I was looking for a school where my child could get more than academics and we are so happy we found South Valley! My son participates in hip-hop dance class and it has boosted his self confidence. If you are looking for a school, I suggest you go take a tour for yourself.
Very little learning gets done because students come to class checked out, unprepared, and disrespectful. The students claim that they do not learn anything, but they will not shut up or get off their phones long enough to learn anything.
Teachers are weighed down with way too much paperwork since most of the students are at least two years below grade level. Also, the administration makes it virtually impossible to fail a student. You need to get creative with grading, otherwise most of the students would fail, and the teacher would have to waste time calling all the parents. Schedules are not consistent, and the slightest distraction, such as a school dance, will have students off task all day.
Furthermore, class periods can be up to two hours. That is way too long for a middle schooler to stay on task. Schedules also change frequently, so there is no consistency.
This school has no discipline policies. There is a high turn-over rate of staff. The staff do not have the support or resources they need. All of the students need counseling, but very few receive it. They need a school psychologist full-time and guidance counselors (they have none). They also need security guards (they have none). These kids have a lot of potential, but the school needs to address their behavior issues first. The few students who do receive help from psychologists and counselors do beautifully; it's unfortunate that they can't provide all of the students with appointments to a guidance counselor like a public school is legally mandated to.
I would not recommend this school to any student who actually wants an education. They say they are a prep school, its actually an alternative school. They will give ANY student a passing grade, no matter how much they actually learn or do in class.
