In the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD), students are assigned to schools based on their residence, and there is limited open enrollment at six of the middle schools and five of the high schools. Gifted education services are available for elementary, middle and high school students, and high school students may also attend career-oriented academies. The district has alternative schools for at-risk students and also provides special education services.Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district.
