School Official Point of View

Greetings Old High Middle School Community, Over the holiday season, I hope you found time to reflect, relax, and enjoy your family and friends. I cannot believe that the first semester is behind us. We have had a very busy first semester at Old High Middle School. In this space I would like to highlight a few of the activities taking place at OHMS. Learning MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Students took the MAPS assessment at the beginning of the school year. The teachers have shared this data with the students, and are using the information to plan their instruction. Students will take this assessment one more time this school year. We plan on giving this assessment in January. This assessment is important because it is a measure of a student s learning on the common core standards, and it will also be used to place students in accelerated classes like Pre-AP, which begin in 6th grade. The first set of MAPs data was sent home in Tuesday folders after the assessment. We will present the new MAPs data at your child s conference during the spring. We are extremely pleased with the progress that students have shown so far this year. The implementation of the Common Core State Standards and the teaching and learning strategies are clearly making an impact on your child s learning. We look forward to looking at the growth the students have made when the next set of assessments are complete. Positive Culture PTO: Our PTO has been working hard! We are appreciative of all of their efforts. The PTO from last year and this year have worked tirelessly to raise money for the second phase of the playground. The playground equipment should be installed the first few weeks of January, weather permitting. Our PTO President last year, Jen Beck, and our PTO President this year, Victoria Mizner, along with their executive boards, have led well. We are fortunate to have a healthy and active PTO. Homeroom Parents: Thank you to all of our Homeroom Parents who have invested in the classrooms. We had outstanding participation with the end of the year parties on Friday, December 19th. We know there are many parents who engaged the parties by sending items. And, thank you to Charice Curtis for leading. Knights Give Back: Our Knights Give Back Parents have invested in our students to ensure those who may go without during extended breaks, like Thanksgiving, are fed and receive nutrition. Through our school food drives and partnerships with Knights Give Back and local churches, we were able to provide groceries to 25 Old High families during the holiday season. We have a school partner who donates financially every month to our school. He has requested his name not be mentioned. However, he should be thanked for his investment in our students as well. Mr. Brunner and I were a part of the group who delivered food on Monday, December 29th. We observed first-hand how these deliveries positively impact our Knights. Mrs. Bishop and Mrs. Jefferson did a great job organizing! Clubs: The Giving Tree, Chess Club, The Library Club, FCA, Girls on the Run, The Knightly Gardeners, 6th Grade Technology Club, 5th Grade YESKIES, and the Knightly Reader Book Clubs, amongst others, will be going on during the 2nd semester. Please be sure to get involved and enjoy a club! Information about each club can be located on our school web-page. Our clubs take place before school or during the day. A sincere thank you to all of our teachers who lead these clubs and spend time preparing for the students. Awards/Report Cards Report Cards will be sent home in Tuesday folders on Tuesday, January 13th 5th Grade Awards Assembly will be Wednesday, January 21st at 9 a.m. 6th Grades Awards Assembly will be Wednesday, January 21st at 1 p.m. We are excited to celebrate our Knights in the following areas: All A s (both first and second semester), All A s and B s (both first and second semester), Certificate of Achievement, and the Principal s Award. Please visit our Old High Middle School website for all building information at oldhigh.bentonvillek12.org Finally, don t forget to follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/oldhighms to stay up to date with the latest news and information about the great things happening at Old High. We look forward to a great second semester! Jeff Wasem, Principal

OHMS is a wonderful, supportive school for all types of students. Everyone from the principal to the teachers to the front office staff cares about the kids. The school has many extra programs to engage the students, including book clubs, chess club, etc.

A few teachers might be happier in a religious school. Their views enter the classroom too often.

This school is amazing-the principal is awesome. She is very engaging with her students, and readily available to parents. Can't go wrong being a part of OHMS!

We recently moved to the area from out of state. I have a daughter that is in the Resource program and I cannot say enough about how great this school is. They have given her so much help and support and have turned her education around! The teacher's are always available, hard-working and love their students. This school has gone above-and-beyond in giving the best possible education to their students!
