I have an "insider's view" of the school, having taught there for years (I left by choice when I saw that the ship was sinking), and I sadly have to report that this is among the worst schools in Arizona. The school has no clear mission and no real leadership. The Head of School is whoever she needs to be in the moment. She says what the person in the room needs to hear to avoid confrontation. Sadly, many parents have bought this, but, given their low enrollment numbers, many have also caught on. The school too often gives in to the whims of parents and blindly follows the hot educational buzzword of the moment. There is no real understanding of what children need to learn and no understanding of how hold children to high standards of learning and behavior. The kids there are great. They deserve better.
The Jess Schwartz High School is, from my point of view, one of the best HighSchool parents and students could hope for. Two of my children are there , 9th and 11th Grade and are very happy. Besides excellent Academics, great moral values, sense of belonging, Jewish identity, Community awareness, volunteering, developing the desire of learning...and I am forgetting plenty, what strikes me the most is the dedication of the entire staff from Teachers, Administration, Principal to the Head of school, they all care for the students and strive to provide them with the best learning content and environment. Although each and every staff member deserves congratulations, Dr. Johnson is definitely the driving force behind her team. My Rating 6 stars
There are ample intense academic programs offered, standard classes at a college-preparatory honors level. There are as many sport programs and clubs as there are students who desire to partake in them. The administration is open to any student who is interested in creating an extracurricular activity. The school is intensifying its music and arts programs to cater to whomever would like to participate. Parents are always more than welcome, even encouraged, to volunteer and help out at school. It is a very homey environment.
The teachers are well qualified and nice people. There is no music, but there is a well developed art program, lots of sports offered, and a good phys ed class. Parents are often in and out of the school.
This is without a doubt an amazing school.
