Both my children have attended KMS and I have to say that I haven't been happy with the school overall. Bullying here is a real issue. Both my children have experienced this, my son was able to resolve the issues on his own but it resulted in him just "getting through" his last year at KMS instead of being able to enjoy his time there. I know that children will be children but the amount of inappropriate behavior that is conducted there is almost appalling. My daughter informed me that one of her peers was in trouble at school for having marijuana on her and that several students come to school high. I think with all of the social distractions it is difficult for the children to focus on the academics. If I were to do it all over again I would not put my kids in KMS.
If a child is experiencing an issue, there are many ways to deal with it. And, this school has numerious programs including the Rachel's Challenge FOR Clubs. My son has numerous friends who attend KMS from his football teams and I've never heard the remarks below from any of those parents.
Racism and bullying are bigl a problem at KMS, especially if you are a white male. The administration is aware of the problem(s), but have not found an effective way to deal with it, citing "cultural differences." There are some really good teachers at the school and their performing arts program is one of the best in the district. However, the social environment , lack of respect for authority, low academic expectations, and frequent classroom disruptions, result in a poor learning environment. If your child does not academically qualify for the "Prep Program," I would strongly consider enrolling your child in another middle school.
I went here for all 3 of my middle school years and found it to be an excellent school! I got plenty of help from staff and fellow students. i also learned A LOT. I think that anyone who feels that there is bullying due to race, then thats not completely true. It never has anything to do with race when being bullied..a student normally brings it upon themselves or the bullies just pick a feature to torment a student for. So, saying that it's "not a good school to go to if youre white" , is completely and utterly FALSE. And also "buses in too many kids from undesirable areas to keep enrollment up" is also false. They just giving students an equal opportunity to get a good education and KMS is the place to get t!
I ended up taking my kid out due to constant bullying. Not a good school to go to if your white! Lots of racisim in Kyrene Middle School and the Administration can't stop it.
We came from an expensive private school and KMS has exceeded our expectations! Challenging classes, approachable teachers who enjoy what they do and great leadership from the principal. At the private school, every decision and change was painstaking with administration taking forever to complete a task. At KMS, they jump right in, make the change, analyze it, tweek it and so far... the experience has been a success for my child. I feel my child is well prepared for high school (and perhaps college too) after the courses taken and also had great exposure to music, art, P.E. and computers. I give KMS a big thumbs up and am looking forward to the new challenges they have in store for my next child who will attend middle school soon.
Kyrene Middle School buses in too many kids from undesirable areas to keep enrollment up,and the apples dont fall far from the trees if you know what i mean.My son tells me of fights every day at the bus area, loud disruptive students, and teachers that are overwhelmed with "BAD APPLES"
This school has had some growing pains, but I am still pleased with the education my child received at KMS. The Music and Art Dept. are amazing. There are some incredible teachers at KMS, a prep program, and lots of opportunities for all. Sure there are some 'bad apples' as in any school but overall I feel my daughter had a great experience at KMS.
I love KMS, it has great diversity and has great teachers! I love it here!
I would not let my daughter attend KMS this year after what I learned from last year. We moved here 6 yrs ago to be in a great school district, loved Waggoner, hated KMS...what a disappointment! The school has gone down in so many areas. Test scores, which many parents tried to bring to the schools attention in various meetings, but very little if any changes were make. The constant discipline the teachers are having to deal with, taking away from the other student's learning. Their form of punishment. The bullying that is constant and students are afraid of retaliation. My daughter said there were fights almost every day out by the buses, behind the buildings, everywhere. She did not feel safe and I did not feel like school should be a scary place for her. We are so happy we enrolled her in a charter school this year.
KMS is a great school that gives lots of opportunities to some students who may not otherwise have had the chance to experience all middle school should be. Are there challenges? Yes, but my experience has been that the challenges are delt with in a timely professional manner. My youngest daughter attended all 3 years and participated in student council, drama club, a media class, chorus, Spanish and a musical production. She has made life-long friends and was always happy about going to school. All of the teachers we had the pleasure of meeting were AWESOME! Ms. Pam Adams is the best! She is always willing to help and always friendly and should be back at the front desk! Change is not easy but all children deserve a chance at a quality education and thanks to KMS for providing one!
Ineffective and incompetent. The teachers and staff used to spend their time teaching. So much time is wasted every day correcting behaviors, breaking up fights and handing out detentions that bear no consequences. Obviously detention is an ineffective form of discipline as the students spend the time napping, texting and listening to smuggled music at their desks. During class the teachers waste so much time explaining concepts to kids who don't care they can't challenge the ones who do want to learn. Maybe if we flunked more kids and rewarded the ones who did great our scores would be higher.
The test scores and accountablity for KMS have decreased over the last few years. I have been very disappointed in this schol, because of the some of the teacher quality, unsafe campus, and lack of challenging work. Their are a few great teachers, but unfortunately the bad outweighs those few teachers. I would not recommend this school to anyone.
this has gone from a very outstanding school, to extremely 'ghetto', in a short period of time. over two thirds of my child's science classmates were flunking as of third quarter. the teachers seem very caring and dedicated, but the administration appears lost and adrift in a sea of apathy. many students are now bused in for credit dollars and provide nothing but discipline problems, which are a major distraction to the few students left, who are trying to learn. this school has been a major disappointment.
I have been disappointed with this school. There are some great teachers, but also some teachers that should change professions! This year the school failed their requirements for math. They had no plan until the last 4 months of school for improvement. My quiet child was ignored when needed help, was bullied and wasn't helped until I called the police, and in the 3 years my child has attended the school, I have yet to get a call back from the numerous times I left messages for the principal.
KMS is a wonderful, inclusive school with dynamic and knowledgable teachers and staff, supportive administrators, and a wide array of classes and extracurricular activities. I recommend this school to anyone.
This school is very diverse. Also it has a great technology program, dedicated teachers, and outstanding performing arts program for a public school. Tjhe campus is clean and large. This school has great sport teams. I don't see why anyone wouldn't love KMS. Go Scorpions!
this school is excellent! I would reccomend any parent to send their child to kyrene middle school
This school is great! It has a prep program for kids who are ahead. And all of the classes are great! Also the staff are great and try to make sure that every child in their class is doing their best. Also there are good clubs and helpful Exploratory class teachers. If you choose a school choose this one! I haven't seen 1 bully and don't plan to because this year in almost over!
