I absolutely love this school and it's staff in everyway. All of my children have attended in every grade from K to 8th. The kindergarten teacher was the best, she taught my youngest and made it so welcoming and inviting to both of us, you rock Ms. Erin! Every year they do things to improve their school and the things that they offer. As everyone in life you learn new things everyday, if you are not welcoming to change then life will get very boring. The love for every child at this school is absolutely amazing, from the director all the way down to the amazing kitchen staff. They listen to your concerns and are quick to resolve them. Going to school should not be an UN pleasant experience for any child and Acorn goes up and beyond to provide both you and your children with the extended family you deserve. The love for children is seen from the moment you walk in the doors! Thank you Acorn for providing the safe and loving Home for my family!
So to the parent who said that the pre-K teacher is lazy and gets away with it because she is friends with higher up. That's funny as I personally can tell you that the higher up has pushed and held Ms.. Sheryl to the same standard as all other teachers at West. Just wait and see how her children in that class test results are with the AIMS benchmarking. Lazy really she has so many children at so many different academic levels and is always tweaking her lesson I would say there is a staff member who could step up more within that classroom but even I wouldn't say that staff is lazy just clueless. As you maybe a parent however, I believe you must also work at Acorn now or in the past as most of your comment sounds like an employee and if you are that is sad you would vent on a public website. I believe we all work very hard for each and every child at Acorn yes I agree some children maybe hard to teach but all schools have those children within their school. Acorn loves having parents help and if you were told that after 3rd grade you can't I would go to the Director and speak with her because it maybe certain teachers.
Acorn is an all around amazing school! I have never seen such dedicated teachers and staff at a school in a long time. I struggled with the concept of returning to work after I had my 2 boys. However, seeing the amazing staff in preschool, I knew I was making the right decision. My children have been attending Acorn ever since. There are always exciting events/activities to keep the children engaged in learning. This school is ahead of the game with their incorporation of Common Core Curriculum, differentiated instruction, and hands on learning. While on campus, I am often greeted by friendly staff or returning students. Any student is welcome and most find Acorn to be their home away from home. The teachers push their students to grow in character and intelligence, just the way they would their own. Like any school, there are hiccups now and again, but I have yet to find a school that comes close to Acorn s dedication to its students.
I love this school! My daughter has been with Ms. Sheryl since she was 2 and now in pre=k she is well prepared for K and already doing K work...she push the children in a good way always helping them reach their potential. Lazy? I am not sure what or who you refer to but the pre-k team has done wonders. Ms. Sheryl to my knowledge is working on a Masters and is Montessori certified as well as being a highly qualified teacher which is not required but has been accomplished because she cares. If you have a problem I would speak with her rather than post here, she is always available. Love the school and teacher!
Wow! We are in our 13th year at Acorn Montessori and currently have a 7th, 4th, 1st and K enrolled. My oldest two are now a Sr, and Jr. at a local college prep school which they were well prepared for during each of their 9 years at Acorn. We have adopted 3 kids from the foster system, who have dealt with emotional and academic issues due to their previous living situations. Our youngest has Down syndrome and is currently in the kindergarten class. With each of our six children, I have found if I am willing to listen to and respect the staff, they are more than willing to help with my children's very individualized needs. I think only one of my children was "the easy one" in class. Mrs. Cynthia and her staff have not only done their best to educate my children but also have served our family's needs. As for the person writing about volunteering in classes only until 3rd grade? Just this year my 7th grader was in need of "parental support" in his class. I was told I could show up when ever I wanted. As for Mrs. Akins, my 2 who have had her have been my most challenging academically. She was a true team member when it came to helping us to motivate them. One of the best!
Acorn has been our family's school of choice for the past 10 years. Our children love to go to school. They began in preschool and now are in Middle School. The expectations are high, the work is tough. All of the teachers my children have experienced have been caring and dedicated. At times they are demanding as they push to reach a higher level of education. The leadership of the school is sincere. Acorn is a school of choice. At times administration may offer a family an alternate choice of schools. Not every child is a match. The diverse population makes me think most children succeed beyond all expectations at Acorn. Acorn is more than a Pre-School through grade 8. It is a place that students return to visit years after graduating. I know there are several graduates now working at the school. Parents feel comfortable sharing their concerns openly with administration. I regret that a few out of thousands who attend write negatively on this site. Our family loves this school.
This school the staff were bullying my child. Teachers stating things to other children about my child as well as demeaning him in front of others almost daily. Numerous meetings were held with staff and principal and continued to occur. Their slogan kids first, certainly is not true.
Sorry that my granddaughter won't be returning - unfortunate that this school is fine for preschool thru 2nd grade - but third grade was a disaster - and administration was deaf, dumb and blind to our concerns.
My daughter is thriving at this school. We enrolled her this last year in kindergarten, and we have seen her learn grow so much in the last 8 months. These teachers genuinely love their students, and dedicate so much time, effort, and energy to ensuring that the children succeed.
My daughter has gone to Acorn Montessori since preschool, and is now in 4th grade. I could not be happier with her education. Acorn strives to reach each learner and meet their individual needs. My daughter got in the 98th percetile on the AIMS test in math and 95th percentile in reading. Currently she is in the gifted class with Mrs. Akins, as she was for 3rd grade, and is very successful. I know my daughter's academic and social needs are met at this school where all of the teachers know her name and greet her as she walks down the hallway. Thank you to all the great teachers at Acorn.
BE AWARE OF THE 4TH GRADE TEACHER WENDY DAUGHETEE! I had my son in her class for two weeks. My son was forced to stand up ALL day for two days in a row for not pushing in his chair when he went to throw away his breakfast!! When I asked her about it she admitted she did take away his chair and said, " That is my classroom rule. If you don't push your chair in you loose it for the rest of the day and must do your work standing up." He was not even allowed to lean on his desk while taking a test. I told her that is not acceptable to me. She said Oh well, that is my classroom rule. She also forced him to miss both recesses one day because he did poorly on a test and had to have another lesson and retake the test. The principal did not believe me when I told her what happened. I said that she proudly admitted it to me in front of the other teacher and said that is her class rule.
Acorn is home for my kids, during the day. As a school, both campuses are welcoming, warm and busy about the excitement of learning! Having been raised by parents who were both excellent educators themselves, and coming from another state that had considerably greater funding allocations for its schools, my first concern in moving to this area was finding the right atmosphere to promote citizenship and self-control right alongside academic, artistic and athletic development in my children. The only school I was satisfied with was Acorn! My oldest daughter graduated with their first eighth grade class in spring of 2010, and went on to the most-difficult-to-enter college prep high school in our district, along with two other classmates. Our preschooler and kindergardner are brimming with lessons and personal achievements every day when they come home. Being exhausted by bedtime from the fun activities they rack up each day is a perk, too. They all adore their friends, work through common gradeschool mishaps with dignity, respect and manners, and all but run to the car each morning to go back. Our family is thrilled with Acorn and its programs, staff and dedication. Very few leave.
In this school it is noted to be a traditional/Montessori blend that is how the Charter is written. In preschool Ms. Sheryl is taking her Montessori training now and has got all A's and is bringing more and more Montessori into her classroom. Pre-k is Ms. Alana who is Montessori trained and is also working with the Saxon and McGraw-Hill to help advance those children who are ready for that style of learning. As the children go up in grades Acorn moves more into the traditional style of teaching in order to prepare the children for what other classrooms are like. AIMS score are correct and we are proud of them. As far as the principal that has to be the rudest thing I've ever heard. All schools may not be a match for all children theat is why parents have a choice. I have always been picking on where my children go to school and now I'm proud to say my grandchildren also attend here now. It's great that this is America and we have freedom of speech I speak from the heart. Come to Acorn and see for yourself.
I havve only gone to this school for 2 years but it has helped me greatly. It's very hard to find schools that give one on one attention and help from the teachers. My siblings on the other hand have all gone for 3 years and they are still loving it. I admit that the Principal does not always have her head on straight and sometimes does not think things through but she is still amazing and does a really good job. The students who have a harder time with learning get the attention they need and are getting much better. My sister couldn't read at all and she was already 10 and she goes into the school and is reading by the end of the first semester, all becasue the teachers and other staff members gave her the help she needed. This is an amazing school!!
I have had my children in this school since it opened and it is getting better every year. I can't wait to see all the improvements they have done over the summer.
i am a student at acorn in the 7th grade class and it is a great fun school
This school not only serves the educational needs of their students but also acts as a resource and support system for the parents. The teaching staff is excellent and well qualified. The support that students as well as parents receive from every member of their staff is amazing. Would highly recommend to anyone.
I rated this school an excellent based on the education my kids have received. The teachers are wonderful...They really love their jobs and care about their students...The owner of the school on the other hand needs to be more consistent and stick to what they say they are going to do. Office staff is unorganized. One hand doesn't know what the other is doing half the time.
I absolutely love this school. My children have learned so much, they surprise me everyday. I would highly recommend this school to anyone. They take the time to listen and also accommodate your needs. I also love how my children can work at their own pace and really take the time to learn the lesson and soak it all in. My children need that kind of attention.
