School is very much parent hands on. Some of the teachers are getting close to retirement so changes are coming. Principal leadership is minimal and justs want to cover the issues and not take an active roll. My student was able to live on field trips what he learned in books. This is the schools strength.
The Middle School teachers assign less homework and grade more easily than other middle schools in the area. They do not have enough money for very good electives. They are short on money for PE equipment. There is HA English, but not HA math or science. The science teacher is excellent however, and finds money for good equipment. Likewise, the English teacher is wonderful. She has an excellent library of books the children love and encourages its use by giving plenty of time for reading of the children's choice and rewards for reading as well. There are fewer high achieving students than at nearby large schools. There are only about 120 seventh and eighth grade students, a close-knit community.
This is a wonderful school. The field trips and way of learning have proven priceless to our family!
This school has some how managed to hold on to what is good and important in education. They continue to look at the whole child remembering that children are much more than test scores. The funny part is that by having a well rounded program high test scores follow. Parents take time to be a part of their children's school environment and the rewards are wonderful to behold.
Orangevale Open school is possibly one of the greatest schools you'll ever be a part of (that is if you join). Their is such colorful scenery and people and I'm am proud to be a part of the great way they bring on education
The requirement that parents do 2 hours per week in support of the classroom is great. Most of the parents get to know the kids, giving the school more of a community feeling than other schools. If 'it takes a village to raise a child,' then this school has more of a village feel than most schools. The 7/8 option is good too--why add a junior high transition? Young life is complicated enough!
Orangevale Open is a unique program of developmental learning. Parents must be willing to participate actively in every aspect of their children's learning process. There is also money involved, as these children go on extensive field trips and have many 'extras' in the classrooms. We just love it the small town feel of it.
My 3 children attended Orangevale Open from K-8th grade. All are honors students (2 now juniors and 1 is in college) and I largely credit the Orangevale Open teachers, teaching philosophy and volunteering parents for that. Orangevale Open s not for everyone. Parents must be willing to be involved in their child s education a few hours a week and children must fulfill their classroom obligations. This parent involvement provided my children with the 1:1 assistance they needed and provided me with many rewarding memories. The classroom contracts were challenging and I appreciated the teacher/parent meetings to discuss activities and student progress. All parents should be involved in their child s education and this is a great place to do it.
I think Orangevale Open is not for everyone. My youngest daughter and son both went to school there for 2 years. My oldest son went for jr High. My youngest son has learning disability. He was just passed over. The disabilities were not addresses and his needs where not met. My daughter just did great there. When we transfered her to a different school with her brother. The teacher told me that Orangevale had done an excellent job of preparing her for the 4th grade. And as far as the 7 and 8 grade progarm. I will be sending my daughter back for her Jr high school years. She is so looking forward to it. Orangevale Open is not for everyone. And is not for kids that need even a 'Little extra help'.
My 2 youngest children attended Orangevale Open K-8 and have been very successful, both graduated from college and have great jobs. Orangevale taught them to volunteer and always try to help others. I think that's an asset. Over the years I've noticed that a high percentage of top students in the nearby high schools have come from Orangevale Open and not just scholastically. Many have been student body presidents and newspaper editors.
Orangevale is a 'Open' structure school. The parents are required to volunteer a large amount of time each week. The students that leave orangevale do well in the future. Orangevale is a small school K-8 and is a very in touch enviornment. I think the previous person must have confused Orangevale Open School with one of the other schools in the community of Orangevale.
Orangevale doesn't seem to be teaching the life skills necessary for their students to succeed later in life. They are not teaching respect for their elders or people in authority. Everything is up for discussion. I've seen so many kids come out of this school and end up getting in trouble either in school, work, or otherwise, because they seem to be expecting the same leanency that was given them by everyone at orangevale. They seem to be so focused on PC that they seem to forget the big picture of teaching the students life skills.
