Although the principal constantly boasts about MV's top scores, the school underperforms, given the socioeconomic background of its students. The students are not given the impression from administration that academics counts. To get a truly good education here, your student must already be a motivated top performer and enroll in AP classes - quality of non-AP classes is highly variable, particularly in the English department. If your student has a mild - moderate learning disability, expect no help from administration unless you are aggressive. Having said that, many of the teachers are excellent and the vast majority are willing to work with a concerned parent.

Although the test scores in this public high school are not the highest in the area, they are very high and consistently high. Most faculty receive good reviews, and the staff is generally stable. The range of courses, including science and computer/computing courses, is as good or better than the best in the area.

Great school with great teachers and a host of classes available both to the average Joe and to the hardcore student. There is an affluence of AP classes taught by qualified teachers. Many ECs are available including everything from drama to sports. Parents are not really involved to the extent that they are at other schools.

This school has great programs for both the child going on to a 4 year college or those with other goals. The sports program is strong yet encouraging of all. Due to the growng population the school is bigger than comfortable,however with the new high school in the Doughtery Valley this pressure will be relieved in a few years.

Great quality of academic courses. Many teachers are very caring and knowledgable. Scheduling is dificult for students with AP courses. My son was unable to take part in Wind Ensemble because of yearly conflicts with AP classes.

Great school that holds their students to very high standards. There are multitude of AP courses, clubs etc. offered as well as a great variety of extra curricular activities. Adminisration is lacking, yet MV's teacher is great for the most part.

Monte Vista high school has an extremeley rigorous and demanding curriculum with wonderful teachers and staff members. Students are called on to be independent in their extracuriculars and their individual courseload. There are countless extracurricular activities and sports programs for students to choose from at this school, adding to the quality of life at this school. There is a diverse selection of courses for the students, assuring them the best prospects for their future.

The broad range of subjects offered make this high school a high calibur school. Students have a choice in the direction they wish their areas of study to take them because of the many choices they have both in the classroom and in the extra-curricular area, plus athetics and music.

About the tests


In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
