Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My grandson came to AR from another system many miles away. In the previous system he had been bullied and seemed to have been "written off" as someone who could not learn. At AR he found no bullies, every student wants to go to school, friends, and significant attention to his learning needs. He is making good progress and he is happy to go to school. Great learning environment!

This school opened the door for me to many possibilities and opportunities that I would otherwise have never had access to. In my 3 years there, I learned not only academic things, but about myself. I was taught to challenge everything I believe in, and instead of making me confused and lost, this process has made my beliefs and ideologies stronger. I earned my Associates Degree one month before my high school diploma at the age of 17. I then went on to CSU Sacramento and earned my Bachelors in English with a Minor in Theatre in just three years' time. I graduated from college at the age of 20, and now I plan to get my credential and be a teacher. Without AR's amazing support system, I would not be where I am today. Thank you for everything, AR. I hope one day to work there myself! :)

Does not promote the field of learning i am interested in and suggests i wait until college to take the classes... i take that as discouragement... definitely switching ASAP

Academy of the Redwoods (fully funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) is an awesome chance for high school students to achieve academic excellence. If a student applies themselves they can graduate with an associate's degree AND a high school diploma !! The campus is clean and beautiful. The teachers are all inspired and caring. We are so happy with our choice.

This exceptional school manages to support not only the "brainy" students who desire to continue their education in great universities; it supports those who are interested in learning a trade as well. The students are guided to respect self and others, and to consider the consequences of their actions. The daily announcements and monthly meetings with the teachers and the principal keep the parents well informed. There are many opportunities to get involved, to get inspired and to make friends in a school that doesn't have cliques.

My son is a Freshman at AR and I have to say so far they are far and away the best choice in our area for students who are serious about school. The staff, and students have created a wonderful, caring community.

It allowed me to receive my Associate's Degree and High School Diploma in the same year and oddly enough, in that order.

I feel so fortunate this program exists in our area. My daughter just completed her first year and has found it to be challenging and rewarding. Her teachers interact well with the students and have high standards and expectations--people respond to expectations! The curriculum is taught creatively and students are encouraged to discuss and debate the issues. The Aministration has created a great balance of social opportunities through regularly held dances and after-school clubs. Most of all, I see my daughter developing great self-confidence. She has discovered her voice.

The Academy is by far the best schools in Humboldt County. Compared to a year at FUHS it is complete and utter heaven. I am actually being challenged in my classes and I am able to take college classes as well. THere are no clique or social groups at AR, just a bunch of kids who all share the same passion for education. I recomend this school to all students who are looking for a succesful future!

Academy of the Redwoods is an all inclusive school that creates a place where students can excel, feel safe and contribute to the community at large. Kids who would not be successful at comprehensive sites find their home at AR and go on to make the world a better place. The staff cares about the students, the school and each other. It's a vigorous and intense education but students also enjoy themselves while learning through project based learning.

Academy of the Redwoods (AR) is an Amazing school. It is the best school I have ever been to. I've only been there one year, and I do not want to leave. Everything about it is amazing. At AR you learn things that most people don't in highschool. Like being in a community, being an individual, being an individual in society... I have learned so many things in one year that it is just amazing. I went in as one of the shy kids that kept to herself, and I have become an individual that can speak her opinion. It is not just the things you learn that make AR so amazing. The morals and ethics are outstanding. What the school is based off of, what it was created to be, It's very foundation; is insperational. There is also the sense of belonging that just makes everyone your family.

This is a school for academically motivated students who aren't into the conventional 'big box' high school experience. -Highest API for any high school in Humboldt county. -Classes with community college students (and the possibility of up to 2 years college classes under your belt by the time you've graduated from 12th grade). -Diverse student body in terms of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. -Dedicated instructors and caring administrators. There are no organized team sports (although there is a tennis club) and being mature enough to attend college classes with adults has proven a challenge to some students' families, but the majority of parents are thrilled with AR and the opportunity it offers bright high school students to excel.

I have two children attending AR, one of which was in the beginning class. The requirement of all students is the same: be self-starters, challenge yourself, be as mature as you can be and still have fun, learn, learn, learn! The major challenge to incoming students is social not academic: the school is co-located on a community college campus, which allows the students to take college classes easily. AR and CR, the college, have worked out most of the difficulties, and this year (2008) we're graduating high school seniors with AA or AS degrees! Great school for the bright child.

I am a student at Academy of the Redwoods. I am graduating this year, with both my high school diploma as well as 63.5 college units, which earns an AA degree. I have been at this school since the first day it existed. In the first year, we had only one class, the freshmen. The transition from 8th grade to college was hard, but the results of the stress were spectacular. We developed as a family, each of us the only ones knowing what the others were going through. We had an amazing staff, who gave us their all; they were always there for us. This school was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I have a daughter who attends AR. This will be her Senior year. I can not say enough good things about the academics, staff and school. We have been extremely happy and feel blessed that AR was availble for our daughter. She will graduate in may with her Associates Degree and her High School diploma!

Fortuna High, though we do respect their rigid structure, couldn't step in and take over what is being done. Yes, there does seem to be a 'lack of stucture' as some would put it, especially with the third years. Myself, being in this group would like to point out: most of us are done with high school classes, we have to be in 'high school' for 1,200 minutes every week to be considered by the state a 'high school student'. Since some of us don't have high school classes, we sign in and 'be productive'. We are full-time college students and can't be expected to take redundant classes which do nothing for us. Stress is a constant companion for us; we need this time to do our work. I'm sorry if our lack of bells offends you, but this is where we choose to learn. Don't like it? Go to FUHS.

I'm currently a student at Academy of the Redwoods. I have been attending since the school started and it is rather great. I've figured though that it is not for me. The teachers are excellent at AR. This is our third year and we have gained more teachers. The staff at AR has extended quite a bit since our first year. We have Sacha Stallman teaching Biology this year, all by herself. We have Liz McHugh teaching Health and also co-teaching with Michael Galli, Steve Irwin, and Tara Nuth in the Humanities department, which is the History and English subjects combined. In Math we have Betsy Buchanan teaching Geometry and Algebra 1 and Pam Barkdull teaching Algebra 2. Tara Nuth also shoulders the Economics/American Government class this year. It's an excellent school for anyone wanting to be challenged.

I was a previous student at AR when it was first made. I unfortunately move-across the U.S.- to a different school. But my love for AR will never die, being how the teachers actually cared about the individual student needs, they actually taught the students in a great learning way. Irwin, Pam, Bruce and Keri always were there as a teacher but not just your average teacher from any ol' highschool. My experience at the Academy was one I had always dreamed about. The ciriculum was to my level, the teaching styles varried, and it wasn't the normal blah blah blah stuff. I recomend Academy of the Redwoods to anyone who can't fit in in a regular school enviroment, who has special needs, or just rather something new. Always a Wolf your Wolffie(Brianna).

Although the school is a great opportunity for the students and they are no doubt excelling in their courses, there is an obvious lack of organization from the H.S. administration on up to the college administration. Hopefully this will be resolved as the school matures. The lack of communication between the two administrations is evident and students should not be made to suffer as a result. This is an early college high school, so when students don't get their college classes for lack of organization and cooperation on the administrations part, it makes the early college part of the high school meaningless. The students do enjoy the higher tempo of the course work and there are activities to keep the students involved. Overall, I am pleased, but the administration level has to kick it up a notch to ensure the success of the program.

My child is a second year student. She struggles, but for the most part, she is doing ok. The work load is a lot. The school gives time in the childs day, for the ones that need that extra help with the workload. I have personally been in contact with the principal from time to time, and he seems to be on top of things. This school is a wonderful opportunity for these children.
