The Davis community is a safe place to raise a family and the High School offers a solid foundation for students who want to pursue a higher education. With it's wide range of activities and very low crime rate, it is an ideal place for kids that come from priviledged backgrounds. However, it does lack diversity in respect to the ethnic breakdown of the students, teachers and faculty. It can be a difficult school to adjust to if you are a minority student who is from a major metropolitan area. The high school would be a more tolerable place for all, if the school strived for greater diversity.
This is a great school with many excellent academic opportunites for the students.
Balance of athletics and academics. Decent college placement rate.
DHS is a great school that is quickly expanding. There is a focus on all areas of a teenager's development, from athletics to drama to, most importantly, academics. Teachers focus on education and the atmosphere is of a college preperatory academy. I strongly recommend visiting the school. The only thing I would consider is that if your child has not gone to previous Davis schools, it may be a difficult transition as Davis is a tightly knit community and many social groups are preformed.
My childs experience with this school has been exceptional.
The academic programs at this school are wonderful. The teachers are available and willing to help the students. There are many extracurricular activities available. The parental involvement is good.
I have one child at DSHS and she is doing well. However, she is very self-motivated. The quality of her teachers appears inconsistent, and she can cope because she studies a great deal. But some of her friends appear to be getting left behind because they are not motivated studiers. The school is better with high achievers than with average kids
One of the great public high schools of the state! I have had 2 students graduate from here, and have been truly impressed with the quality of the school, teachers, and graduates.
Extremely academic. Lots of pressure is placed on the kids to perform excellently in school -- a b is often considered not good enough, and a 4.0 Is too low sometimes. But...Good school with great test results! i like it, although we are loaded with homework (usually 4-6 hours per night). Not that much drug use if your kid gets into the right group (most groups don't use drugs). Millions of clubs for your child to be part of to boost how great they look on the college apps.
My oldest boy attends Davis Senior High. Davis is a town paralyzed around a single occupation: Education. The largest employer is UC Davis and the next largest employer is the Davis Joint Unified School District. I would guess that perhaps more than half of the students are faculty brats of some sort. No one will laugh at you if you try to do well in school. Competition is heavy duty which is good if you like to compete. Consequently, students have an outstanding peer environment...but top grades are tough to get. The strongest aspect of the school is the academic caliber of your fellow students. Because of the local demographics, parent involvement is unbelievably strong. Extracurricular activities are more than plentiful. Local housing values reflect the quality of the school system. Ninety percent of graduates attend a two or four year college.
