Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

So I am not a huge fan of the public school system in California. It is a over bloated bureaucracy that is beholden to the special interests of the teachers union and not the needs of the students. That said, Mattos is a true gem of a school. It is a smaller, old style neighborhood school where the students grow up together, head to Junior high and high school together. The current principal is a terrific leader committed to uniting her teaching team as much as she is to each individual student. She knows the students names, their dispositions, strengths and weaknesses, and treats them with respect while challenging hem to be the best students and classmates they can be. She is a wonderful leader for the school. The teaching staff this year is focused and strong! There is only one bad teacher at Mattos (a notoriously awful 2nd grade teacher), but the others are all committed, positive, strong educational guides for the students! Mattos has an AMAZING resource teacher, INCREDIBLE SDC teachers, and FABULOUS PE teacher. And the school has tons of parent volunteers and a very involved strong PTA that funds. This school is truly an excellent elementary school!

Yet again, administration has changed. This time the focus seems to be on monetary gain, $60 for a prepackaged "deal" of school supplies. This supply list consists of single items that can be purchased in bulk at a cheaper price. Not only that, the school is now conducting future kindergarten interviews. When you ask parents what they think of it, they welcome the idea because it would attract parents with a background in science and that it would raise property value. The link I see in admitting a child with qualified parents is the higher income the person has with that type of education which is essential to raising more money. Other parents without a science background can be benefitial too. If there are docents to the music program who do not have a background in music, surely docents in science can be possible if the focus is truly educating the children about science. This is a public school that is supposedly open to all types of children. If there is an issue with funding the school, start with educating yourself about social policies. Make changes in the laws that regulate school funding, not with the background of a child's parent. Exercise your right to vote!

This is the 4th elementary school I have been aquainted with and our 3rd year at Mattos. I have had a child in every grade except 1st. I am sooo pleased with the teachers and the parent involvement. My children have not experience any bullying. I am pleased with the quality of their education and all the extra curricular activities that are offered. My children are very happy at Mattos.

We started kindergarten this year, and in less than a month, they moved our child from an AM to a PM class. Not knowing what to expect, except hoping that it would work out for the best since ratio would be much smaller (1:21 compared to 1:30 in previous class), so far it has been good! The new teacher is resourceful and nurturing. Students seem engaged and respectful toward one another whenever I check in the classroom or observe in the playground. The new principal seems interested in interacting with parents and students. I see a lot of parent involvement at Mattos, but I hope the kindergarteners will also get some music and science lessons that they hope to introduce into the classrooms this year.

Not real impressed with the way the school handles conflict. Bullying has been an issue.

Until this school year, 2013-2014, the Science Magnet program has been non existent. The district has used the title of a science magnet school to increase its attendance. Mattos was slated to be closed due to low enrollment numbers. There simply are not enough families with school age children in the immediate attendance area to maintain it. With a majority of its students residing throughout Fremont you would think the school would embrace being a citywide school. Instead parents and some long time staffers have steadfastly clung to the past and hold on to outdated traditions and values. Mattos is very much a "neighborhood only" type of school, with many parents with "neighborhood only" attitudes. The school has had three principals in the past 3 school years. It has a way to go to bring it in line with current times. Fortunately hope is not lost. Mattos newest principal promises to be its best yet. I'm holding on to the hope that Mattos will rise above during this school year and truly become the school it wants to and claims to be.

You can get the best from this school if you recognize its key strengths. Teachers are great. They are very gentle yet firm and very nurturing. The teachers, staff and the preschool Director do an amazing job. It's an excellent school in a safe suburb. Students are driven and motivated. The most important thing is that you can be smart at this school and be proud of it.

Mattos has great teachers who truly care about their student s education! I have two children who are enrolled in kinder and 1st grade. The school is clean, they really focus on respect, there Jiji math program really boosts the kids skills and most important, there science program has kids learning and exploring more about this wonderful world of ours. I truly believe that my children are getting a quality education in a well-rounded environment.

Great school, I have 2 children that attend. Thanks to our new principal and administration API scores are up. We are very thankful we live in the area & our children can attend this wonderful school.

Our school's API scores just went up 28 points! The new principal is more strict than the previous principal. They do have very different styles but the new principal get things done and is very proactive in pushing the kids to excellence. It might not be for everyone but it is for our family. I will be providing more support to the school to help.

This school used to be one of the most amazing schools. Unfortunately, there was a change in administration and the whole culture of the school has switched from the whole-child perspective to test scores, test scores, test scores. It is sad that the parents are now the ones that make this school dynamic. The teachers are always gossiping with parents about other teachers, sharing their dislike of the new principal, overall unhappiness which permeates to the students. The principal uses a bullhorn during lunch to scream at the kids for cleaning up. She threatens/bullies the students as a form of consequence. It's all a shame! It was such a gem and now it's a piece of coal. sigh.

Our principal, teachers, grounds keeper etc are very involved in the welfare of each student. Our PTA memebers are committed to go the extra 10 miles if necessary for students. The school teaches good values (starting at the kinder level) and these values are posted in the classrooms as well as on folders that are given to the students for homework. Mattos makes a huge (successful) effort to communicate and reach all of the working and work at home parents/grandparents/caregivers and encourage envolvement help the children be as successful as they can be. We have mnay fundraisers and there are many opportunities to gather and make Mattos an even stronger school. GO MATTOS! Big on Science, Safety, Respect, Accountability, Kindness, Collaboration!!

I love John G Mattos because it has a great learning environment. The teachers are very hard working and work very closely with the parents. The parents and the teachers work hard to make it a better environment for their children. This school is like a small community. I would not trade this school for any other. I am very hapy with this school.

Mattos has given my children the opportunity to enhance their science skills through their science magnet program. This money would greatly help out our school and this very important program. My oldest son is autistic and placed at Mattos for their special day classes, he also LOVES science and through the science magnet program it has given him an opportunity to enhance his science knowledge, something he may not have gotten at any other school. This is why I feel Mattos is such a wonderful school, we are lucky to have both our boys attend.

Mattos is one of the best schools in the district, so we were very keen for my niece to attend mattos. Moving her from a private montessori to a public school was not easy but we have no regrets. We believe we made the best choice for her, academically and socially. We had heard some very good things about this school, including lots of parent involvement, excellent after-school programs, and very experienced and caring teachers. More importantly, their science program is the best in the district.

My son's school, John. G. Mattos Elementary is a great school. The freindly staff and teachers create a wonderful and congenial environment for the all round development of all kids. Ethnic diversity is encouraged and thus children at this school learn a great deal about tolerence and acceptance. Being a science magnet school all childern are driven towards exploration and thinking scientifically. Overall a Mattos elementary is a great school to expereince the early and crucial years of schooling.

There are many fun and educational activities for kids K-6. My son who started kinder this year got a 'buddy' from 6th grade who will show him around and visit him periodically. This is a wonderful way to help the younge kids feel welcome and more secure! Thank You Mattos staff and Principal Marsha parker for all you do.

My son was supposed to attend a school closer to our house but I didn't feel like it was challenging enough so I enrolled him into Mattos's Science magnet program. First of all, Mrs. Burgos, the science teacher is fascinating! I know because I'm a parent volunteer for her class. I told her that if science was this interesting when I was in elementary school, I would've been more interested in studying! Mattos has wonderful teachers, principal and staff. The parents are very supportive of their children and of the school. The neighborhood is clean and safe, and last but not least, the library is the best I've ever seen. Thanks to their enthusiastic librarian, Mrs. Baeza, Mattos library has a wonderful selection of books. I could sit there for hours reading all the books I missed out on when I was young! Thanks, Mattos!!!

Mattos is a great school with very caring teachers. My daughter attended an overpriced Catholic school with a not so challenging curriculum. When it was time for my son to start kindergarten, I did some research and found out that Mattos had great ratings. Without hesitation, I applied for the science magnet program and enrolled my son and transferred my daughter. And since then we have been happy ever since.

We are very happy with Mattos! Our family came from an overpriced Catholic school where most of the teachers did not have their teaching credentials. Academically, Mattos is much more challenging and it keeps the kids moving in a accelerating pace. I highly recommend Mattos for any family considering weaving their kids from a private school. Overall, the school is well equipped with extracurricular activities, great teachers and organized staff.

Mattos is an exceptional 'gem' of a school! It has the small feel of a private school - exceptional teachers and quality school work. I took my children out of a private school and placed them at Mattos and have discovered that this school has far superior quality of eduication than the expensive private schoool my children had attended. The children are well prepared for the next grade level and the test scores at this school are very good compared to other elementary schools in the same area.
