This review is for the 2014-2015 school year. I hope this helps parents. 1) I love that students can bring a morning & afternoon snack, it helps my kids stay focused. 2) Not happy at all to see lunchtime this year REDUCED from 15min to 12min. Ridiculous! 3) grading scale changed and a 'C'=80%. This is just plain unfair to students 4) My 7yr old tells me she hates reading now.I ask why she says because during class reading time they are not allowed to ask the teacher for help if they can't pronounce a word or don't know its meaning. Why send my kid to school if the teacher won't be a teacher? 5) Concerns with the 4th grade teacher: sent home book report packet with unclear instructions. Was told to visit the teacher website if we have questions. I found the assignment posted exactly as the teacher took it from another website. Showed instructions for the teacher as to how to present& gave examples. I went over it with my child and ended up doing his teacher's job. We did not encounter anything remotely close to these issues last year or year before. 6) Lots of teacher turnover- and many of the great one's have left. 7) We will be withdrawing our kids from the school.
This school is awesome! So many resources available for the parents, students and caregivers. I really enjoy the after school activities.
Paideia Academies is a school that goes above and beyond expectation. Their teachers motivate children to acheive their highest potential. Instead of the traditional classroom model of "shut up and learn" they break the mold and teaching becomes an interactive process. Their model has not only helped teach my children but has instilled in them confidence in their own abilities. Paideia Academies provides a loving and caring environment that enables all its students to express themselves while learning how to be .The administration, Mrs. Mendonca and Dr. Winsor are just as amazing as the teachers. They remain involved with their students beyond registration and reprimanding which is a model that so many other schools can benefit from. Paideia makes you feel like it is more than a school, more like a family. Paideia Academies provides the opportunity for children to learn and grow in a safe and caring environment. It is rare to find one teacher that has the passion to teach students beyond the boundaries of the classroom and it is even rarer still to find a school that does.
Poor school. Great philosophy's ... Poor execution. Magical with words, disgraceful with actions. Even the teachers keep on leaving. Not what we were promised when we toured the school.
My son has been attending this school for two years. As it was brand new when we first enrolled, we didn't know what to expect. Each year, we've observed the school getting better and better! Paideia incorporates the Core Knowledge Sequence, Spalding Writing Road to Reading, Junior Great Books, Shared Inquiry, Singapore Math, Foss, and Engineering is Elementary. Paideia adopted the principles of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People in 2013 which builds leadership & character in young scholars. The other day, after school, a scholar asked me if I needed help carrying items to my car as my hands were full, my jaw almost dropped! Another young scholar, who was exiting the building as I was entering, backed up, allowing me and my toddler to go through first, amazing! In 2014, the Urban Garden and the Paideia Orchestra were created! The principal's dedication to this school cannot be matched! He is involved with everything from taking the boys on Boy Scout trips to digging in the dirt to prepare the garden to implementing the best programs possible for this school! We look forward to many more years at Paideia and we can't wait to find out what new exciting things lie ahead!
I have no idea where the two reviewers have gotten their information, but I am a hopeful teacher for next year at this school. I have substituted several times since January 2014, and I assure you, they surely DO check references for teachers. They may not have the highest test scores in the valley, but you have to remember - this is only the second year this school has been open. Also, test scores are not the end all and be all of education. What happened to the idea that our children have to really function in the real world when they get out of school. This school is progressive in the concept of not only teaching the students the basics, but also teaching them how to work together for the common good, and how to think outside the box. To watch these students work together as well as help raise each other up is absolutely beautiful to behold. They do work on raising test scores, and their curriculum is second to none. Give this school a chance... I'll wager this school will be one of the most sought after schools for your child to attend in the next five years. I literally envision an application process and waiting list for your child to attend this school in the next few years.
Terrible school, below average teachers. Administration is shoddy at best. Lowest test scores in the area.
I truly love this school! My youngest of 3 children is a Paideia Scholar. The quality of education he has received while enrolled at Paideia far exceeds my experiences with my oldest two boys, who also began their educational journey through the Charter School system. Dr. Windsor's vision of whole child education is amazing to behold! The teachers are amazing, especially Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Courier! I love that woman! She set my child off to a wonderful start! Love, Love, Love Paideia!
Surprised by all the positive reviews. This school is so poorly run, its a joke. The principal of the school does not even conduct background checks for his staff. I guess a 20 dollar background check isnt worth the safety of children. And look no further than the school's standardized test scores (the school was awarded a D grade in 2013, the lowest grade possible) and the high turnover rate for proof that this school is being run by administration who has no business in the education field. Do yourself a favor and enroll your child in a different school. Any school would be a better choice.
This school is amazing. Over the years my kids attended other public schools and none of them, including homeschooling could come close to measuring up to Paideia. The Staff and teachers really love and care for your child. Now I know as parents we are told that no child gets left behind n the class, but know that's not true. There are a lot of teachers out there that just don't take the time to help those that really need it. You wont find that here! The teachers here take it upon themselves to set up tutoring for kids who are struggling BEFORE they get behind. Another problem with most schools is the problem with bullies! At this school bullying is not tolerated. My kids now love to go to school, which used to be a battle everyday. We gave up a lot to move close to Paideia, and I don't regret any of it. I really can go on all day about this school, it amazes me everyday. But if you live in the area and are looking for a new or better school for your kids, please take the time to stop by and tour the campus. The morning assembly is every morning and is a must see! I promise you will fall in love with it! I feel truly blessed to be a part of the Paideia Family.
Paideia has exceeded our expectations for our 6 year old son. Living in South Phoenix, we've heard the horror stories of schools in the area, but all concerns were put to rest after our little dude's first full year at the academy. We appreciate the community involvement and the focus on strong character development. To anyone in the area looking for a great elementary school experience for their child I will unwaveringly recommend Paideia.
Paideia Academy Of South Phoenix such a wonderful school for my child. I am very pleased with the teachers. My Child LOVES attending his class every day. Most importantly, besides all the friends he meets at school. He does enjoy his teacher. We are happy to have our child enrolled at this campus.
Paideia Academy of South Phoenix is exactly what the neighborhood and surrounding areas needed. A school where the principal, teachers and staff care for one another and especially the students. The school provides great academics, NON bullying environment and the great caring teachers. The principal is the GREATEST he cares about all the children, knows them by name, and interacts daily with them. He is seen on the campus all the time and knows whats going on inside and outside the classrooms. The school is overall 100% spectacular. My 4th grade son went from being sad, bullied and low in academics in his previous school to being happy, full of friends and doing great academically at PAIDEIA. I highly would recommend Paideia for any school aged child and family that is looking for a school that provides great academics, a caring and safe environment and trustworthy understanding staff.
Paideia Academy of South Phoenix uses best practice methods of teaching and learning, which encourage children to be thinkers and life-long learners. Teachers are well trained in the curriculum. Academics are not the only focus. Paideia understands that children need to feel and be safe and healthy in order to learn. Character and health are part of the daily routine. The administration is quick to solve any behavior or other problem, with the goal of creating a safe and positive environment for all. As a former teacher, teacher trainer and homeschooling parent, Paideia is the only public school choice for my children. My children have continued with what they learned in homeschooling about math concepts and problem solving and one can now solve multi-digit problems in his head. My first grader struggles with reading/phonics, but has learned so much in the first quarter of the year, that my husband and I continue to be amazed each time he picks up a book or writes a story or list on his own. I also have to recommend the special education staff as highly educated and experienced, as well as understanding and caring.
I have been an educator and school leader for nearly 25 years. I've never found anything quite like Paideia Academy of South Phoenix. There is a certain feeling of peace when you walk on the campus. The front office staff are welcoming, the teachers are excellent, the parents are amazing, and the students wonderful. I founded Paideia Academy of South Phoenix but it is beyond me now. It has taken a life of its own. I'm so proud of the people of Paideia. Thank you, staff, teachers, and students but especially parents for making Paideia a welcome place of love and learning! Dr. Winsor
This School is absolutely perfect! I had lost all hope in the school system and was homeschooling my kids. Then I heard about this school and what they were about and decided to uproot my family and move close to it so my kids could go there. And I must say it is the best decision I have ever made. If I could give them more then 5 stars I would. The principal knows all the kids by name, and the teachers make it a point to work closely with the kids and parents, they dont just say they will as in my experience. The faculty really care about the kids and their families. It really is an amazing school and I feel so blessed that my kids have had the opportunity to go there. And most of all my kids love it!
I am loving this school. My little boy is in pre-K with Ms. Maria. We started him in October. In the past 2 1/2 months, he has learned so much. I am amazed. I am looking forward to enrolling him in Kindergarten and see him just grow with the Paideia Academy family.
There are not enough words to describe Paideia Academy South Mountain. I have struggled with trying to find a great school for my kids to attend. Over the years, I have come across teachers at other schools that just didn't seem to care. I have never met a school principal before, except during an assembly when the principal was talking to all parents. I have never been a part of a school where I felt that my kids were safe and loved. Until Paideia. I have a child who has issues with academics. Her teacher, Mrs. Shunick, has done and continues to do, everything in her power to help my child. My other children's teachers are constantly in contact with me about any positive feedback about my kids, and also to discuss ways of solving any issues with them. The principal, and co-founder, Dr. Winsor, knows all my kids by name and I am in constant communication with him. He loves each and every child that attends Paideia Academy. He charted Cub Scouts through the school and also brought in Girl Scouts so the children of Paideia can become a part of something great. This school is an absolute Godsend!
Paideia Academy of South Phoenix not only does a great job at teaching the required curriculum but they also go back to the old ways of teaching values. For example, the other day, my grandson (a first grader) fell on the playground in the wet grass. I was only 10' away from him but before I could get to him one of the kids who is a member of the student council helped him up, made sure he was OK, brushed off the grass, and told my grandson that he would replace the candy cane he broke in his fall the next day of school. How refreshing it was to see character like this in this day and age.
I am a grandparent of 7 children attending Paideia Academy of South Phoenix. My son & family moved so their 3 school-age kids can attend this school after my daughter's 4 school-age kids started going here and hearing about the principals and values this school stands for. Both of my kids were so distressed at the public school. The teachers had no concept of what the kids had learned, and most importantly, not learned. The kids were getting good grades and passing-when they couldn't spell, read, write, or even add a number +1. So they took the kids out of the public school & home-schooled them. Then Paideia came into being and it is a God-send to our family. The teachers do NOT want the parents to help the kids with their homework (as other schools had insisted, leaving the teaching to the parents). The teachers here want to know what the CHILD can do-not the parent. When picking the childrent up from school, more often than not, the teacher will accompany the child to the car so they can let the parent know how well the child did that day. We don't have to wait weeks or months to find out that more help is needed.. The Principal and the Teachers truly care!
