Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

A wonderful school with a deeply caring staff and parents involved at every level. BRSSD is a terrific district and has maintained its high quality education despite CA's budget challenges and unprecedented growth in student enrollment. Central is the crown jewel in a set of top notch elementary schools: the curriculum, community, and leadership at the school are all outstanding. Great teachers who are well-supported are the foundation here, but the school is wonderful across the board.

We love this school and the community. There is a very wonderful community of parents who are committed to creating a safe, nurturing, challenging environment for their children. The education is a lovely combination of whole child (with music, dance, and art) and a great academic preparation. The community has really rallied to keep the school top notch through these very challenging economic times from donating money to volunteering time. We are extremely grateful that are children are a part of this school and community.

As with all organizations, the leader sets the tone and Mrs. McKenzie has certainly cultivated a kind, respectful environment which empowers students, teachers and parents. A gracious, professional leader who remains engaged, involved, accountable and responsive to the needs of the student community and individual students, she has the respect of the teachers who follow her lead in delivering the best education to K-5 students. My boys have thrived there these past 3 and 2 years, respectively. Central is a very special community and we're blessed to be a part of it.

Caring principal, teachers & staff. They really focus all their efforts on what the students really need. They stay late to help and go the extra mile. Even with all the budget cuts, they stay positive and make the best of the situation.

The teachers go the extra mile not only in ensuring kids are learning but that they develop good social skills and habits that are crucial for their development. The parents are also very involved in the classroom and the turnout for informational and fund raising meetings is amazing.

I disagree with the last post. The principal, Cori McKenzie, is not 'so-so', she is fabulous. She met with us at pre-K orientation, and immediately impressed us with her caring, knowledgeable, and professional attitude. She has been with us every step of the way (they're now in 3rd & 5th), leading the school through a tough budget environment to win a National Blue Ribbon award, celebrating each member of the school community's achievements and participating in every event we've attended as parents (even sparsely attended 'better parenting classes'). I think her fair, thoughtful leadership has been excellent.

Teachers are great with a few exceptions, like any other school. Principal is 'so-so.' The PTA is wonderful. So overall it is an average school.

Responding to the parent comment about don't believe the hype. Everyone thinks their kids are the smartest on the planet. It is arrogant to think yours are something academically special. This school is top notch and if the teachers know your kids to be average then believe them and get over yourself.

Our family transfered to Central. We have truly found a home! When I asked my 2 boys if they liked their school, my 2nd grader told me he wanted to go to Central forever! My boys have been nurtured as well as challenged. The parent involvement is unbelievable. It is so cool to be able to see our kids grow and learn and the Central staff wants us as parents to be a part of that. I am always amazed to see the principle knows every child by name! My boys are both testing at the advanced level! The other factor in the Central scene is the community spirit taught to the kids. They are taught to respect one another as well as themselves. What more could you ask for in a school?

I am proud to say that both of my children attend this remarkable school. The principle, teachers, and staff are all nurturing and caring-modeling the expectation of their students and parents. The parents at Central are hardworking and caring with the constant force to making our school a great place to be. PTA and School-Force (Ed Foundation) help to round out the education at the school by providing additonal educational and enrichment programs (art, dance, reading specialists, libraries, science, music, etc.). I am proud to be a parent at this wonderful school!

When we moved to Belmont four years ago, we told our agent that we were only interested in Peninsula neighborhoods with outstanding schools - a top-notch public school was (and continues to be) our number one priority. While we knew Central had high test scores, we did not realize how outstanding it was on every level - from the principal, to the teachers to the enriched curriculum and dedicated parent community. Central is providing our children with far more than a strong academic foundation - the school is providing them with a stimulating, safe, healthy and warm community to learn and grow in.

My family loves Central School! Our neigborhood school not only has great academics (excellent test scores), but also sets the bar high in teaching social skills, common courtesy and even environmental awareness. The school has scores of wonderful parent volunteers, a caring Principal and a very professional staff who really seem to enjoy working together.

Central has been our school for five years. I have one child who is above grade level and one who now is at grade level but needed additional help for three years to get to this point (mostly in reading). With both children, I have witnessed teachers working to challenge each child s strengths and weaknesses while focusing on the development of the whole child. With my child who had learning difficulties, we were provided feedback regularly and he was assisted through the many wonderful specialists that are on site. The parent community is wonderfully supportive and very involved. The parents are active not only at this school site but are the leaders for much of the district (via School-Force, the education foundation). The PTA provides many outlets for families to gather and get to know one another fostering the principal s vision small community based school with parents and kids who care.

Central is a wonderful, small neighborhood school with an amazing principal. Responsible citizenship is a high priority at this school and along with the wonderful teachers makes for a high scoring, as well as exceptionally well-mannered student body. As with all public schools, Central struggles to maintain and expand its programs due to state and federal funding shortfalls. However with very high parent participation, the PTA and the district's education foundation, School-Force, Central provides wonderful programs including art, dance, and music, as well as numerous social events for the whole family that create an uplifting sense of community that is too often missing in this day and age. My children and I love Central.

I'm not sure why the buzz is so high about this school, maybe it's about teacher's other than the ones my kids have had. Both of my kids are above grade level in many areas yet their teachers do very little to accommodate them and other high achieving students. Although we continue to ask for a supplemental experience, my husband and I keep hearing, 'this has to be done at home.' I have heard the same frustrations from other parents. Many of the surrounding districts let their high achieving students move into higher classes for both math and reading, yet Central Elementary refuses. It's a shame because otherwise it seems to be a good school. If your kids are advanced, I would consider another option. Don't believe the hype.

I have two daughters in this school, in 2nd and K. The teachers are incredible, parent involvement is very high. The principal is very well respected by teachers and parents. Recent blue ribbon winner, CAL distinguished school. This school is in my opinion, in the best of the best of public schools on the penninsula....and when compared to private schools this school fares as well as private schools in the area.

My son has been going to KG and 1st grade and simply loves it, and so do we. It is about as innovative as a public school is allowed to be with strong and gentle leadership. Academics are strong in 1st grade, maybe too strong for my taste but my son seems to love it. He prefers school over vacation... Lots of fun activities for kids like kiddie valet (5th graders help kids out of the car, curbside), camp-read-a-lot (reading in tents on the school lawn for a morning), and discovery day, spring sing I do think there is very limited PE, that's really the only draw-back. Lots of art in KG, but less so in 1st grade. Active PTA.

Central Elementary provides a nurturing, safe, standards-based small school environment for children. The well-liked principal has a clear vision for the school and the enthusiasm and involvement of the parents and teachers is very high. The PTA funds a large number of high quality programs, field trips, assemblies, enrichment days, etc. The districtwide educational foundation plus a parcel tax funds music, science, libraries, literacy and writing programs. Class sizes are small (20)in K-3 then go up to a max of 30 for the 4th and 5th grades. The school recently scored 901 on the California API test which is considered a very high score...a reflection on the quality of the leadership, educators and parents of this school. Areas for improvement include a foreign language program and a program for high achieving students.

Parent involvement and exceptional teachers is what make central such a fantastic learning enviroment. My children seem to be thriving here. It is dieconcerting that the state has forced the schools to drop key programs such as librarians and foreign language for the younger children, but our fantastic pta has done a great job funding these and other programs.

Central is a wonderful elementary school. The Principal is dynamic and very kind; a great example to the rest of the staff, the children and their families too! Most teachers are excellent; a few are just good. The children are fairly diverse, wholesome and happy. The level of parental involvement is phenomenal. Quite literally, certain classes in the earlier grades have regular volunteer assistance from the parents of every child in the class. It's not unusual to have four parents helping in the classroom at once! The PTA is strong and involved and helps provide much-needed funding and other resources. There is a tutoring program to provide additional help to children who need it. Supplemental funding from the successful passage of Measure G (local parcel tax) and the 'School Force' program ensure the continuation of music and science in fourth and fifth grades, and the excellent library remains open.
