I have worked at this school for the last 4 years and I love it. It is not a perfect school, but it is the best school I've ever worked at. Most of the teachers will go above and beyond for their students. Parents are always welcome. I am very happy to be working at Southwest!

Academic is good, SWHS has a dedicated teachers that motivate students, at the beginning I was concern, but the school follows the district or government programs, it depends of each student. The school is bicultural /bilingual due to the closest with Mexico and helps each student to make the transition to a new country less painful w/ second language programs The school has mariachi and Mexican folklore dance among others but it will be good add piano lessons, electrical guitar that many young people like. Sports are available basket, soccer and tennis but you need to motivate the students to participate (tennis courts need maintenance as well that foot ball stadium) There is the MECHA assoc where young kids get together helping to their school and persons who need it. My involvement is not that close due to my work but I ask my daughter about any news and attending to some meetings w/teachers.

It has a great GATE and AP program. it also offers more than 25 sports and clubs to join. The teachers are o.k. The principal is fair and does listen to the alumni. There are lots of activities and it has great classrooms and the teachers are almost perfect.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
