concern and success of each individual student to test scores, timelines, and schedules. These changes include the unfair removal of competent staff, and will lead to the resignation of many explemplary educators. The intimidating way that decisions are being enforced, clearly outlines the direction that this school is headed.

my kids (1st & 5th grade) are happy to go to school, they have great teachers this year, which makes whole lot of difference. to all these parents who are complaining: there is only 1 teacher and 30 kids in the class, vista has accelerated program, it is very hard for a teacher to focus on one kid who is failing because he/she doesn't even care about doing homework or are not paying attention. and really? driven by money? like every other school they are driven by what the school district tells them to do

My second grader was doing reasonably okay, when he joined the school for his level. Now, he is on academic probation for the second time in a row, and about to be kicked out of school. There has been no help from the school or the teachers, to improve his performance, or confidence. The homework given to him is all but a boring repetitive routine. I have seen the exact same homework being given everyday for the whole school year; 25 two-digit addition, 25 spelling words, some calendar, clock, and coins problems. I am sure that there is more that he needs to know than just this. The school handbook, and newsletters are just a farce. Our 7th grader wants to wear "skinny pants", big earrings and makeup, which is against their school policies. When questioned, she says that everyone wears what they want to and the school doesn't care, and why she should be the only one following rules. We also caught her taking other clothes and makeup in her backpack secretly to school, and changing there. The school boasts about a lot about education and discipline. It does not come anywhere close to meeting the standards that it promises, or enforcing and incorporating discipline or structure.

This school boasts that it has excellent grades. My 7th grader has always been struggling with Math. When we test her on some basic concepts, I am shocked to see how abysmal her understanding is. She seems to be doing her homework regularly, but all this is scripted just the wrong way by the school. Everything revolves around the school trying to get the kids good grades. They don't seem to care if the students are grasping anything. One example is that for class assignments, and quizzes, the kids work in groups, and a common grade is given of 5 or 6. My daughter makes an A in these class assignments, but she has no clue about anything about it. All it takes for the class to show an A grade for the class is 5 kids. My daughter said that their group leader is good at Math, and he does the assignments. Because of this, our daughter's level in Math has deteriorated astonishingly. She makes an F on the Math test; to rig these grades, the teacher allows them to take the tests back home to correct them. Then her grades are adjusted to a higher grade. It will make me happier see her real grades, so I can work with her and help her, instead of seeing these false, rigged grades.

We were very excited and happy to get our three kids into this school last year, and had great hope that this school will help our kids as they were lagging behind. On the contrary, this school has dragged them further down. We pulled our 4th grader out of the school halfway through the school year, as he was doing horribly bad; worse than he was when we put him in the school initially. Now, we are noticing the same pattern with our other two kids, in 7th grade and 2nd grade. We are pulling our kids out of the school by the end of this year, and enrolling them in Our Lady of Sorrows, Catholic school. This school has taken our kids from bad to worse, and I really regret having enrolled them there in the first place. Vista Del Sur having a 9 rating, is absolutely the most ridiculous thing. I would give it at best a 2.

Vista was a good school when it opened as a traditional school. Then, like so many others said, the excelling part started and it was all about the label given to the school. The kids don't understand half the time what they are doing, they just do it because that's how they are told to do it. It is almost like a military academy. My oldest child was doing okay, my youngest not as well and therefor we were told that the school was not a good match. No help from the school at all. No wonder so many families have pulled their children out. Including me. Kudo's to the pto though, they are really good and a lot of schools can take lessons from them.

My kids were not challenged. My child had all a's in cheatheam (ugh) and when he went to vista he still had straight a's. But that in itself isn't the problem, it's the way the school is ran now. The first two years it went traditional, it seemed that the emphasis was on learning, and the "excelling" came with the good teaching. Now under "new management"the school seems so obsessed with getting the excelling scores that they have become a school that teaches for testing not for learning. On another note, I've seen several comments along the lines of "the school won't work with you", this is so true, whether it's grades or behavior this school does not work with anyone, doesn't have to, all the schools in Laveen stink, so they choose who goes there.....I would not send my children there...

GREAT SCHOOL! Good communication, safe environment; strict, high expectations of the children & parents regardless of the grade level & the children go there to learn. What I DONT like about this school is that they don t let the parents know ahead of time that this is an accelerated school until your child is struggling. I had my child there one year & it was the most stressful year I have ever experienced. I was faced with the dilemma of taking her out of the school & placing her in a new school . Never in my wildest dreams did I think kindergarten was going to be this stressful. I thought it was suppose to be a fun year. The school should have the children tested before accepting them. It would be better for the parent, child & the school. If they did this, they wouldn t put the child through a year of MISERY. I would recommend you discuss with the school what level your child is currently performing prior to enrolling them.

It's true, this is not the school for everyone. My children happen to really need the accelerated curriculum (they work a full year ahead of grade at Vista) and the higher expectations. However, if my child were learning at grade level or even slightly behind, this school would be a very stressful environment. It's not for everyone, but it works if you have kids who need that faster pace and are ready to work ahead.

I was unaware others had this same issue with VIsta. My children were struggling with the next grade work. Instead of offering tutoring or help they said ' Maybe this isn't the school for them, they would do better in a regular school' I now understand how they are a excellerating school, they refer the children falling behind out or retain them to get thier scores up. My children were testing @ thier grade level and the school still wanted to retain them, because thier percentage wasn't high enough. No thanks! They will go where they are accepted and not having to try to fit in, Not a good educational school if your children are hands on.

This school does not offer any additional help to falling students. They discipline the children falling behind versus helping them. Yelling and giving up on these young children is not gonna help them succeed. The teachers here need to learn to teach versus giving up or yelling at these young children. And the cafeteria was in the dirty dining.......Yuck!

High test scores do not a great school make. My daughter attended Vista for two years and was really unhappy there. She kept asking me to home school her. Although she was admitted to the gifted program, there was very little that the teachers could do to meet her at her level. At one point, they had her in an advanced reading group, but that was discontinued, in part, so that the students would only be working on the material that would be covered on the upcoming AIMS test. (priorities!) Some teachers are better than others, but there seems to be a lot of yelling at students, rather than more effective systems of discipline. She is much happier at Eagle College Prep this year, and is being challenged and taught as a whole person. Vista is fine for some families, but if your child doesn't fit the mold, I'd look elsewhere.

Being a parent of a kindergardner, I am proud to say that this school is ideal for my kid. He is learning 1st grade math and is starting to read on his own. His teacher is actively involved with the students and makes sure the parents are aware of any obstacles that come in their way when it comes to learning. I am very surprised at how much he has learned to this point and would definitely recommend this school to anyone looking to excel.

There is little additional help for those falling behind. The teacher's response to my child's low grades was/is: maybe this is not the school for your child...NOT 'here are a few things we can try together to get her caught up'... Kindergardeners were expected to master perfect letter formation or the answer was wrong. Only after repeated and widespread complaint was the grading approach split to show penmanship and correctness as equal. The school provides two clear messages: First, the school is always right, if you don't like it, leave. Second, it is all about what your child can do for the school.

Being a nursing student requires a lot of my time. I was worried that my kindergartner might fall behind since I was struggling to devote much attention to her school work. Vista del Sur school is one of the best traditional schools around. Our school has proven that if you expect excellence from your students, that is what you will see. Teachers, staff and Mr. Matthies care so deeply for each student and their education. Our PTO...ROCKS...we have created a family feel and environment for our school. This school may have better behaved children and demand more out of the students and parents but dont expect that much from them, especially if you are have a student with special needs, they'll make promises they cant keep and then back pedal in the end. Don't get me wrong its a bettter school than all of the ones in the area its just modeled for the PERFECT child.

I love this school! We moved here during the Laveen housing boom and have had my kids at Cheatham (6th gr), Vista (when it was 7 & 8th only) and K/1st grader at Laveen. My older kids hated Vista during this time due to bullying, poor teaching and leadership. Cheathem... grrrrr! Laveen was good for my daughter in Kinder/1st grade, she had great teachers. But I could see that it was not the environment I wanted for her (a lot of chaos and zero parent involvement). Vista has been great for her. The staff & parent involvement is awesome & so is the curriculem. It's a lot of work but is also challenging her for her future. Way to go Vista for setting the standard for the State of AZ to follow. All schools should be this good. My older kids are @ Fairfax HS now & so far so good!

Vista Del Sur Traditional school has been the perfect choice for our family. My children previously attended Laveen Elementary and the two schools seem like night and day in comparison. I frequently had to ask Laveen Elementary for work that challenged my child. At Vista, they are constantly being challenged, learning at a much greater rate, and they love going to school. The staff is amazing and the principal is genuinely concerned about the children. Parental involvement is enormous. At Laveen Elementary, I rarely saw another parent in the classroom. At Vista, I have to schedule my class visits ahead of time so as not to overlap with another parent helping. I would highly recommend this school for a parent who wants to play an active role in their child's education.

Vista Del Sur Traditional School was the best choice I could have made for my son in the Laveen district. The administrators and staff are striving for excellence in challenging the children in a positive and effective way, and keeping high standards and an advanced, structured ciriculum. We need more schools like Vista to raise the level of education in the Arizona, to compete nationally in testing, and to feel good as parents that we're giving our children the best possible start in life.

Vista del Sur has made a complete turn around! I am amazed at the quality of staff, from teachers to administrators to support staff, they really have it together! Their methods of teaching are exceptional and so far my children are excelling. I know that my children are being challenged and it makes me feel that as a parent, I've really made the right choice by enrolling my children.

Vista del Sur Traditional is on the move to being one of the best schools in the state. The leadership is phoenminal, the teachers are of the highest quality and the parental involvment is unbelievable! I moved my daughter from another Laveen school where there was bullying, severe discipline issues and parents didn't seem to care about their kids or their education. As a new concept in Laveen, this traditional school is turning around the learning environment and raising the bar. I can already tell a difference in my daughter's interest in school and can see the learning that occurs. It is clear that the administrators, staff, students and parents are excited to be a part of this school and are willing to work hard to make it a great place for our kids.

So far this school has met my expetations. I changed from Cheatham becasue of lack of challeging my two girls. Cheatham had put a fits all for teaching. Which was not working. My girls are bright and need the addtional push to succeed ; Vista's staff are great! My girls enjoy school now... they do complain about the amount of Homework.. but at least they have it!
