I spoke to my neighbor and his kid about Centennial to get their feedback in preparation for my own kids' future middle school plans. They both had nothing but good things to say about the school. They said it was a good community of kids and it was a safe positive learning environment. They also felt the instruction was great and challenging enough for the student. My neighbor also said he wouldn't change their decision if he had to do it over again.
After reading the comments below, I wanted to point out that many of them are from a few years ago. Great things are happening at this school with the addition of a great new principal! This is a great place to send your child! We have loved our last 3 years and the experiences at CMS!
Our school puts students' learning at the top of its priorities. Centennial's staff is willing and able to step up to any challenge.
This is our 3rd year at Centennial and it has been a wonderful experience! The staff is amazing, dedicated and knowledgeable in their subject areas. The principal Jocelyn Sims in her second year here has provided leadership that is well respected by the students, staff and community. There are many opportunities for students and parents to get involved. I would highly recommend CMS and encourage anyone who would like to know more about the school to come meet Mrs. Sims and take a tour.
The school is doing brand new things, which have been wonderful for student improvement. The school is much better than the score listed on the page.
This school is wonderful. My daughter has special needs and they were more accommodating than they were legally required to be. They helped her learn and grow, not only academically, but as a person. She is well prepared for high school and I am so glad she attended this school. The administration and teachers are committed to helping the students in any way feasible.
Both of my sons have been students at this school and i was impress up until last semester and current. My son who is in the 8th grade has been subjected to instegating nonsense. No mediation taken, One word against another, No due process. Just plain out assumption and stereotypical bull. I travel out of district so that my son could learn at a better performing instituion, instead you have teachers there that really do not need to instruct nor fasciltate and adminstrators that make abrupt decisions in which many occasions have violated Ferpa. I am truely disappointed.
I am not impressed with any institution where some staff members are bigger BULLIES than the students who attend. I would not send my children to any school where teachers feel glorified at leveling put-downs at students, just because they can. You see citizens, not all teachers are suited for the job, like a known few here at Centennial Middle. Some are teachers because a piece of paper say they are. I'm just saying. Parents, beware of the "paycheck" staff at this school. Maybe this is a sign of the times, just saying, when teachers talk about students to other students, I can't tolerate that, no more so than I agree with an confronting a student before other students because they get an ego boost from hurting a child's feelings. No, I would get as far away from CMS as I could with my children close intact. Just saying... This is the sort of thing that brings on suicidal thoughts in children when the find they can't trust the adults at the school to protect them, physically and mentally.
Ms.Michelle, the principal, is very involved with the staff, and children. She makes a visit to all activities and main events that she physically can. On the other hand not all the teachers present professionally and it is reflected in their ability to manage their classrooms. There is a problem with bullying, and the Kyrene district does not have a productive discipline plan in place. The bullies continue to bully and their targets remain their targets. If a target finally has enough and strikes back because the adults have not managed the bully the target child is punished as an aggressor. The system is not balanced and works in favor of the bully. this is a district problem, not just this school.
The majority of the teachers that serve this school are smart and dedicated. However, I must say the principal is lenient and backs down to the students. I recommend a different school.
My daughter goes there. There was 3 different situations with the girls this year... fights and mean katty talk among them. However the teachers stepped right in before these situations developed into real fights and in each occasion all the girls bridged right back to friends again. That to me is impressive. Very happy to know the staff is hands on with the students and that the kids are comfortable enough to go them with things like this.
My son went there for 6th thru 8th grade. Beware, the school has a police officer stationed onsite. Maybe there is a reason for this? I won't elaborate. Teaching staff is friendly and dedicated. Curriculum is pretty much straight AIMs material. I'd give the school a B-.
I love Centennial, although it is reffered to as the "ghetto school" and in the students opinion, is ignored by the Kyrene School District. It has it's imperfections like any other middle school, and yes there are fights every now and then but it's really easy to stay out of that knd of stuff. It also has a million clubs and sports to try. When you leave Centennial it feels like your leaving your family because by 8th grade you become really close to your teachers and the kids in your pod, i left with many great memories and I know that anyone who goes there will too. oh and 8C ROCKSSS ;)
I have two boys that attend this school and I love it! No problems. Principle and teachers go out of their way for the students.
Thou there's a 'No Bulling' on the school grounds does not mean there's not complete rudeness out through the student population. Fair warning, if your child is new this year to the school. Beware..
my child goes to Centennial Middle School and she can't wait to get there in the morning! she tells me that the teachers are great and she understands things and doesn't feel embarrassed to raise her hand when she doesn't understand something. She says she also feels safe knowing theres a police on campus. she also tells me all the teachers and students are friendly. homework to is easy and she doesn't hate it! She says she also loves the lunch there and how big the Cafeteria is. getting to classes for her isn't challenging because she gets 4 minutes and that gives her enough time to go to the restroom when she needs and get to class on time. she also likes the announcements on the monotor, she can see the people and hear clearly! she also loves the varity of sports they have. My 6th grader love middleschool!
I was a student at Centennial and I didn't like how little control teachers had over the other students. Many of my classmates behaved inappropriately during both lunch and inside classrooms. I did like most of my teachers though, they were nice and I felt challenged....which I hear is a good thing. There is also a problem with cliques at the school, I have seen more people without friends at this school than anywhere else.
Outstanding school! I recently attended Cenntenial and I was very pleased with the teachers and staff. The teachers are very helpful and the principal and assistant principal are magnificent. I suggest team 8A and 8D if parents are looking to register a child of theirs in 8th grade.
Centennial is a parents nightmare. This is my last child at this school and thank goodness he's in the 8th grade. This school does not prepare the students for high school at all. The Principal does not listen to the parents concerns. We cannot wait until we get out of the Kyrene district. I never understood what the big deal was about Kyrene. It's nothing special. There are too many issues to even begin to list them all here. Suffice to say, we have not been happy with Centennial or Kyrene.
