Best teachers ever! The drama department is the main reason my kid is excited for school everyday. Nice to see a school focused on more than just sports.

The Community Advisory Council (CAC) Festival of Arts held at Royal Oak Middle School on Monday, March 14, 2016 was a great success attended by 47 schools and over 600 students with disabilities from across the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)! One of the biggest hits of the Festival of Arts was the face painting booth. Other booths and tables featured hands-on art activity stations that included making beaded bracelets, painting, coloring and more. There were also physical activity areas with adapted bowling and other sports events. Each station allowed students to participate in various ways that utilized multiple motor coordination skills. Student artwork was submitted prior to the event and was on display for all to see. The talent was impressive and the varied themes were related to the Common Core State Standards in art, science, history and other curriculum areas. The support provided by Charter Oak High School's Associated Student Body (ASB) at each activity station was invaluable and much appreciated. It was clear to see that the high school volunteers were making "best buddies" with all of the student participants and the mentorship and smiles all around were priceless.  This was COUSD's first time hosting the Festival of Arts and Joe Mitchell, Director of Student Services, did an amazing job planning and overseeing the event in collaboration with his colleagues and parent volunteers from the SELPA and its Community Advisory Council. Many thanks are also due to Maria Thompson, Principal of Royal Oak Middle School, as well as her administrative and facilities staff for volunteering the school to host this successful event.

On February 2, 2016, three Royal Oak Middle School students received certificates and scholarship awards for winning entries in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest of 2015-2016. The contest is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary West Covina Post 8620. Ms. Penny Butcher and Ms. Maureen Funaro presented the awards. These students competed against other middle school students from public and private schools in the surrounding areas. The theme of the essay contest was "What Freedom Means to Me." Congratulations to these students and all who participated!

ROMS Drama finally got the fantastic news about the 2nd national competition that The Drowsy Chaperone was entered in. The American Prize evaluates community, university, and high school level performance groups in several arts areas. Mrs. Pedroche felt so sure that her cast of The Drowsy Chaperone could stand up to the competition that she entered her Jr. High production in the contest. The judges were incredibly impressed with the quality and talent of the production. Though first place went to a University program, and second went to a high school pay-to-perform troupe, ROMS Drama received a special judges award and third place (beating out performing arts high schools)!

Mr. Henderson has been an amazing history teacher for my son. He has learned so much, and has more of an appreciation for different cultures regarding religious customs, foods, and respecting these customs that we aren't used to, and perhaps don't always understand. He feels it's one of the most interesting classes he's ever been a part of. He's excited to learn, and enjoys Mr. Henderson's energetic teaching style.

Former Thespian Vice president, Christie Carino, and incoming President Julien Mireles spoke to the board about the several accomplishments the ROMS Thespian Club and Drama Department had during the 2014-2015 year. The highlights include:  ·Hosting 1500 students from 50 schools for the Fall Drama Teachers Association of Southern California (DTASC) festival.  ·Receiving 9 awards, and 7th place overall at the festival.  ·Reviving the Children’s theater program and performing for all 4th graders in the district.  · Initiating 32 members into the International Thespian Society  ·Having 11 members of the Thespian Society earn Scholar recognitions (maintaining a 3.5 GPA), and 5 members earn Five Star Thespian status, meaning they’d logged over 300 hours of excellent work within 2 years at ROMS. ·Selling out performances for the spring musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. ·  Earning 10 nominations and 3 awards for our musical from the National Youth Arts Awards.   It was a great and busy year, and the ROMS Thespians were happy to share their accomplishments with the COUSD Board.
