Horrible school! Mrs. Nakamora is by far the worst principal ever. There is a huge bullying issue that never gets taken care of. The staff act like everything is a popularity contest. The sports programs are run by incompetent "coaches" and that's only half of the problem. They do not enforce a dress code, therefore you will see little girls with short shorts and inappropriate shirts. Definitely not a school to send your kids to.
I left one the most well-respected elementary schools in Mission Hills and brought my daughter here. Her former school did nothing but pile on homework from the first day of kindergarten. Half the kids in her 1st grade class were in tutoring to keep up. I was told over and over to hold my child back and when I asked for support and help from the teachers to get her on track, I received none. At Casilla's, they have gone out of their way to be supportive of mine and my daughters needs. They have an exceptional way of teaching and guiding the parents. It's a tight community with a lot of parental support. I'm very glad, as is my daughter, we made the switch!
Principal leadership has gone down. Office staff is not very friendly. Teachers are awesome I just think they get the support. So sad for at one point this was one of the best schools in the area.
I live in the same neighborhood abut a block away from the school and would like to complain about the noise from the loudspeakers, announcements and music are TOO LOUD!!!! If those kids have not suffered hearing loss from the loudspeakers, they surely will, as a neighbor I have to tell you it is very anoyng, please turn the speakers down!!!
I am very frustrated with this school, the teachers and especially the principal who seems to have his focus on everything but education. The school is all about adequacy, making sure the highest number of kids pass the minimum required standards. Teachers don t stray from the EXACT same lesson plans they've used year over year project/event flyers sent home are often incorrect because they neglect to review and change the dates from the dates for the prior school year - the ultimate in lazy teaching. The principal obviously has aspirations above his current position as he has latched on to a "platform" of healthy snacks in schools and has made that his singular focus. I don't even recall the last time he had a communication about actually providing educational challenge to his students. High achievers have met minimum standards, in the schools eyes they don t seem to be worth focusing on. Your child is bored with the constant repetitive review of the same topic over and over - too bad, they will not make efforts to challenge them, that is simply not the way the grade's "teaching team" works (i.e. - we don't have a worksheet for that that we can photocopy....)
As a parent of third grade student we are excited about the progress and growth our son has made. The school provides a balance of academics, social, and emotional growth. The Principal, Mr. Merlin is a kind and warm hearted person. The community is involved and celebrates studentssuccess.
Outstanding teachers and very involved parents. Our son went Kindergarten through Sixth Grade and every teacher was a winner.
We love the FANTASTIC TEACHERS! the GREAT STAFF! and the WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS AND PARENTS!
the teachers are awesome, they have on-site before and after school care and even though it's a k-6 school, it really feel like a small private school!
It is an honor to be parents of a child attending the 4th grade at Casillas (Joseph) Elementary School. Casillas is a school that holds its children responsible for learning by doing the best that they can do. It is a school that embraces and respects the needs, the desires, the dreams and the ambitions of each child. Parent participation and involvement inspires others to join in. Teachers are approachable, caring, knowing, and seem to love thier jobs. School starts sharp a 7:45. At 8:00 am the school gates are locked, campus is very quiet with the children already at task, learning. Can't say enough of how blessed we have been to be able to have our child attend this FANTASTIC, GREAT, WONDERFUL school.
My son is entering Kinder this year and I'm looking forward to a great experience for us. I have an older son who attended Casillas and I know first hand what a great principal we have. Mr. Damico is very approachable and genuinely concerned for students, parents, staff and the direction of the school. We are lucky to have him and the teachers that are there.
We love Casillas! The Principal, Mr. Damico, is wonderful! He is so approachable and makes you and your children feel important. He listens and handles any issues you may have. My son was in Kindergarten in 2006-2007 and did great! Loved the teacher and we can't believe how much he has learned in a year! We are looking forward to 1st grade!
Both of my children attend/attended Casillas. My son is now in high school and brings home A's and B's and my daughter is in 6th grade and brings home mostly A's. I credit Casillas for their curriculum and great teachers. The principal, Mr. Damico, is another great asset to this school. He is always approachable and willing to talk. Joseph Casillas Elementary is a great school by far!
Casillas is known as a language arts/writing school. Many schools in the district use our school as a model for implementing L.A. curriculum. We have many strengths, though. We have a dedicated staff and an incredible, new principal. We do not have a big turnover of staff at our school . There was a period of time several years back when there was a great turnover but most of the teachers( I know) at the school have been there at least five years. We are PTA and we are a very, strong PTA with great parent involvement! Parental support and involvement is another reason why Casillas is a great school!
This is a demonstration school and many other schools and districts look to this school as a model. They have a good mix of experienced and new teachers. They have a new principal and the kids are learning very well, as they have with the other one, who was so good, he went on to be an administrator for the district.
This is a wonderful school with a very dedicated staff. My husband and I have been impressed with the curriculum and quality of teachers since our children attended kindergarten. The teachers work hard and at what they do and create a classroom atmosphere which is both challenging and fun. Parent involvement is great with the success of school events like the 'Fall Festival', 'Mulit-Cultural Day' etc... In addition, the new prinicpal has made the transition very easy and has already established a quality of leadership that we can depend on.
My 5 year old daughter just started Kindergarten last year at Casillas and she loves it. Her teacher is great and she is excited to go to school every morning. She is learning new and exciting things everyday and can't wait to tell me about all about them. I found that the parent involement in this school is fantasic as they really encourage us to get involed as much as possible.
Casillas is a good school and many of the teachers are dedicated to educating children. Their winter carnival is fun and gets lots of parents involved, so is the talent show. There seems to be a lot of teacher turnover, however. My son really enjoys the PE classes and the DASH program is wonderful. There's a strong and active PTO at this school, which helps a lot, but more of the ELD population needs to be involved in school-wide decisions. GATE could be improved.
