The "No Child Left Behind" act is NOT working! So many of our children who learn differently are falling through the cracks! "All kids are being required to learn the same things at the same time in the same way. The requirements for each grade level are getting stricter and testing is being emphasized more and more. Because children learn differently and are at different developmental stages, "one-size-fits-all" education does not work. Kids feel more and more pressure from teachers and parents to learn material they are either not ready for or that is being taught in a way that is counter to their learning styles. Then they are tested on material they were not able to learn. These kids are being set up for failure.
WOW, first off i was a student at this school so you will get the truth. I will not put my name on here because by putting my name most of the staff would know who i am ad try to press charges. Speaking of pressing charges, i called my history teacher once and was told that if i do it again, that the school would back her up and press charges just because she didn't like me as it was at school so she wanted me gone from her life after school. That same monster reported me at school when i wrote 7 days til doomsday on a piece of paper when doomsday was my birthday. l and that lady that said we couldn't talk at recess was correct, if we got in trouble three times for it they would suspend us and treat us like inmates in SAC!
I've had two children attend Poplar Street (one last year, one this year) and I have been very happy with the education they are receiving. Yes, the building needs some major updating. My kids' teachers have been very professional and dedicated. The office staff has always been helpful. The nurse is very nice. The only people I have noticed being overly rude are the lunch room staff. I think it's ridiculous to not let the children talk at all during lunch. And only giving them 15 minutes to get their food and eat isn't realistic.
This school is horrible!!!! It should be shut down...there is no structure in the classroooms, the kids and parents are talked to disrespectfully and there is no help or support if you have a child who struggles academically. Do not torture your child in this school!!!
I must say that my son was so excited about being at this school. It didn't take long for that to change. Students are compared to each other by the teachers.(unprofessional) I believe teachers hold a grudge, as well as, the upper hand on students, which is a definite disadvantage.
I have been very impressed with Poplar Street School this year. I was worried at first, but after dropping by the school several times and seeing how disciplined the school is, I have decided I like it. Everyone is very helpful, and the teaching staff is good.
I really expected much more from this school. My son is constantly bullied, and gets in trouble when he is forced to defend himself. He was also forced to serve an extra day of SAC (detention) due to a clerical error. He is in honors classes, but refused to do any of his work for 2 weeks after this injustice. He just lost interest in even trying to please his teachers. Big surprise! He is doing better now, but got an F for turning in a project late, and he still cannot write a research paper himself!
