We have had kids at Zaharis for 11 years now. What an amazing school! All the teachers and staff are excellent and the culture is so warm and inviting. We're so thankful we have had the opportunity to be a part of this school.

We moved into the area from out of state, and with natural trepidation explored our options for our soon-to-be-newly minted Kindergartner, our son who is long on "bright & spirited," not so much on "focused attention." The school currently scores an 8 as compared with some neighboring schools scoring a 10; I suppose one has to wonder what that actually translates to for an individual child. All we can say is we can't be more thankful we ended up at Zaharis. Ms Pena, our son's kindergarten teacher, has been a perfect match, the parental involvement and school spirit is strong, and the principal Mr. Oliver makes a special note of of describing himself as "prince-a-pal," a fun twist but appropriate -- he allows his teachers the freedom to stack their walls with books cover side out (clever rain-gutter shelving), and inspires everyone in the age-old tradition of learning through reading. We feel lucky to have landed here.

My daughter attends Zaharis and it has been the BEST experience we could have asked for in a school and teacher. Ms. Kuhlman is FABULOUS and we feel very blessed to go to such an amazing school! I have never heard of such an engaged, caring, active, public school... but it does exist at Zaharis!

I am a parent of 2 Zaharis students, this school is all about your status.if u make 1 comment about there rules (which they make up as they go) they will shun u From that day foward, the whole staff is a bunch of gossiping men and women. The principal has n knowledge of discipline to the children that need it.If your child has a problem in any subject there first stepped is to assume your child is special needs instead of the teachers working with your child...

I know and have worked with the Principal Mr. Oliver in the past at another school. He is kind and has a great relationship with all of his staff, parents and children. I love that he has books in his office. I love the bed time stories..If I were to move back to Mesa I would definately have my children attend Zaharis.

There is no better school out there! You seriously won't find any better! Everyone works together to create an environment unparallelled to anything you've every seen! You have to go see it to believe it!

Zaharis is an outstanding school that teaches kids to think rather than just memorize. The principal is truly a role model that the kids look up to and love. He is creative, involved, and thinks outside the box, and therefore attracts that kind of teacher. The teachers are there because they love to teach kids and challenge them daily to be better learners, discovers, and people. Academic excellence these days is only measured by test scores, but they cannot measure the intangible skills of real life problem solving, critical thinking and so many other qualities that parents want their kids to learn and embrace. I am blessed that my kids have all attended Zaharis since it opened when my oldest started kindergarten. They have gotten the very best educational experience I could ask for.

Great school! Really reaches outside the box to teach kids in different ways from the traditional school formats. No desks, make kids comfortable and they are more open to learn.

Zaharis is like a private school disguised as a public elementary. The principal and teachers are so involved in creating a comfortable learning environment. Even if you visit the school unannounced you will see a ton of kids reading or enjoying projects. I also have special needs children and they receive the utmost support at Zaharis. Truly a great school!

I have been so impressed with Zaharis. What a welcoming environment for children and their families! At this school, kids learn by doing. They are becoming readers, writers, mathemeticians, and scientists. Students and teachers learn alongside one another, and it's evident that they are all actively engaged and having fun! I couldn't imagine a better school to help my children to learn and grow.

Zaharis is a wonderful place for children. Instead of doing drills and worksheets all day, my children read real books, and get real-life learning experiences. As a result, they love learning, love reading, and love school. The teachers are wonderful. You can tell they put extra time into their teaching and care a lot about the kids. Lots of parents get involved, and there's a real feeling of joy at the school. What a wonderful place to be!

My child has attended this school for 4 years. I have to do an extra hour of homework with him each night just to get him to the level he is supposed to be at. My child is a bright and inquisitive student that seems to get lost in the shuffle. The test scores are low because there is no standardized curriculum. I will have my son attend a different school next year.

My kids have attended Zaharis for 3 years and have enjoyed phenomenal teachers each year. They have never said they do not want to go to school. The building itself is beautiful, and the students' work is always displayed around the classrooms as well as in the hallways. Zaharis instills a love of learning rather than just preparing for standardized tests. My kids' math and reading skills are significantly higher than grade level and are also better compared to cousins who go to quality schools in other states. In addition, Zaharis teaches how to research and learn rather than just memorizing facts. The only downside of Zaharis are the class sizes which have crept up recently.

I'm a student teacher that goes to school in Rexburg, ID. I visited Zaharis back in Aug. 2007 and noticed that students were learning for life and not just for a test. I requested to do my student teaching here and I have to say I love it! I'm learning how to teach students so they can see the importance of what they are learning for life. I hope that I'll be able to find a school just like this one for my children.

I have children at this school, and let me just say that Zaharis is not the same way it use to be. Mr. Oliver is kind but he is not very fair when real discipline needs to be given. Also my kids are doing horrible at this school, and I feel that the teachers do not really take the time to make sure no child is left behind, they just say they need Special Ed and that gets them off their back! I feel this school needs to pick up the slack it's slacking. I have decided my children will not be attending this school next year.

Zaharis is such a great school! I went to zaharis for 2 years and I loved the school. The principal is so cool and is involved and talks and hangs out with the students! the principal even calls himself principal! He is so cool to get to know!I loved going to that school it was way better and cleaner then my old elementary school! The aids are really nice and hang out and get to know the kids and are friends to the students! The teachers listen and get to know the kids instead of being really mean! They are all really nice!!!

My kids have gone to Zaharis for three years and we have been very impressed. We love the principal. He is very friendly and involved. It is a clean, organized school with lots of parental involvement and opportunities to volunteer. I've been very impressed with all of the teachers my kids have had. I love how you can request teachers. I do agree that the school is a bit overcrowded.

Each class has a student teacher so that reduces the teacher to student ratio! Emphasis on learning to love books and reading! Caring & great learning environment! My home school is top rated in the area but I'm chosing to take my kids to a school where they will be really valued instead of the teacher s transfering their knolweged to my child

i moved my kids from the school we are zoned for because I had heard so many great things about Zaharis. I was not disappointed. This will be my kids second year there, and they love their school. There are kids that dont behave, but you have that at every school. I like that Mr. Oliver is directly involved with the kids at all levels, he really cares about them. My kids get homework everyday in all subjects based on their grade level. Because of our experience with Zaharis, I am now getting my teaching certification in hopes of one day teaching at Zaharis. Thanks.

Zaharis is a great environment where real learning is valued. They teach the whole child instead of filling each day with worksheets and drills. I have found every staff member there to be caring and helpful. Literacy is a focus and rightfully so! After all, reading is the center of all learning! Incidentally, Zaharis is a public school, so it has no control over class size. The wonderful teachers there care about children and do well with their classes, even when their numbers might be high.

I had heard such wonderful things about Zaharis and needless to say I have been greatly disappointed. Zaharis has an unbelievable amount of undisciplined, rude, out of control children who show no respect for authority. I feel sorry for the teachers that have to deal with up to 30 children in one class. There seems to be no consistency in curriculum within a specific grade level. The two years my child has been attending Zaharis he has been given homework approximately 20 times. I send my child to tutoring because I feel that he is not being taught the subjects that he should.

I'm also a parent of a student at Zaharis and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Your child may be one of the lucky ones that has a good teacher. My child has received little if any math instruction. I agree that their method of reading instruction is the best. But what you do not seem to realize is that not all classes for a particular grade level are taught the same therefore, not all homework for a specific grade level is the same. It depends on the teacher your child is given. Overall test scores for the school have dropped significantly. Class sizes have increased drastically.

Incredible leadership by the principal, who recognizes that literature is one of the most important teaching tools. The students love him, because he is involved, genuinely cares about them, and is a positive force in the school. Focus is on learning to love to read as a foundation for lifelong literacy and thirst for knowledge, but I disagree with reviewers who said that math and science are not emphasized. Math homework is daily, as is reading and spelling. Homework is challenging, and teacher followup - with rewards and consequences - is outstanding.

It is a good school. They base everything on reading and comprehension. We love how close it is to our home. The teachers who have taught there for awhile are good, but the new teachers are still trying to catch the school's vision. Parents do not seem to be as involved, and there are a lot of fundraisers. It is still a new school, so there are not as many extracurricular activities or summer activities.

The teachers at this school are amazing. They are always willing to challenge a student or give extra support to those who need it. Parents are welcome at any time, and can simply sit on the couches in the hall of they so choose. The after school programs are great as well. They have cheer, football, basketball, and volleyball, all provided by Mesa Parks and Recreation.

I think this principal tries too hard to create a showpiece. Why are Mesa resources all being used to make this school so 'perfect' when other schools are short necessary resources? Would this be because the houses are worth more in this neighborhood, and therefore we expect more from these kids?

I am so impressed with this school. The teachers really care about the kids and are excited to be there. It is a good feeling to know that when I drop my kids off at school, they will be well taken care of and their little minds will be well taught. Everything I have to say about this school is completely possitive. They go out of their way to go above and beyond the normal 'public school'.

My daughters have absolutely 'thrived' at Zaharis. The principal, Mike Oliver, and his staff are so dedicated to the welfare of out children and offer a 'unique' teaching enviornment. While in the process of moving to a new home, a requirement is that I stay within the Zaharis school zone. My children (6 and 12) have thrived. I can not say enough about the level of respect I have for this school and the 'love' they have for each and every child. Parents, if you are seeking a school where your children will be in a school that is a step above the rest, then Zaharis and it's approach to teaching our precious children is a school/neighborhood you seriously should consider. I am proud to be part of the Zaharis 'family'.

I am a parent of a 5th grade student who is in his 2nd year at Zaharis. Our school is absolutely amazing! We were at a school we loved before and never dreamed that we would ever be more satisfied. Once inside the doors at Zaharis, we knew we'd found our place. Here we are, a school year and a half later and still excited! It is evident, with very rare exception, that one of the staff beliefs of 'We believe that it is a privledge to be surrounded by children' is shared, and stated from the heart, by all. From the front office, to the living room areas to the reading corners of every classroom, Zaharis is truly a child's heaven on Earth, created with compassion and excitement!

I am a student at ASU who toured Zaharis School in search of a possible student-teaching assignment. I cannot tell you how absolutely amazing this school, its students, and staff are! I have always had a vision in my mind of what the 'perfect school environment' in an ideal world would look like. This school has surpassed every one of my wildest dreams. The principal, Mike Oliver, took his passion for early childhood education, his dreams for what an ideal school would look like, and built it from the ground up...literally! I am so very impressed with this school.
