Franklin West Elementary uses an excellent Spalding reading system; however, after 4 years I have removed my student due to the intolerable campus environment which is EXCLUSIVE, HOSTILE, PUNITIVE and ABUSIVE.
My son has been attending FW for 2 years now. I was a little concerned with the Spalding method of learning to read at first, but still chose this school because they still have the option of half-a-day kinder, which I wanted. He is excelling in all areas. No matter where in Mesa we end up, my kids will be attending this school.
I love to see the smiles on the teacher's & students faces as they begin the day. The teachers have clear expectation for their students behavior and the students respond well to that. I love that citizenship and a love for our country's foundng fathers is taught. The core american values that made this nation great is being installed in the next generation who will defend our liberty as a free nation. Thank you Franklin West for this great service.
It amazes me what my children can do with the help of caring teachers who encourage and push them towards excellence. Thank you to all the teachers and staff at Franklin West.
I love everything about Franklin West. They have great teachers who truly care about each child. Their curriculum is superb and I love that they teach the Spalding method. Parents are very involved and the children are respectful kids who love learning. Their expectations are high and the kids always rise to meet them.
Great professional teachers, supportive parents, strong curriculum,Spalding Language Arts Program, high and consistent expectations, years of intense work spent on building community and traditions!
Started my oldest child at the neighborhood school. He spent the whole year learning the letters of the alphabet which he knew before he started. They didn't start him reading until 1st grade. Moved him to Franklin for 2nd grade and though he was a top student at his previous school he had to attend tutoring to catch up. My other three children I started here at Franklin and they began reading within the first few weeks of school. They have a very high standard of excellence and I feel that they are getting a better education than at our neighborhood school. They have learned good study habits and I don't have to fight them to do homework. The teacher/parent communication is great and it feels like family.
The PTO is very organized and they do wonderful things. The parents are very involved, and that makes the kids do better in school and have a better experience.
My daughter has learned so much, and loves her school. The curriculum is wonderful, teachers care about their students, and parents are very involved. She has excellent teachers, and many caring aides. Mrs. Kelly is a great principal, and she knows the names of every child at her school.
I have six children, and so far four of them have attended or are attending Franklin West Elementary School. My two oldest children started at a different MPS Elementary, and were bored with what was being taught. We put them in Franklin and after a brief transition of needing to catch up, they were loving the educational challenge that Franklin Schools provide. My 3rd and 4th children started at Franklin and it has been an excellent school for them as well. I currently have an 8th Grader, a 6th Grader, a 3rd Grader, a Kindergartner, a child starting Kindergarten next year and another one who will start in a few more years. I am really glad that this school is there for my children's educational success.
Before my daughter started at Franklin West she spent a year in a Montessori school. The Montessori system just didn't work for her and she got very behind in Math. When she started at Franklin she was not used to all the homework they have daily(except on Fridays). It was a struggle at first but now she excels in Math. The study habits they teach are wonderful. I never have to tell her to get her homework done. She gets it done on her own. I only wish I had had the same study habits in school as she does. Also there were never any discipline issues in class. Other schools my daughter attended always seemed to have discipline problems. Franklin West really seems to care about challenging kids and about their well-being. I highly recommend this school!!!!!
Very structured. Love the after school sports program. I have coached in the past. Lots of parental support. Advanced academics. Focussed on learning. Wonderful programs like poetry contests and Spring Sing. In my graduating class 18 out of the top 20 were Franklin graduates. Franklin teaches study skills that most students don't pick up until high school or college on their own. We love Franklin West!
I thought that this schools was the best in the area at the beginning of the year. I was deeply disappointed. They may be great at the academic side but the school does not educate the whole child. Not every child learns the same way and Franklin will only work for the child that learns by reading and writing. My child is a very hands on,creative child, learning was difficult because they did not recognized his needs. They sent him to the office because he was slow to do his work. They announced to the class that he was going and why. The other children begun to tease him. This was all in Kindergarten. They did not build his self esteem the tore it down. I am pulling him out,he will not go back to a classroom where the teacher considers my Son stupid and treats him that way.
I love Franklin West! Our family has been attending for the past 8 years. My children are challenged with the level of academic work and with the higher grading scale. I appreciate the Principle's concern and love she has for the children. We have had another enjoyable year at Franklin. We look forward to many more!!
I was surprised at some of the reviews I've read. Some teachers are a little more stern than others but I have felt that they disciple in a kind but meaningful manner. For parents concerned about the students not being able to run on the playground, come and check it out yourself. The children can run in designated areas. The aides will not let them run on or around the playground equipment for safety reasons, but there are several things for them to do. Both of my children attend Franklin and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to send them to a school with high academic standards and dress codes. I really enjoy the small-town feel at Franklin. The teachers and principal are wonderful! Franklin was an easy choice!
My daughter has attended Franklin West since Kindergarten; she is now in 3rd grade. The curriculum and staff are great.
Franklin West is a great school. The teachers are top notch and they really support music and art. There is a great feeling of community at this school. The pricipal really cares about the students and is committed to make it a safe place for children to learn. She has an open door policy and is always willing to listen to concerns.
Franklin West is a wonderful school where all staff members truly love, care about, and respect every student. The teachers and principal devote enormous amounts of time and energy to ensuring the success of every student. The principal, Mrs. Schaffer, has worked extremely hard in the past four years to turn the academic program and the morale at the school around a complete 180 degrees. She had a difficult job cleaning up after a principal who did not implement the Franklin curriculum in the slightest bit, and who allowed parents and unruly students to walk all over him. As a result of the high expectations that Mrs. Schaffer has brought back, the students have a much safer and consistent environment in which to learn. She has worked with the parents, teachers, & staff to bring Franklin West back to excelling school status and back to the original Franklin program!
My children have been in the Franklin program since 1998. They have received a wonderful education. The teachers are superb, the curriculum challenging. The band program is great, but the orchestra curriculum moves at such a slow pace all of my children have quit after 1 year. The only negative thing about the school is the principle. She does not listen to the parent council or the parents and is so afraid of getting sued that the children can hardly have fun. With that said, if you're looking for top-notch educational learning, with lots of structure, Franklin is the place for your children.
The new principal of this school seems too strict with the children. It appears she's forgotten that children need to be children sometimes. They can't run and play during recess time to limit 'liability' to the school in case of injury of the students during playtime. Children are not little adults. My step-daughters are very frustrated that recess time primarily means they get to stand around outside. There is very little they are allowed to do anymore. Education at Franklin is wonderful. (But that was the case there prior to the current principal also.) The girls really do well there regardless of their class size.
