INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Why send your child to a school that if you child forgets his or her id they will not serve lunch to your child. Next semester i am pulling my child out of this school .

Honestly, this school is just like any other in the Phoenix area. About the same percentile on the AIMS test (~%). Vista Verde Middle School has been improving over the past several years. Standardized test scores has gone up, as well as general behavior of other students.

We just moved to Phoenix and we made the decision to move to this school district. Best decision we ever made. This is a great school. The staff and teachers are excellent. If you want a school that genuinely cares about your child this is the school for you. PV school district rocks!!!!

I am currently a 7th grade IB/MYP student at Vista Verde and to be honest this is an amazing school! I love the teachers here and everyone is so friendly. I mean every school has the bad students that give this school a bad rep but overall it's great! The IB program has really taught me leadership. - Elizabetha D.

If your child is being harassed on the school bus forget about the Principal taking any action. The Vice Principal however will, but I believe the Principal should keep get involved as well. When your child is coming home crying everyday after school because of these bullies , then something drastic needs to be done asap...Liz 9/20/2012

My son has been going through something similar. When my son finally fought back, I got a call from the principal and she said that she didn't care what the boy had done to him in the past. Also there is a boy in his class that has called my son stupid, has pushed him on a few occassions and held him down and threatened him. My son did not want to tell his teacher because he said that she would just side with the other kid. So I told her. She talked to them both and said that they discussed how my son could have a better attitude. I had to walk away from her because I was so angry and dissappointed. I have lost all respect for this teacher and principal. I really don't know what to do. If you go to the board, do the teachers just make it harder on your kids? I am also worried what this is doing to my son. He is a good kid!

currently, im in eighth grade, i have been in this school(and AVID) for two years. saying 'the students are mean' or 'the teachers are bad' is waay too general. yes, some teachers *cough*need more practice....and of course! theres bad kids/people wherever you go! you cant blame that on the school. and i dont believe that AVID and MYP students get more attention, its that they PAY MORE ATTENTION TO SCHOOL themselves! there are things i really hate when im at school, but i wouldnt exactly blame that 'on the school', people just use that as an excuse.

I am currently an 8th grader in MYP at Vista Verde. I love this program and Vista Verde. All of the staff at Vista Verde is fantastic. I have never been so happy to be a part of a greater picture. MYP has encouraged me to look at things from a different perspective. It has taught me how to be a better person. While at Vista Verde I have tried things that I normally wouldn't consider. I've tried numerous sports and after school clubs. At first these things didn't interet me much, but I have made friends that I know will last a life time. Another great thing about MYP is the trip to Wahington, DC. This trip gives students the opprutunity to meet people from different places around the US. We were really able to connect with them and see their perspective on different topics. Vista Verde's teachers are also a key part to my success. They are all willing to help and truly want the best for us. Vista Verde has shown me that I can do anything. I wouldn't want to be at any other middle school because Vista Verde is perfect.

I hate this school!!! i am a student at Vista Verde and honestly wish i wasn't.I have asked to be transfered many times but it has not worked . The students are mean and pick on anyone who has an oppinion different than thare own.the teachers are only pay atenion to the kids who are misbehaving in class ,not the ones who actually want to learn.Children are are constenly cursing , texting, chewing gum,and talking when the teachers talking, and get away with it becuse the teachers are too bisy trying to handle one or more children who are making a secne and rilling the other kids up. Besides the disiplin, the edgucation also needs work. The school has a few good programs that rase the test scores, but if your not in them you are constenly taught, and treated, like a third grader.Parents,if your reading this do NOT send your child to this school.I have been hear for almost 2years now and have hated every second of it . ~annonomous Vista Verde student

Our daughter has attended Vista Verde the last two years while in the IB Program. She has had nothing but great experiences there! The IB teachers are knowledgeable, informed, caring, and really respect the different learning styles of each student. Beyond that, the principal and vice-principal are truly active in the daily activities of all the students in and outside the classroom. We highly recommend Vista Verde and the IB Program there!

I am a current 8th grade student of VVMS in the IB/MYP program. Vista Verde is a low income school and isn't in the best of neighborhoods, but the IB program has changed my perspective on my view on almost everything. I used to just concentrate on the top layer perspective but now I look at all sides in much more depth. I've had a great 2yrs there. There have been fights but the Vice principal, the police officer on campus, and the duty aides got a handle on the situations right a away. This is bound to happen at the best of schools. The main point is that the teachers know what they're doing, and they care about each and every student even if it doesn't seem like it from the outside. All the teachers want all of their students to do a great job in their class. In IB we are taught to connect all of our subjects together and I think that all of the teachers do that. The teachers form their curriculum around all of their students' learning abilities. Over all Vista Verde is a great school to go to if you are going in to IB or even just as a regular student. You will fit in any where at VVMS!

I am a 7th grade student attending vvms currently and i reccomend sending your child to this school. The teachers are very attentive and involved with thier students. The principal and VP are also very involved and dont let bullying go unhandled. VVMS is also the only A+ middle school in the district as far as I have looked.

Vista Verde is an okay school. If you are looking to try the IB program, it's a good way to 'test' it before you go onto high school (if you want to do IB in high school). The reason I only rated this 3 stars was because there are some drug problems throughout the year, as well as many fights. These occur before, during, and afterschool, and also on school buses. If you plan on doing IB, they keep IB and 'regular' kids seperate, which can be a good or bad thing, depending on your opinion. Some teachers are great, but others only assign busy work and don't pay attention to students if they have confusion or might be falling a bit behind. The PE and sports programs are way better than other schools. Arts programs are also offered. Overall, VVMS is only 'ok'.

Im currently a 7th grader at V.V.If any parents are trying to decide if they should send their child here....well I recommmend not to. Im in the I.B. program and the program teaches students to think more world-widely. My achievement in elementary school (quail run) were all A's and I participated in reading and math honers. Also I was in band and still am.What I mean by not going to this school is that the whole point to even go to vista is to get in the I.B. program. 1 out of 10 students actually make it in...... so chances are your child will not make it in.And im sure other parents have told you that the band gets to go to disneyland.....well now the 2nd time in a row, we've had to cancel the trip for budget situations. this school is the #1 school for the most students in a class.gotomountaintrail!!

Our son just graduated from Vista Verde. We have been very pleased with the teacher s involvement and attentiveness to any of our concerns. The teachers are energetic, positive and knowledgeable. The principle and VP are very involved and aware of all aspects of the school. Safety was never a concern for us. The PE and after school sports programs and their coaches have been a very influential experience for our son.. Thank you Vista Verde!!

I am a happy student in the IB program for 7th grade. This is an excellent school with high grade teachers and staff. There is no 'busy work' as some schools claim to have. The principal, Mrs.Jacobs, gets involved with the students and parents, and the school is a very enjoyable environment with school spirit, pride, and respect.

Pulled my child out of Private School to attend VVMS IB Program. IB teachers are wonderful, Mrs. Jacobs is very attentive to students and constantly striving to get parents involved. As with any public school there have been references to gang related incidents, the school staff handled immediately & appropriately, but issues at any school also fall back to the parents. VVMS is wonderful school, but parents need to be more involved!

This is a great school. My son's AIMS scores went way up and he really enjoys school. I have a 7th and 8th grader at this school, and these are the best teachers I have ever seen. I am grateful to the principal and entire staff for their dedication and hard work. I have a son in the AVID program and we really love the program. My oldest son has grown in his confidence due to the encouragement he continually receives from the teachers . For the first time, he really believes that he can be succeed in school. This school is VERY safe. All of the kids and parents we know love this school!

As an IB student of VVMS, I have to say, the program was just fabulous. I think that the IB program teaches students without all the pointless busy work that I got from the private school that I went to. The school is great and so are the teachers with the exception of a few that were subpar, but that is to be expected from any school. Overall, I think that VVMS helped me grow as a person in a way that no other school could have done.

It was an O.K. School. I made some new friends, and experienced a lot of new things. It needs some cosmetic work. While I was there, I got rude comments regarding my race (white) and there was a lot of gangs.

I am a parent that recently transferred my child from Sunrise Middle School. I did this for two reasons: 1) the opportunity to place my child in the challenging IB program. It allows students that are motivated to learn yes, there are middle school students that understand the value of a good education an opportunity to be in challenging classes, with other students that also want to receive a quality education; and 2) the opportunity for my child to experience a very dynamic and differentiated student body. The teachers are very caring and the administration Mrs. Jacobs and Mr. Callahan are extremely supportive. If you want your child to have the best of all worlds, send them to Vista Verde.

i have been at Vista Verde Middle School since 1990. I have worked in the field of teaching for thirty years and have never seen a more dedicated, student-oriented staff, that works for the best interests of the students. We work hard to set up each student for success. This is a great school to have your student attend!

Vista Verde Rocks!!! I attended Vista Verde & just loved the teachers & Ms. Jacobs in particular. She was a great influence & encouraged me to apply to the IB Program at North Canyon. Vista Verde had a great sports program & so many activities for students to get involved with. My experience at VVMS prepared me for high school.

Overall I have been pleased with the education my children have received at Vista Verde. All of my children have for the most part had a good experience. Occasionally there is a teacher they're not thrilled with but I truely believe that happens at any school with any student. Mostly they have had wonderful teachers who truely care about them academically and beyond. The children at Vista Verde have been blessed with having teachers who like working with middle school students and care about them. I like that Vista Verde has a lot to offer with the IB program, honors as well and the AVID program. The sports program is great, giving all students an opportunity to try different athletics as well as an all-star team to have some competition. The principal Elaine Jacobs has an open door policy and will always answer your questions honestly.

Have had 2 of my children attend Vista Verde and have been so pleased with the teachers and administration. We did a variance to come here, vs our home district school. Physical school could use some sprucing up but it is all about money and the newer schools that get built in newer & more affluent areas get the updated resources. Wish schools such as Vista Verde would get updated. The principal's efforts at bringing the IB program to this middle school make this a very desirable environment, especially since the elementary school program will feed into their school. This educational advantage is huge, and will help real estate values in this mixed economic area.

The learning environment at this school is very positive. There are outstanding programs for honors students (International Baccalaureate) and those who want to be the first in their family to graduate from college (AVID). Everyone at Vista Verde is focused on young people and their success, and it shows in every classroom!

Wonderful school with great teachers & actively-involved principal. They are very proud of their IB program but care about all of their students. School could use a facelift to be more appealing, but everything takes money and funds always seem to go to the newer schools in newer areas. This is a safe quality school in an area with changing & improving demographics. Truly the teachers make up for what the school is lacking to be cosmetically pleasing.

I think the IB program is the best thing to happen to vista verde. It is enabling our children, from around the valley, to have a place for advanced learning. And the sports program allows every student a chance to find what they like so when in high school they know what they want to persue. Go Vista Verde!

The Principal seems to be all about the IB Program - the IB Program is for a very small minority - if she concentrated on the rest of the school perhaps we could move the rating up instead of just 'performing'. Also, the school is very ugly. I would be depressed to go there - why don't they add some greenery - make it a school project by class or something - if the students had a nice place to go, it would uplift their spirits - it looks like a juvenile detention center. Everyone gets to play a sport - where is the competition - what makes them strive to do better if everyone get on automatically?

The open house was fantastic. I was able to meet all my son's teachers who genuinely seemed to enjoy teaching! so far my only dissapointment is in the transportation area. My son has to walk 1/2 mile to the bus stop by himself due to the way our subdivision is facing a major street. No resolution was made when i contacted transportation and was concerned for his safety.

The new principal is very grades (pro-teacher) oriented. She also seems to care about resolving problems promptly and doesn't tolerate inappropriate behavior. My son enjoys not having to deal with the occassional pressure when kids pick on the different students as the kids who normally 'bully' know it won't be tolerated.
