There is no Spanish immersion here. They give some of the gifted students a month on a Rosetta stone program, maybe that's what they're talking about? If your kid doesn't speak Spanish, they'll probably be excluded on the playground. They have a lot of bullying, and a lot goes 'on' on the playground that the monitors don't see. They stand in the shade, they don't monitor at all. Everyone that can afford to takes their kid out of this school. There's a reason it rates 3 out of ten, it's awful.

My family now has 4 generations who have attended this school so it has a very special place in my heart. I also had the privilege of working there for several years. This school has always had a 'we are family' feel to it while also providing a great education to our children through a wonderful staff who cares.

I attended this school as a child- It was such a wonderful experience for me being a student there! AVES does an amazing job helping the many Spanish speaking students learn English and overcome the many hurdles that they face by having English as their second language instead of first. The employees love working with the kids and are so dedicated to educating all the children. Truly a wonderful school!

I attended this school when I was a child, and now that my own children are students here I can see the care, dedication and effort that I had felt put forth by my teachers from an adult perspective. The staff is open and committed to working with parents to bring out the best in every child.

Our school might not look like much from the outside, but it is what is on the inside that matters most. We haven't had the means to fix many of the structural problems of our 30 plus year old facility --let alone dare to dream of modernizing. We are a small, rural, public school in a lower income area. Our teachers and staff never let the lack of resources stop them from providing the best education possible. Facing large educational budget cuts, our teachers voted to take a voluntary cut in pay in order to save the jobs of their fellow teachers whose positions would otherwise be eliminated. These amazing teachers will stop at nothing. They provide school supplies for those who can't afford them, healthy daily snacks to stress the importance of good nutrition, books for those who don't have books at home, extra tutoring for those with special needs...and lots and lots of love. Or principal never sleeps. She knows every child, every family and every situation. She never misses a spelling bee, soccer game or PTA meeting. On top of running the entire school...she also teachers special classes in each grade. She is hands on and heart in. We love our little school....I know you would too.

Parent involvement
  • Parents participate in class, in our ptav (parents and teachers of anderson valley), in our school site council, and on the district english language advisory council. in addition our parents attend our semi-annual parent/teacher/student conferences. we have parents and community members read in the breakfast club -a before-school story time, as well as helping us with our garden, vermiculture and after school art activities. some parents meet their children on tuesday afternoons (our early release day) to read in the library and watch their children take the accelerated reader quizzes on the computer to see how well the students understood the story.
