Some fabulous new teachers! We actually moved here from a different school to follow one of our favorites. Fingers crossed we get her next year in 3rd grade! I don't like the way that some teachers talk to children, though, in a very derogatory manner. Ever been in a school where teachers are allowed to blow whistles in children's faces? Where kindergartens are forced to walk with their arms folded across their chests, even ON STAIRS!!?? It's abhorrent, and I wish something could be done about it. Parent involvement stinks. I don't understand how two schools in the district are allowed to mandate parent involvement and other schools aren't. It puts Whittier at a disadvantage. I wish that some of the teachers and support staff (even the "behavior expert" spends a lot of time screaming at children. What??) would learn some better management techniques, but overall the curriculum is excellent, expectations are high, speech and language services are excellent, and my children look forward to going to school every day.
3 of my children are current students at Whittier. All of their teachers are, and have been, great teachers. The principal has the students' best interests in mind all of the time. My kids are all excelling on the standardized tests and are constantly learning. My oldest goes to ELP once a week, which is a great tool for those that need a little extra challenge. None of my kids, or any of my friends' kids seem to fall between the cracks or get left behind, but there are always new challenges for the kids at the top to work toward. I love this school and the staff!
I thought about sending my daughter here this year for kindergarten because the curriculum seems excellent. I have a cousin who is in the 3rd grade that attends this school. She is doing very well academically, and in that aspect, Whittier almost seems to be an Excelling school. But my concern was the bullying. My little cousin was constantly bullied by a boy in her class who actually physically assaulted her on more than one occasion. One of those times was with a pair of scissors. All the teacher ever did was send this student to the office time and again. I'm not sure if the kid was eventually expelled or not, but I do not feel comfortable sending my little girl to that school.
i will rate this school a 10. whittier is a very good school. it teaches me lots of new things that i didnt even know or thought of. I love Whittier!!!!!!!!!!!
Whittier is a great school. The teachers and staff are well-trained, dedicated, caring, professional, and hard-working.The principal and office staff are very nice, helpful, energetic, and patient. My daughter loved her teacher this year, she learned a lot in math, reading, spelling, science, writing and social studies.
This school has improved greatly in the last year, with becoming more committed to education rather than social activities. The teachers are good and committed to the students. I can only stress that this is one place where parent involvement is definitely all the difference. The principal is open to new ideas and isn't afraid to try them. The administrative staff is also very helpful at all times.
I am aware that Whittier is an 'underperforming' school, but I have seen a tremendous growth in the leadership and staff. The students have worked really hard to bring test scores up and the principal is a great assest to the school by holding teachers accountable for student achievement. Whittier is a great school in my opinion with great people to serve our children.
