Atascadero High School is a very effective learning center. As a student, if you are willing to go to the extra mile (taking AP and Honors courses) you will find some of the best teachers in the county. If you are lazy, disrespectful, and honestly do not care about yourself and your future, you will have a difficult time. In all due respect, the education you get out of AHS depends on what you are willing to put into it. A person with a real work ethic will do very well here. As far as my experience, all of my teachers (whether coaches or not) have been amazing, willing to work with students to further their learning. I feel privileged to relieve such quality education. Also, there is a high expectation for students to participate in extracurriculars. As such, there are many elective choices available for such a small school.
I have four boys who attended AHS. The youngest is a senior this year. We have had a very positive experience. Both with teachers and coaches. You are gonna find a few teachers in any school that you disagree with or even dislike. However the majority of them do care about the kids and will go the extra mile with them. I am responding here though mostly because of what I read about the coaches... Our coaches are amazing! I probably won't be able to express enough the valuable lessons my kids gained from being a part of the team. My kids participated in Football, Track, Water Polo and Wrestling. Wrestling being their main sport. Those coaches have become friends because of the quality & quantity of time they spent with my kids. The positive influence has been invaluable. Joining a team is making a commitment. Counselor Rogers is also amazing!
Atascadero High is recognized for its extra curricular activities. Safety here is never a problem. Being a student myself i have never felt threatened. And most all of the students that don't like the teachers are disrespectful. i don't have one thing bad to say about AHS. iloveit!
My childs safety was not not met with satisfactory results so I pulled him from the school. Also the special ed programs do not give the children the skills to be independent adults. Schools response to be safer was add more video cameras. I personally will not recommend school
I like Atascadero High School because of the teachers, the classes offered, and the counselors on staff. *Most* teachers are friendly and dedicated to helping students succeed. Being a smaller school (in relation to SLO high.. etc), there are many elective choices at AHS. The guidance counselors are there for anyone and everyone who needs assistance regarding anything.
I was disappointed with my children's education at AHS. The total focus was on Athletics and Academics was secondary. In order to keep the 2 coaches for 3 football teams(Freshman,JV and Varsity),wrestling, baseball, etc...We had(have) coaches teaching Algebra, Science, Health. These coaches were in no way 'good teachers'. They may know the subjects but they did not 'teach' them well. It was obvious they were there primarily to coach the teams to victory and the quality of the students education was secondary.
