We are moving to Camarillo in 2013. My husband attended this Elementary school and has fond memories. When I called for information regarding my first grader and if there was a pre-school program for my twins the staff was extremely helpful. Although there is no program for my twins they offered me phone numbers and suggestions that were much needed. I can't wait to enroll my daughter for second grade and twins for Kindergarten in the fall of 2013.
My daughter has had a very good experience at Camarillo Heights. It is a wonderful neighborhood school with a family feeling. New principal seems very involved and I look forward to great things from her! I've looked into other schools and really see Camarillo Heights as offering everything a child needs to succeed. With less students!!!! Way more teacher attention and that is always the best.
My son went to this school from K-part of 3rd grade. The school was very active in his educational needs. In first grade he was diagnosed with ADHD and his teacher Mrs. Friday was so fantastic and patient with us and our hesitation about putting him on medicine. His resource teacher was wonderful with helping us get him caught up in his studies and keeping us all on task! The princepal Dr. Eidmann is one of the most amazing women I have met. Not only was she personnally envolved with my son's education she was also supportive in our decisions as parents. We will miss this school when we leave!
I attended summer school here in 1960 and my Grandkids are currently here in second grade and kindergarden.
As I think is true with all schools, education depends greatly on the teacher. In our case, we've had some good years and some not-so-good years. As a working parent, it's hard to be an involved parent when PTO meetings all happen in the morning. School newsletters were put on-line, then never updated, so communication isn't always the best unless you have a proactive teacher. Overall a 'good' school, but has some areas that could be improved.
There is a lot of parent involvement in this school. This year I am not very happy with the teacher, but in the last three years have been satisfied with the teachers. Every day, it seems, there is a new rule regarding what kids can and cannot do on the playground. Recess is the time for kids to play, but when there are so many rules, the actual kind of play the kids can do is very limited. My daughter got her swingset rights revoked for an entire day because she was facing the 'wrong way' on the swing. Come on! My daughter asked if we can go to Staples and buy paper for her classroom because the teacher says there is no money to buy it. I know this problem isn't limited to this school, but it's sad for all.
Both my children have attended this school for the last two years. The last principal was bad, but is now gone. The teachers, however, are excellent...caring, competent and yes, underpaid, as are all teachers in this District. I'm at a loss for why another Rater said you'd get a good education here if you 'had money' or 'volunteered'. Huh? How can that impact the education your child, one- of twenty in a class, gets? Anyway, this school has great parent involvement, lots of great activities, like the annual 5th grade/1st grade hoedown. My boy loved it! There is alot of older child mentoring of younger children. It makes the older kids act better because they are looked up to, and the younger children want to act better so the older kids think they're cool. Lots to love at this school.
The '07-'08 school year is the second year my children have attended this school. I am truly disappointed in this school. Last year wasn't all that great, however, the school sank quickly under the 'leadership' of the new principal Robert Bassett. The man is incompetant, disrespectful, and unprofessional. Thank goodness he won't be returning next year. The school teaches to the test just to get a high rating and some of the teachers are truly lousy, probably due to the fact they are the lowest paid in the county. If you have money and/or tons of time to volunteer, your kids will do just great at this school. I moved to the area just to have my children attend this school and regret it now.
I have been at Camarillo Heights for six years now with three children. I absolutely love it. The teachers have been wonderful. One fifth grade teacher provides extra sports activities all year long during lunch. This has been a great experience for all my kids. I will be so sad if it is closed.
