Ferndale has just been selected as a 'California Distinguished School' again! It is a fairly small school with large school benefits. There is a large computer lab, a fantastic music program with an accomplished teacher presenting a great band and outstanding choir and a Spanish teacher that organizes and hosts a big Cinco de Mayo festival every year, providing authentic ethnic costumes, teaching and presenting ethnic dances from different areas of Mexico to other schools and the public. The entire town turns out for the parade and fiesta. The school encourages social responsibility and is actively involved in recycling everything from paper to food. If two students have an altercation the principal will often assign them a job that requires them to work together in agreement to get said task accomplished. Parents get involved in school activities. Organized baseball, football, cheerleading, clubs, soccer are some extra-curricular activities.

Ferndale elementary's academics are very well. There isn't many kids here, so it provides a good learning inviorment. There is a music program, arts night and the school provides basketball. In the junior high volleyball, cheerleading are also avalible. Not through the school are soccer, track, wrestling, and football, which are very popular and aren't hard to join. Also cinco de mayo, a triditonal mexican dance is offered. The kids preform infornt of other schools in humboldt county. The principle, paul meyers, is wonderful and very involved. He's the best principal so far if you ask me. Parents can volenteer in the classrooms, or for sports programs. At ferndale the community helps out alot. They purchase goods the 8th grade sells for their trip to sanfrancisco and sacramento everyyear. The kindergardeners also get a jumpstart at education with their 8th grade buddies who meet with them every thursday.
