I am a parent whose children are enrolled at Hamilton Elementary in PUSD. We have chosen to send our kids to Eliot for middle school. The Arts Magnet structure has changed this school completely. I witnessed enthusiastic, focused students as well as incredibly impressive, dedicated and engaging teachers. The Science, Math and History teachers were outstanding, and the Arts teachers and staff were equally well credentialed and superb. The artists in residence are another part of Eliot's new equation for success. Each class has, on average, only 25 students. Quite spectacular at the middle school level! Eliot received an enormous grant to implement this new magnet structure. A Magnet Coordinator was hired to oversee this project. Equipment and facilities, arts-integration training for the teachers and staff, and an emphasis on long term educational changes for the school are apparent. The Great Schools rating/API score was determined prior to all of the magnet funds and educational changes. Because of a statewide switch to Common Core and a transition from testing for API scores, this 2 will be floating around but is not reflective of what I witnessed at this new Eliot.

Wow! I recently toured the school and was greatly impressed by the new model being implemented at the school. The teacher's and were knowledgeable and committed to integrating arts into the student curriculum. More importantly they an impressive understanding of the new Common Core standards, having being involved in the District planning for its implementation. The facilities and equipment were surprisingly good, with a lab full of new Macs, a video recording studio, ample studio space, and a beautifully renovated auditorium. The student body is very diverse, which is another great point for those looking for a stimulating and engaging environment for their kids. I'm looking forward to enrolling my kids there next year.

Eliot is now Eliot Arts Magnet thanks to a federal grant received in 2013. Since becoming a magnet school, Eliot continues to improve with new facilities (Mac lab, dance studio, video-recording studio) and professional partnerships with The Huntington, The Music Center, and more. Professional artists work with teachers to integrate arts across the curriculum and enhance students' experiences in arts electives. Eliot has turned around and is an awesome choice for an innovative middle school experience.

I've been on two tours of the new and improved Eliot Middle School this year with my 4th grade son and some of his friends and parents. They are in the 1st year of a new Visual and Performing Arts Magnet Program which promises to attract new families from around the district with its beautifully renovated campus, incredible new facilities, and passionate teachers. Very excited to see how the program grows by the time we are ready for middle school!

You will not find harder working, more dedicated or more talented staff anywhere. They are working uphill to secure the best for Altadena's kids. Support your teachers!!

This school is horrible. My daughter went there ithis year in the 6 grade she will not be returning. It is just like a school with no rules and no stucture. The teachers are just as bad as the students, my daughter learned nothing from this school. She will be attending Blair next year.

The new Principal and some change-over in staff has made Eliot the school to work at. Along with that, the caliber of student and parent that are enrolling, has made Eliot a stronger school academically and socially for years to come. Come join us. Go Public!

I think that some of these parents are way out of hand with there comments on Eliot. I attended Eliot not too long ago, I took honors classes and fortunately I had amazing teachers who taught me lifelong lessons along with everything else that they taught me. I will never forget Eliot or how it changed my life. I think that before you criticize the school, consult the child, see what he or she thinks of it. Oh, and by the way don't blame the school for your child's lack of interest in his or her school work, if somebody doesn't want to learn, nobody's going to push them into it.

I expected more out of this school. They let my stepdaughter fall thru the cracks. Teachers didn't contact the parents until it was too late for her to be helped.

I was very impressed with this school and the staff/teachers I encountered while my child was there. The school is old and needs some upkeep but the most important aspects of this school are the staff/teachers and the education they provide. My child learned a lot while he was there and the teachers he had for the most part were knowledgeable, great with the kids and some of them took their own time to participate in after school activities with the children that wanted to participate. IMO, this school has a lot to offer to those that are willing to look past the school appearance.

Eliot Middle School has a beautiful facade, but as soon as you walk through the doors you feel like you're in a warehouse. They take no pride in the up keep of their school. Most of the teachers try, but are arrogant and have stopped developing their curriculum. I think Eliot Middle School has the potential to be a wonderful school with more parental involvement, student accountability, and better use of funds spent.

I had a child graduate from Eliot last year, and I have to say I was less than impressed. There is little parent involvement and the kids are not getting the help that they need. Pasadena Unified as a whole has taken a downward spiral.

HONOR ROLL

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
