I currently attend CVHS and I find it to be annoying at times, but then again I love it at other times. The school has gone steadily downhill since letting transfers from 'stressed' school districts in (like hayward and san leandro). It is increasingly overcrowded (almost 3,000 students) and most classes have about 35 students in them. It's very hard to be recognized for anything and there's a ton of competition between students, as well as tons of students who don't give a care about anything. There are a few exceptionally amazing staff members, but on the contrary there are a lot of teachers who have no business being teachers. It's incredibly disappointing. I think the CVHS experience has a lot to do with luck of who you get for a teacher and how dedicated you are, because if you're not dedicated, you won't get any push from staff.
I would agree with the previous posting. This school is really hard. There is alot of work. The teachers are very high expectations, but I don't think its because they want to be mean. I think they want to prepare our kids for college and the real world.
I really dont like this school... there is way to much work... And the teachers dont answer your questions... I went you LynBrooks High School.. But then moved this school makes no sence.
I am very proud of Castro Valley High. The academics at this school is superb. They have recently started an Academy program that helps stimulate interest in specific areas of study. It helps the students think about their future and gives them some purpose. Many of the teachers are the cream of the crop. Many of them come from some of the best colleges across the country and I am truly proud of the work they do. The only thing I can only complain about is that some of the kids seem quite entitled, but other than that I plan on sending my kids here when they are old enough.
Castro Valley High has just recently become involved in the TriValley Teacher Induction Project. This school takes education extremely seriously. Their teachers are at the top of their fields. Despite the fact that this school has thousands of students, the teachers do their best to make it feel like a small community with all the extracurricular activities and academics. I'm very excited to see what this school year will bring to CVHS.
Castro Valley High has become the worst school! My son just graduated and it was a rought 4 years. No teacher communication made it a horrible 4 years! The counselors are over worked, there are too many students, & teacher turnover increases each year. The quality of eduation is poor and my son actually had coloring assignments for homework in his senior year! Not one term paper was required. If you're raising a smart, wordly, intelligent child, try Piedmont or Pleasanton!
The down slide has begun at CVHS. Not only is the administration unfocused - 2 principals in less than 6 months-, allowing inter-district transfers has created an atmosphere of disrespect and hostility between the students, and the teachers as well. The level of parent participation has deteriorated. This is unfortunate, as studies have proven that parent participation equates to a higher level of student success. The teachers seem less inclined to really help the students. I had my son take around a Weekly Progress Report at my request, and was stunned by how few filled it out and the rest of them ignored my request. Extremely disappointing, but no other choice is available.
Five years ago CV High was a great school but has gone down hill significantly since then! There are way too many students therefore the teachers are spending too much time trying to 'manage' the class instead of teaching. I have experienced many challenges with administrative errors, non-responsive teachers, counselors and principals and what seems to be an excessive number of extreme behavioral/disruptions throughout the school year. I have no choice but to send my third child to CV High in the fall of 07 as there are no other options other than private school which I can't afford, and I can tell you that I am not feeling good about the next four years of my sons education at CV High School.
CVHS has a great american Sign Laungage course and is a great school all around thank god for their asl program or my son wouldnt be able to take the courses until after high school
Cvhs is heading in the wrong direction thanks to the principle bringing in students out of district in an already overcrowded school. She keeps the doors open for out of district kids. I will not vote for any additional school bonds! Thank god this is my son's last year as in 5 years cvhs will be just like san leandro and hayward. Thank you ms. Coco
The high school is great with its kids. Its teachers teach in the area they majored in. Which is a plus considering alot of teachers are teaching kids in areas they have no skill in.
Good college prep program. Real problem with the principal at this time.
Many activities afterschool, free afterschool math tutoring program, nice enviroment, teachers are helpful.
Generally a good program, but we have concerns about the overall strength of it's offerings when compared to top schools around the Bay area and the U.S. The new administration does not seem as focused on the individual needs of the student as on achieving a uniform and stablized program - but this is likely the reality for most schools that operate within a defective district structure.
Very good school. I love the new renovations and the additions to the buildings. The Castro Valley School District is the best compared the the neighboring towns. A slight problem with racism and racial separation, but that's what comes with living in a small town like Castro Valley. Many parents are trying to transfer their kids into the school because of the poor public high schools in their district.
Some good teachers, some average, and some who should'nt be in the field. Need more classes that deal with real life and help with real jobs! Money management for example.
Wonderful school! i participate in so many activities- its a little racist but not really... Wonderful teachers.. But the math department isn't all that wonderful, sadly.
I have been very pleased with most of the academic instruction my eleventh grader has received at CVHS. The recent racial incidents have dampened my spirit towards the school. There is a select few who have been intolerant of the African American and Asian student population and have voiced their disrespect in the school newspaper and through various 'hate' incidents. In spite it all, CVHS continues to be a good placed for a high school education, a wide variety of courses are offered and there are many extra curricular activities. The teaching staff is not ethnically diverse and could improve in that area.
CVHS changed my life for the better. The teachers and staff there care so much. The Special Ed staff has made the biggest difference in my life and I wouldn't be the person I am today without them. Thank you CVHS for saving my life.
