As a new parent to school.. having entering twin kindergarteners... I can't compare.. but I can tell you that I'm so impressed with the amount of attention and dedication this school has in education, service, and character. Many of my friends are unhappy with their chosen schools and I wish they all could be at ours. They think outside the box. Critical thinking is taught and the students are big participants as to how things are done. They vote, their voice is heard. I'm in the classroom daily and it's encouraged. It's a thriving school with dedicated parents and teachers, all just grateful to be there! I feel privileged to send my children there. knowing too that they are in good hands, prepared for life and learning!!!
OCS is a high quality K-8 charter school full of teachers, staff, and parents who are very passionate and care deeply about well balanced education. The philosophy is special and respectful and the children thrive in classrooms that aren't overcrowded and are not overloaded with homework. The students also get music, art, garden, and lots of pe, which is so rare these days in LAUSD.
We moved our 2nd grader from our assigned elementary school to Our Community Charter School and we couldn't be happier! This is what an elementary school should be! The principal and teachers are very caring. They encourage the parents to be involved. Our child loves going to school now and is flourishing!
Just love this school .... my kids are happy here! They look forward to going to school . They are encouraged to be independent thinkers as well as part of a community.
Great school for my kids who loves to go to school everyday! I know they are in a fun, loving and caring environment.
A hidden gem in the valley. Our child made many lasting friendships, and the teachers and staff give their all to this school. I don't think you'll find a warmer, more welcoming place in the whole valley. The best thing we found was 'responsive classrooms', which helps the children learn how to work together as a team and work out their issues with each other and the teacher. Music is once a week, K-4 does Kodaly with House of Blues donated percussion. We wished there was an art teacher, but this is the new reality of public education. The class size is small, at 23 students, for a public school. Classes all have aides, too. Some aides are fully credentialed. This school struggles like all schools do from lack of funding, but the parents, administrators and teachers, and friends of the school work hard to make it a place where any child from any background can receive an education. Funding for professional development would be a big help, but thanks to our government, those funds are few and far between.
Our Community School is a place where children come first. Learning is whole child, integrated, loving and respectful.
Wonderful school with caring teachers and staff. They emphasize communication skills and manners and let them be thinkers. I really like the responsive classroom approach . They also use singapore math and expose the children to music (they have a music room), gardening and PE (7th graders have PE everyday). The school is WASC Accredited, won charter of the year in 2009 and has an API score of 852!
I absolutely love this school! They take great care in ensuring that the students learn to be compassionate and caring. The music program is also wonderful.
From the time we visited OCS, we fell in love with the way each class was structured. Children are so engaged and teachers facilitate the learning process seamlessly. The principal is tied so closely to the curriculum and can explain the methods chosen for each grade level per subject. The administration utilizes best practices in education and implement readily what is best for the children. It is still a new school (6th year) and has already gained WASC accreditation earlier this year (highly uncommon for a public school), alloted a permanent site for the soon to be k-8 program, and received numerous grants as a result of exemplary strides made in the last few years. OCS represents the diversity of LA and is an inclusive environment designed to celebrate our differences and not tear us apart.
We switched from a Waldorf school to this school and were so thrilled to discover a terrific educational experience. This school has great teachers, staff and parent community. It feels like a private school because of the intimate community and attentive faculty. The school's philosophy supports a low-stress but challenging, fun, and very nurturing education
Our grandchildren go to this school and they love it. It's a school where children are treated as individuals and their strengths are appreciated.
This is a place where - from the teacher point of view - we are able to approach each student according to their needs. We have the freedom to use projects through which to teach standards and allow the students to build their communication skills through group work. As teachers our voices truly matter and our opinions are genuinely asked for to address school policy.
OCS respects their students, parents and teachers, and is an amazing school! I feel so lucky that my kids are able to have this kind of educational experience where they are treated as individuals and their individuality is recognized and honored! We are so grateful to be a part of OCS!
We have been privileged and blessed to call OCS our school! Each of my children has grown tremendously since starting here. The staff and teachers work hard to make our school a safe and fun learning environment. And, I have never seen a more dedicated group of parents than the ones we have here at OCS! Every child is honored at OCS!!!
This school focuses on children as individuals, recognizing that each student has a unique personality, and they try their best to cater to that. Family involvement in fundamental, and everyone is part of the larger school family.
OCS is truly a very special place. The name couldn't be more appropriate because the community of families and teachers and staff is amazing, we really feel like part of a big family. My son is seen in his entirety, not just a little cookie cutter kid...he is nurtured and guided and appreciated for all of his qualities and we have his wonderful teacher to thank. Thriving and growing and overall LOVING his learning and that is what i ask of a school, love him, accept him and help him to know that learning is fun and respect his fellow man and THAT is what he is learning here. We all benefit from the amazing people who are part of this very special place!
I just love this school. This is my child's first year at OCS and she has already thanked me a hundred times that we chose OCS for her school. The teachers are very professional and doing a super job! Promotes creative thinking in a child and works towards student's goal, provides all round development. Wonderful and well planned events and activities throughout the year. Staff is very friendly and always ready to listen and help. OCS has a safe environment. OCS gives us all a great feeling of community!
