The teachers take a real interest in each student as an individual and they focus on finding fun and interesting ways to help them learn. They do a great job emphasizing project based learning and the students play a huge part in helping to decide projects they would like to work on. The students are actually excited to go to science class, to work on their projects!
Peregrine has been a second home for my daughter for the last 10 years. Here she has been allowed to safely explore the world, and establish her place in it. She's been introduced to Hinduism,Hobbes vs. Lockeian theory, Don Quixote, percentages, healthy eating, climate change and photosynthesis to name a few topics. The teachers know and respect children and the child's voice, intelligence. In turn, the child develops a love of learning, and a keen sense of who they are. I appreciate the teachers and administration for creating this special nurturing environment.
It takes a rare visionary to create a school. The energy and love for children are that of a parent but multiplied many-fold. Lorie Hammond is this person. My child is on first name basis with her, and they have a relationship due to their shared love of the school. My lucky child will carry Lorie with her out into the world.
Because the teachers know the student, and his/her work so well, the teachers know what the student is capable of, and students are asked to reach. Finding the motivation for each student is a riddle which morphs over time.
Recognition of the disadvantaged, the weak or the under represented is important to the school. Taking on projects to support other children is embraced by the children and institutionally. A single student may put up a sign to collect goods for the poor, and soon the lobby is filled with material. Kindness, true kindness, as compared to the superficial compliment of one's shoes is valued. Older children are paired with younger children in mentoring roles. Listening is valued.
