Moved to the area this summer. (Navy family). Admin/office at CMS are nice. School has very little offered outside of the 3 Rs. Researched from Oct-May before deciding where to live based on schools and commute. We got the commute right. Just look at CUSD website for current financial crisis and check for those electives too. They only have Art and Spanish to offer new students, maybe avail spot in band and drama. The high interest electives, technology or broadcast, were closed. Missing many others in-demand newer electives, Robitics and Engineering. Clubs listed never started ( Science, Creative Writing, Chess, Art, History) We wanted those. Fund cuts for past several years pushed sports outside to "islander sports", nonprofit, but canceled fall baseball. Local kids (in gen) are not nice, friendly, or helpful. If you here "some kids buy lunches for friends and how sweet is that?", it is more likely they are trying to buy a nicer relationship. I wish we found what we read but not the case. 3 stars bc the cafeteria is great, some teachers and librarian are great, but others are below ave(from our experience). If I was told the truth, I could have made better choices for my family.
Coronado middle is a great school. They have excellent teachers and a great staff. I was new to the school and they made me feel very welcome. They have an excellent selection of electives. And their performing arts program is phenomenal. They also have an awesome cafeteria. :)
Fantastice school! We have two that have moved up to HS and two in the middle school. The teachers are really great withthe classes not being too large. The school administration are wonderful caring people who take an intereest in the children and really try to make the kids be accountable. the Vice Principle, Miss Melina, is especially talented withthe kids! She has a loving but firm apprpaoch and dosen't tolerate disrespect or inappropriate behavior. Acedemics are good, although I get frustrated with the various "on-line" approached to see how the kids are doing....find one and have all the teachers use the same system ( I believe that this coming year they are doing that)! I feel like we are getting close to a private education in a public school!
I love the middle school. I have a daughter who comes from a christian private school background. She spent one year at village, the elementary school, and while for her (she is gifted) it worked, it did not work as well for my 3rd grader. Anyhow, she was terrified to attend middle school and has LOVED everyday she has been there. The administration makes it fun (music sometimes at lunch?? they didn't do that while I was in school), and the teachers get the kids excited to learn. A+ Coronado Middle
It is a special part of our community and gets excellent scholastic ratings.
I love this school! I am in seventh grade and have to move this year, but I really don't want to leave. Its got great electives and a awesome technology program, including its own 'news' broadcast and laptop program. It rocks and your child will love it!
Very organized administration. Some excellent teachers. Wonderful facilites. Math program seems to need improvement. Maybe teachers need tadditional raining on how to teach algebra.
I love Coronado Middle School! Everyone is so involved and the teachers are great. We even just got a new pool so its nice to workout in a cool pool on a hot day.
I like the focus placed on character education and the facilities are excellent. However, academic standards can be inconsistent. Some teachers have established a superior learning environment but the quality of instruction can vary significantly from classroom to classroom. Hopefully, the new administrators will promote a faculty-wide culture of excellence.
This is my son's second yr. I have met the Principal, Vice Principal. the school Counselor, Nurse and most of the office staff. They are very student oriented and are very willing to go the extra mile. I stay in touch with his teachers and I'm always impressed with their enthusiasm about the kid's success. The facilities are outstanding. Where else can you find such technology in a middle school and a laptop program as well? My son is very content and is looking forward to being an 8th grader here.
Great school. This is our second year here. Some class sizes are a little too large, and school is overly oriented on finances rather than education (i.e. lost money from state when kids are absent.) District is in financial crisis, having to cut $880,000 over the next two years. Community is family oriented. Overall it is a nice place to live and send your kids to school.
My opinion of this school is as follows: Starting a music program not one previously in place. Meeting the needs of Military dependents does not seem to be the schools #1 priorty - even if the child has a 504 plan.
This School has great Features. My daughter loves it here and I am glad that I sent her here. I love the programs they do and just basically think that this school is great.
