Mayflower Middle School
Grateful to: School leader

This Principal lives and breathes his school. He participates and attends every activity and seems to spend 24/7 working to benefit the school and its students and his staff. He is the hero of every student who attends Mayflower Middle School and probably has no idea how many young lives he changes for the better.

Teacher effectiveness: Very effective

Most of the teachers are very effective and spend a lot of their time outside of class preparing ways to make a more effective learning experience for their students. They all spend a disproportionate amount out of pocket to enhance what the school provides for the classrooms because they are dedicated to their profession and their students.

Amount of homework: Not enough

This school is somewhat light in requiring work outside of the classroom. A middle school student should not be unreasonably burdened with heavy assignments every night, but there could be a better balance than in this school.

This school rewards and recognizes persistence and determination in its students. Achievements are rewarded, and those who are less equipped or have never been encouraged are given chances to succeed commensurate with their abilities. This is more than meaningless "participation awards" for just being there. It is a recognition of those who try, persist, and achieve to the extent of their abilities and beyond. Nothing nurtures success like success.

Respect is presented in a positive manner leading by example. Disrespect from students is pointed out in a non-shaming way which is a much better teaching tool and more likely to have a lasting effect.

Because the teachers and staff share qualities of compassion, caring, and empathy, the students are exposed to them daily. Positive role models positively impact students, and some of them remember these qualities and the rest of their lives as well as the educators who taught and lived these qualities.

It is difficult to instill these qualities in teens who have not been exposed to them at home or in previous learning environments. Mayflower Middle School has a Principal who has a natural knack for communicating with young people. He is lovingly firm, and the students understand that he wants wonderful things in life for them. There are posters everywhere, regular talks, and contests stressing development of positive attributes that include honesty, integrity, fairness, kindness, and tolerance among all students and staff.

The few teachers who keep the school from getting an overall five-star rating are still adequate to above average and outperform peers from other districts similarly situated. Most of the teachers are excellent, incredibly dedicated professionals, especially the ones in the lower middle grades. The Principal is A-1 and deals wonderfully with important issues: academic achievement, campus safety, individual attention to each and every student, encouraging good citizenship, non-bullying, respecting diversity, and social and activities inclusion of special needs students. The maintenance/janitorial employees are among the best you will find in any school. They go above and beyond their job requirements, know every student in the school by name and genuinely care about them. It shows. This school is in a low income area and does an excellent job within its limited resources. If it were better funded, there is no telling what it could achieve.

We found the teachers and the Principal to be very involved and willing to spend one on one time with both us and our student to head off any learning or discipline problems in advance. The teachers and principal attend all sporting and extra curricular events. I would highly recommend this school for anyone wanting a good education and experience for their child.
