I just had to write a review because my experience has been so different to the last two reviewers. In regards to traffic and pick-up/drop-off, this is the best school we have been to (we've been to three). I absolutely love the campus with the trees, the shade, and the mountain view. The buildings are a bit old, and I do think that the bathrooms really need updating, but the campus is a really peaceful and beautiful place to be. In regards to the education, it seems a bit hit and miss. In contrast to the previous review, my child who struggles with attention, learning, and anxiety is thriving at this school, while my very bright, well-adjusted child is floundering. My kids LOVE going to school, and the school does all kinds of fun activities and events. I have never met a parent that I would describe as a snob in any way.
It's interesting that there are really good and really bad reviews. My impression is that - if you have a child that's not an academic superstar, you're going to really struggle here. MA tends to spend most of their time with kids that are intellectually brilliant and way above-average. And if you have problems, or are not that child - then you will basically be ignored. My kids HATED school. Didn't want to go, couldn't do their homework - didn't understand their homework. I feel like MA decided to "keep up with the Jones" by having students do ridiculously challenging exercises. Things like asking a 4th grader to write a report on the evolution on the human jaw. Like, homework that you might expect a high school or college student to be working on. So, it can be frustrating having to spend hours and hours helping your child with homework, that they don't even understand, or have a basic concept of how to tackle. School should be fun, and kids should be learning stuff that's appropriately challenging for them, and interesting. Not just hard for hard's sake. MA needs to take a serious look at the kinds of things they're having kids do and figure out what is appropriate.
My child attended through 8th grade and is now a successful high school student. Students who go through this program become the teens you WANT to spend time with. BUT, if you expect a school to raise your child FOR you, you're going to be disappointed. If you are an involved parent willing to read with your child regularly and practice spelling words and math tables (you know-- be an actual parent), and you are eager to be a partner in your child's education, then this is the school for you. What you trade by not having the newest buildings or the latest in technology, you more than gain in teachers who actually know your child, opportunities for individualized attention, and confident, independent, thoughtful young people who take responsibility for their own lives. Montessori requires kids be intellectually curious and self motivated. It requires parents support and back teachers when students inevitably test limits. If you believe your child can do no wrong, if he spends more time in front of a screen than playing or reading, or if you put more effort into excuses for why your child is struggling than they put into their schoolwork- than NO!! MA is not going to be a good fit.
Arizona Montessori Academy is not a great school. My child stalled once she started 1st grade there. The rooms smell like mold I would not be surprised if there was lead paint on the walls The traffic is terrible Most of the parents are snobs The administration seems to be more interested in monte carlo night then teaching. I would suggest going somewhere else
This school is constantly evolving! The communication was great...then they introduced a new monthly newsletter and weekly classroom update and more! They keep getting better and better. Love this school!
I love how this school teaches students how to behave by being positive and noticing what the children do RIGHT! I've seen some students that worried me at first, but wow! They've really turned around quickly. It makes for great community.
My two girls have been going to Montessori Academy for years and I found that they have grown tremendously through education and practical activities. I have also seen great improvement on their manners and respect. The Principal and teachers are amazing and Cant imagine taking my kids anywhere else
All three of my children attended this school and I can not say enough about it !! All of my children prospered but I would have to say that they worked magic with my son!! He was three when he started attending and has special needs. They were patient, nurturing, and truly cared about his education. He went through every program level and recently graduated from eighth grade. When assessing for high school classes he tested out of freshman courses and into advanced ones!! He is very well liked socially, plays sports, maintains a part time job, volunteers and is an active leader in the community. I give full credit to this school!! They have presented to him opportunities that he would have never received in traditional schooling. (Yearly trips, Heroic Journey, Volunteering in the community, Intern programs, Camping trips). I can not rave enough about the caring faculty and parent community at this school!! Keep up the good work Montessori Academy you are creating the type of people I want to see in my future!!!
Could not leave this awful school fast enough! My kids hugged me with gratitude when I put them in their new schools. I liked the idea of Montessori. However this school is anything but a tranquil learning environment for kids to advance at their own pace. Chaos, mean spiritedness, horrific academics, bad facilities, constant lies from the administration and no communication to parents is what we found here.
Montessori Academy has established itself over its 10 year history as an extraordinary school that produces excellent students upon graduation from 8th grade. There is considerable anecdotal evidence - one of Montessori Academy students recently graduated valedictorian at Bioscience HS. I think many parents that have been naysayers about this school do not fully understand the Montessori Program. As well, they do not understand that like any other public school Montessori Academy must be audited and tested by the Arizona Department of Education. The school is rated a very high B based on last years AIMS scores. I would suggest to all parents - if you have issues with your school please communicate them and let the Administration try to fix the problem. Montessori Academy will do their best to try and resolve any issue presented to them.
We have now had a child go from kindergarten to fifth and a second child from kindergarten and first. We absolutely love Montessori Academy. The teachers have been superb, the offerings are incredible and the gifted services are integrated into the classroom. Our experience with theprincipal has been absolutely amazing. We find the school to be responsive, interested in our children, dedicated to learning, feel the teachers are very hard working and feel each teacher is spectacular. The teachers become even more impressive when you volunteer in the class. We did not have great schools where we used to live and had to move for education. We have been incredibly satisfied and would recommend the school to anyone. From our perspective this is the perfect blend of traditional, progressive, flexible and academically challenging programs out there. Submitted by a parent
The fact that my child went to another school before Montessori Academy and came in low upset me. When the teachers at Montessori Academy began working with him, I realized how much this school actually cares about true learning. He's doing so well now and yes, AIMS scroes and their standardized assessments prove it too! Thank you so much!
Hello, I'll do my best to tell you a little about Montessori Academy from a students perspective. I attended a few different schools (private immersion, a private Christian school, and a 5 star public school) so I have a pretty good grasp on my schooling and how I am learning/growing. What I'll say is that MAAZ nourishes the overall development of a student (core education, ancillary education, and character building). The educators and staff know me and care about me To the point when I headed home I felt like a better person than when I arrived that morning. ;-) Oh, and the campus is gated, safe and beautiful. Now it's not expensive, and they work with you and have a good flexible financial assistance program. So if you can find a way to attend you will not be disappointed. Honestly, I just really love this place. Submitted by a Dean's List College Enrolled Former Student
My daughter use too be bullied at this school. You would think that the bullying came just from the student - yes, also by the teachers. She didn t even want to go to school anymore. I seconded - that the school is dirty. My child would go to school clean and come back looking as if she worked in a mine. They would have my child out in 105 degree temps - for P.E.. The rating of this school is not true. The school shouldn t get a one star rating. You have been pre-warned. They are a charter school - but they charge tuition - can't figure that one out.
Our child attended MA for 3.5 years -- all of it in preschool. I think most of what is said here is accurate: The level of learning can be impressive, and the Montessori Method is wonderful. However, this school seems to be constantly low on funds, to the extent that I feel our $37,000 spent on preschool education was largely diverted to the charter side. They were constantly asking for donations for preschool basics, like paint. The school is often disorganized and messy. I know they are trying, but I just don't think there's enough of a support system for the teachers, and the students are the ones who suffer. I wasn't confident enough in this school to continue into elementary school there.
If there is an available space for your child to attend this wonderful school, race over there right now and register! This is a very unique school which continues to celebrate the curiosity and exuberance which naturally occurs in children. More than just a Montessori charter school, the Montessori spirit and philosophy thrive in this wonderful community. The classrooms are more than simply traditional Montessori. All classrooms have an assistant and technology. This is a huge benefit which lowers the student to teacher ratio in favor of the students. The teachers are dedicated to helping children reach academic and social goals. The administration is responsive to parent and student needs and will often think outside the box to challenge solve. I truly love this school.
Montessori Academy is such a wonderful school. I have 2 children currently enrolled and it is such a nurturing, educational and fun environment. Montessori allows the child to work at their own pace and my girls have really thrived in this environment. There is great parent involvement and since the school is small we are all like one big extended family. I highly recommend this school for preschool/kindergarten education.
Our child was attending a nearby public school who made her feel like something was wrong with her when actually she is gifted and was bored and did not fit their mold to sit still and be quite after you have done your work while the others catch up. MA recognizes that children are children and they all learn differently and they appreciate the child for who they are. They provide an individualized plan for each child so they can succeed. I am so happy we found MA and look forward to many years.
TERRIBLE. The camous is filthy. the teacher turnover is high and it is chaos. The students (and teachers) are unkind and generally not good roles models. In short, a waste of time. It is all a sales pitch- not at all academic but simply a way for the charter holders to make money. Don't waste your time.
The principle had a very good sales pitch/presentation of the school which is what intially sparked my interest in having my daughter attend this school. After the first semester my daughter had to go back to Kindegarten at the new school she now attends. Not happy at all that we wasted the first part of the school year at Montessori Academy. This school seems more like a daycare than a school.
