My son is in special education and will be entering 6th grade this next school year. I don't want him to go to Doolen middle school, we had alot of problems when my daughter went there and I don't believe it would be good for my son. I read very bad reveiws about Townsend which is the other middle school near us and the one that my sons school recommended he attend next year. What middle school in Tucson has a good special education program? What would be a good middle school for him to attend?

Hi uumamomma67,

I have a few suggestions. First contact the school district's special ed office. They can be of help.

If you haven't already, use the Find a School feature and read the parent reviews here: http://www.greatschools.org/find-schools/

Also talk to any support groups in your area that deal with the special education needs your son has.

Good luck.

Hello uumamomma67,

My Name is Rosa Mendoza and I am the School Liaison for Pima Partnesrship Academy and High School. I wanted to let you know about our smalll charter Middle School located at Stone and Drachman (Pima Partnership Academy). We have grades 6th thru 8th and we will have from 95 - 100 students enrolled by this fall. We also offer a full time Special Education teacher who will work with you and your son to meet his academic needs. In addition, we offer tutoring four days a week and Saturday school as well. We are small enough to know every child and their specific needs. We are fully accredited by North Central Association. We will be having our first Open House this Thursday, June 21st, 2012, from 5:30-7:30 pm and every Thursday evening till the end of July. Come by and we will give you and your son a tour and you can talk directly with our administrators and teachers to see if this school would be a good fit for you and your child. We have a lot to offer, I hope you will come by and check us out. I can be reached at 326-2528 x 2103 should you have any questions. Thank you for your time.

If you haven't already, contact Miles Exploratory Learning Center K-8, http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/miles/
I have heard nothing but absolutely great things about this school, particularly from parents of special education students. It's small and the middle school grades are even smaller, creating a close, tight-knit community of learners and their parents. Most of the classes have their own websites, so you can get a feel for each classroom and you can easily contact teachers via email. It has excellent support staff (several! not just one "special ed" teacher!), who will meet your child's educational needs professionally and consistently. Even though it's past the deadline to apply, call the district and see if you can get your child in. It really is worth it!

I'm curious where you ended up with your child for 6th grade? I was in that predicament 3 years ago and ended up at AmeriSchools. It has been life changing for my son. They are kind and respectful and he has grown in soooo many ways. I hope your son is doing well and flourishing wherever he is.
