I do not have anything good to say about their preschool. I thought because it was a Christian school my son would get the love and discipline needed. I also noticed cameras pointing outside of school allowed safety. However, I think it was simply covering their end. My son was 2 and his first experience at a school. He didn't know how to talk well and it took time for him to feel comfortable with the staff. The teachers he had obviously had their favorites and a few times I came in seeing my son crying or forced to do something, which escalated negative behavior. His behavior went to passive to aggressive. The coordinator was not willing to open for recommendations of positive reinforcement. I took him out immediately......
The school has been largely successful in the academic side of things. My son has excelled and learned so much about math, science and reading. He is also very excited to go to school and participate in all the on campus activities. The one down side I would say is the recent ousting of a very good principal and the secrecy behind it, I was very uneasy about the direction the school was headed with the incoming administration. However none of my questions were directly answered in the latest town hall meeting and that was the first time that has happened in the two years my son has attended the school. Overall a good school academically but, the Superintendent needs to do a more effective job of communicating with parents.
This was my child's first year attending GVCS (K). From the time he began to the end of the school year, I see a lot of improvement. I am thankful for Mrs. May's patience and persistance. Together, we have worked out a system that helped my child's reading and writing skills improve tremendously without the help of a tutor (extra expense). I hope 1st grade for him is just as good (continue to show improvement). I would definitely recommend this school.
Unfortunately, someone had my post removed because I stated something about the staff. I will leave those factual statements alone, and focus on the academics of the school. GVCS is a school that once was of great status for my family and I. Over the last couple of years, things have changed and the regime change seems to be for the better. The unfortunate situation is the concern children for the children are no longer priority #1. Individuals are focused on the principal and her staff...My focus has always been on my children and what is best for them. If I were an outsider looking to come in, I would ask to meet with the pastor and the NEW principal to confirm the status of the school and where they see GVCS in 5 years... Do not waste your time talking with the current office staff as they have decided to leave (for their own personal reasons). Nonetheless, the teachers on the bottom floors are awesome. I cannot speak to the middle school because I am not in those grades. However, if your students are slated for K-3 you are in great hands (Hanaoka, Spainhour, Maxwell, Kondo, and Mrs. E. are the teachers my family have had dealings with) Other than that, I cannot help.
I have 2 girls that presently attend GVCS. One started in kindergarten & the other started in 1st grade. My older daughter is in the 8th grade now and will be graduating June 12th. I am so grateful for the academic and Christian environment this school has provided for both of my children. My daughter was accepted to California Academy of Math & Sciences (CAMS) in part because of the excellent role her math teacher & the staff (Including Mrs. Pickens, the exiled principal) played. My younger child has a 4.0 and has participated in the Math Olympic, Spelling Bee, and the Speech Meet and has done very well. They both participated in sports and the coaches weren't just interested in winning, even though we did win a championship. GO VIKINGS! Coaches focused on Christian character and teamwork. Just because your child goes to a private school doesn't mean parental participation should be less. My communication with the principal was excellent and I feel sorry for those parents & kids who won't get chance to work with her. Hopefully the new principal will have the communication and educational skills of Mrs. Pickens. Her doors were always opened for me & my wife. Love u GVCS!
In response to the post dated May 21st. I completely disagree that parental involvement is discouraged. My daughter has been at the school for a few years and I have been encouraged to participate. In regards to the transition, I think that your opinion is definitely one sided because of your involvement in the church. Your sentiments do not reflect the general opinion of the parents. The staff is invested because they care not because of free tuition. I could not disagree more with you in regards to the principal. I love the school, teachers, and staff. Can't believe you would say the principal wasn't working on behalf of the children. If thats the case, why would your children attend the school? Maybe you were part of the decision to force the current principal out. Lets just see what happens with the changes.......
Honestly, the school wasn't that bad to begin with when it was my first year in Jr. High, but it just went way downhill! The kids are way too sheltered and there are way too many rules that are just pointless! It's too similar to prison in my opinion. In general, the teachers are nice people, but the students are so-so. There is a very large majority of one race and there isn't much of a variety different of people with different ethnic backgrounds. Kindergarten-5th seems very nice, but after that, it's pretty depressing. I think it's good that the kids are protected, but It's overdoing it. The staff is my favorite part of this school by far (janitors, office people, childcare). They're the kindest people out there and are very hard workers. The school is great for teaching kids about Christ, but I'd probably just recommend grades K-5 at the most.
GVCS is a great school!! This is my son's second year there and I couldnt be happier with the school, staff, or curriculum. The second grade teacher Mrs. Maxwell is such an amazing teacher. She truly cares about the childrens well being and also giving them an education that is well advanced and anchored in GOD. The staff is friendly and knows every child, office is well run and very organized, and the campus is clean. My son is challenged daily and he is learning well beyond what other schools teach for the second grade.
I was not impressed, I enrolled my son into the pre-k school and in the 6 months he was enrolled all he did was bring home drawings and crafts every single day. He wasn't being challenged and his teachers agreed and suggested I speak with the principle to see if he could be moved to the 3yr old class for the rest of the school year. She stated that it was not possible, I so removed him within the the next few days. I later learned that Pre-K campus has a developmental curriculum for the students. It provides little academics and teachings and more recess, and arts and crafts. Before I removed him there was serious and dangerous incident that happened across the street from the campus, I was contacted by a family friend who saw my sons school on the news. was very concerned and called the school and no one answered. Luckily my mother was able to leave work to find the police standing guard and the students looked tight in the classrooms. Later that day when I went to pick my son up, non of the staff mentioned or addressed the enormous news and police presence in front of the campus. I would think long and hard before enrolling your child at the pre-k campus.
I would not recommend this school. The teachers are horrendous. They basically teach out of workbooks, and all the grading is done by the students themselves. The older teachers have basically checked out, and have little or no incentive to teach these kids. My son's tests scores have gone down every year since he enrolled in this school. The math program is the worst, most of the students have to have tutors to make up what they are not getting in class. There is no attachment to the kids, they are just bodies in seats. Please send your kids somewhere else, as you would be doing them a huge disservice if you enroll your kids in this school
This is our third year at GVCS and we are very happy so far. I love the discipline and that academic challenge the school presents. The teachers are loving and supportive. The front office and the administration are responsive and friendly. This is a very organized, clean and well-run school. The Parent Teacher Fellowship is active and involved. There is a Town Hall Meeting every year for parents to express their opinions, good or bad and offer suggestions for school improvements. Students who have gradutated from GVCS are now sending their children here. To me that is a very good endorsement. Of course, no school is perfect and you need to find the school that fits your child.
The teachers and staff at GVCS are wonderful. I am proud to be a part of the GVCS family.
my daughter has been @ gvcs for 2 years now, and we are pleased! the teachers and staff have been great. we know that she is learning more about God while gaining solid academics. we are pleased with gvcs, and plan to send all of our children to this school.
Gardena Valley Christian (GVCS) did not meet the overall support I expected from a private school yES It has some good qualities such as clean campus, library, campus cafeteria, but the more important items such as Higher academic support for all student, not just the favorite few, the school failed to see that they are there for the whole student body. When the same student keep receiving the same rewards and neither the teachers or the admin seek to encourage a change well it time to change school. Because all students need to know that they can soar like eagles. GVCS was not the school for /fit for my children. I know there is a school out there that will offer the 'you can , you will, you must make it ' attitude and make sure the student believe the school teachers and staff really mean it.
Tutuon went up- quality of education went down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The tution has gone up every year since my children were there for the last 4 years, but the standars have gone completly down. !
Yes. Most private schools consist of students that are able to work independently and do not need intervention. If the services that your child needs are not available at a particular school, then you must continue searching for the right school. GVCS is a great school. It is not perfect, ofcourse, but the school really does a Great job nurturing, caring, and challenging students.
I was very unhappy with this school. This school functions on a 'one-size fits all' theory. The administration and staff are unwilling to assist students that need reinforcement academically and are not independent learners. I felt unwelcomed!!!!! They need to realize that this world is comprised of differences!!!!
I graduated from Gardena Valley Christian School in the year of 2007. I attended this school since kindergarten. The school is constantly updateing and making changes to better benefit the students education. The school offers many different electives such as art, drama, math study etc. It was good to me. I did well academically at this school and am niow doing very well in high school. I was well prepared for high school academically, physically, spiritually, and socially. If you are looking for a school that providessafety, great education, good morals and alues, and the love of Christ, then Gardena Valley Christian school is right for you.
I have been involved with GVCS for nearly 13 years, and am an alumnus of the school. GVCS provided me with a strong academic foundation while showing me the love of Christ. The school has various sports, before and afterschool care, a loving staff, excellent academic standards, and provides a safe, nurturing environment. In all my years at GVCS, the teachers never failed to offer extra help to me when I needed it, and they were always eager to help me excel in my education. The current principal, Mrs. Pickens has been at the school for many years, and truly cares about the students. I highly recommend GVCS to anyone looking for a safe, high-quality education for their children.
My child received a superior education in a very caring environment. She was well prepared for high school. Great teachers inspired her to write, sing and love others.
