Classes are short and teachers assign a lot of homework each night, which is not necessarily the best way to help kids learn. No tutoring, library time, or study time is available. Extracurricular activities are mostly run by parents. Girls cheerleading is the main focus. Parent involvement tends to be a very exclusive group, hand-selected by administration. Front office personnel are not readily available.
I think this school has great extracurricular opportunities and a thorough admin staff, good teachers.
My three children attend North Pointe Prep, and I have to say that it is the best charter school I have seen in Arizona. I have done a lot of research on charter schools and they are truly what they say they are all about. They definitely follow their mission statement: Knowledge, Character, Leadership. The high school students get to take classes at GCU during the school-day to accumulate college credits! It is truly a college prep. The teachers and staff really care about their students, they are not just another body or number as in large public schools. I would recommed this school to everyone!
My daughter has been going to NPP for 4 years. We both think NPP has a good academic program and extra curricular program. My daughter is a cheerleader and has the same expectations set for her as everyone else. I love the school because it is a safe and nurturing environment for my daughter to learn, and grow. I would highly recommend this school. Mr. & Mrs. Davenport are very caring and good hearted. This is the BEST school around.
I have a student who has attended NPP for many years. The teachers are the most dedicated I have seen in a public school. They are the backbone and strength of NPP. Dean Johnson works extremely hard to make all students feel welcome. Yes, there are some things that could be better. Parent involvement at all decision making levels would be appreciated. Even with that said NPP has been great for my college bound child. Great teachers, good friends and a great atmosphere for kids.
Quality of academic program: EXCELLENT! Availabity of extracurricular: My son does music, basketball and flag football. In my opnion Wonderful availability! Parent involvement: I see an above average level of parent involvement. If we were staying in the area I would NEVER move my son from this school. It is an excellent choice for kids to make great like minded friends that work for good grades and athletics.
Two of my children are enrolled at NPP, and we are very happy with their progress. This is a school for the academically minded student, if your child is interested in sports or the arts he/she will not be happy here. However, the school is everything it claims to be for those heading to College. The classes are demanding and the teachers are very supportive, if the parents contact them and stay on target with their child. I am contacted on bi-weekly basis by my children's parents and their are doing great. I wouldn't move my children anywhere else and encourage anyone interested in their child's sucess in school to enroll them here.
After I read some of the recent bitter reviews, I just had to write something. The discipline is not inconsistent at this school. The parents who write that it is are just trying to get back at the school because their child was held accountable. I give you the name of each person who wrote something nasty about the school and the cheerleaders, and they are all just upset because either their daughter didn't make the team, their child was disciplined for behavior or dress code or they didn't get some special treatment they were offered. If you are interested in the school's mission and philosophy, take the time to talk with one of the deans and visit the school.
My daughter is in her second year at NPP. She loves it there and I am coming around. Last year was a rough one. I didn t have the teacher support I would have liked. But this year has gotten off to a good start. I have read all the posts here and even though I like the school I do see the special treatment of the cheerleaders. I am disappointed in the fact that they are building a new gym and the old gym is being solely used for the cheerleaders. They could use it for a cafeteria for the kids to have a place to eat out of the hot sun and away from the bees and the cheerleaders could still practice there. I mean really how much time does it take to lay out the mats they need.
My daughter was a student at North Pointe for 1 year. I was not impressed with this school. The discipline varies from student to student, there is no consistancy this includes the dress code. My child was reprimanded in a very unprofessional manner. I would not recommend this school to parents.
The school year has just started and already they have more problems then they can handle! it's horrible and very stressful! Half the kids are repeating classes that they passed! One of my child's classmates was even brought down a class, even though that child had passed the math class with a 'b'. My son received a 'c', a passing grade, in his math class and was put in it again! in the handbook it says nowhere that if you receive a 'c' then you will repeat that class. This is just not fair! What makes things worse is that the person in charge with rearranging schedules will not rearrange them for another two weeks! I mean, these children are missing out on at least two weeks of a class they are supposed to be in, and instead have to repeat one they passed...I think they really need to shape up!
North Pointe Prepartory is a fabulous school. The education is excellent, and the quality of classes and the staff is well above any other school that I am familiar with.
Our daughter is finishing 8th grade and has been encouraged and challenged to step up and do her best. As a parent, I appreciate that all students are expected to take Spanish every year for 6 years (helpful for employment here) and that continuation to college is the main emphasis in planning their overall curriculum. Their athletic departments are not as developed as regular public middle and high schools, however, that is increasing, and the possibility of your child participating is increased due to the size of the school. I have found that any problems or complaints are handled in a very professional manner, and parents are valued and listened to. No school is perfect, but NPP is striving to provide a quality education in a safe environment. I'm so glad we found them when my daughter was entering 7th grade so she can go to this school all 6 years.
I am a parent of two children that attend North Pointe. I used to be pleased with the school, however there is a high turn around in the teachers. My daughter has just got her fourth english teacher this year. The dress could is a good idea except the cheerleaders don't have to follow it, which isn't fair to the other students. I am pulling my children out of this school at the end of this year. Last year the school was organized and the students were treated with dignity and respect something, that the school has a great lack of this year. The favortism is geared towards the cheerleaders. Which is sad because the focus should be on the quality of education, not the cheerleading program. Dissappointment is the only way to discribe North Pointe Prep at this time. I am hoping for a change.
I am a student at North Pointe Prep and I love it there! My parents thought about putting me in a school closer to home but at North Pointe I have great friends and teachers who care so I talked them out of it! I don't have to worry about fights or drugs at school anymore.
I am one of those so called 'bitter parents'. Anyone who looks at the test scores will see this school is not what it claimed to be when I enrolled my son. The smarest thing I ever did was take him out before it was too late.
NPP was a great school! My daughter loved it very much, but unfortuneatly our family moved and she was not able to attend NPP any longer. Now she is not doing as well in school because she doesn't like it anywhere near how much she liked North Pointe. Sending her was the best thing I had done and to the parents that say 'cheerleaders' get special benefits, no they don't. My daughter was a cheerleader and she had no special benefits, she got treated like any other student did. I think the Teachers and Staff are awesome at this school, Ms. Santangelo, Senora Rogers Mr. and Mrs. Davenport and Mr. Raso are all great and very good with all the students! If you want your child to have a good education with great teachers you should send them to NPP because the only mistake i evr made was having her leave that school!
NPP has great goals and the ability to help the kids achieve them. There have been some teacher switching but all and all I believe the teachers care about the kids, my daughter loves the school (and she is not a cheerleader) and is doing alot better here than at a public school. Her self esteem is up, her grades are high b's and the family is happy!
After reading some of the input from August and September, I couldn't help but give my two cents. North Pointe Preparatory is an awesome school! My son is getting an awesome education (Stanford scores in the 99th percentile). Don't dismiss this school because of a couple of bitter parents. If you are interested in a college prep education for your child, check it out for yourself. My son loves it there. He has great friends and great teachers. I wouldn't send him anywhere else.
