Children are watched closely for any struggles so they can be caught early and help can be given to them so they can have success in school. I have had 2 of my boys attend VW and the teachers were on top of their learning disabilities from the start. I feel the teachers and the new principal, Mrs. Provost really care about the success of my children.

My kid goes emersion JDL program there. Teachers are great and take care of kids. We are very happy for teachers and parents involved classes and volunteer work. Hearing great things about principal than previous principal from parents. only thing school is too many students and not happy about lunch menu at school. Awful for picking up and dropping off students. You need to have 15 min extra time to drop kids off for dropping / picking up line. Too crowded. That is why my review is 4 star. Teachers and school themselves are great I think.

what makes a great school? well a whole lot, a high API does not necessarily mean a good school overall. There are certain etnic groups attending this school who are simply grade pushers. the school is over crowded, thanks to the same group of people who will do anything to get in, I believe everysingle residence in the area has some child enrolled in there. parent involvement is superb, and again the school is playing extreme favoritism with these families. God forbid if you are a working parent who don't have time to sit around and mingle and chat and cut collored paper over coffee... then nobody knows who your child is and what your needs are... the previous principal never gave us an appntmt. to share our concerns with her, the new one is much approachable, but we will be graduating this year and the concerns are too old too be solved.

Our daughter has finished 4 years at VWS and our son two years in the Japanese Dual Language program. This school is truly OUTSTANDING! Teacher experiences have all been good and mostly outstanding. There is a HUGE parent involvement in the school, far beyond what I ever saw with my four grown kids anywhere. The few complaints in reviews are not indicative of the overall experience at the school and sound like a few people going overboard with a minor personal experience with an individual or personality differences. I know Mrs. Buhl quite well and while some feel she is distant or uncaring, my opinion is she has always worked hard to make VWS the "best" (and she is very overworked). FYI, she has been promoted up into the school district and a new principal begins this school year, and she is a very kind and involved educator.

We love Verdugo Woodlands! Our daughter is enrolled in the Japanese Dual Language Program, which is amazing. Great teachers and staff, and LOTS of parent involvement.

This school has quite a few very lazy teachers and principal doesn't want to to anything about it. I have reported it to the principal but she was very negative about it. She is there to protect the lazy teacher not the students who suffered under the lazy teacher. I moved out from this school district. I would say 20% of the teachers are good.

We moved out of the district a few weeks ago and realized our 3rd grader still had money on her lunch account. I called the school and was redirected to food services. Found out we had about $10 left on the account and were told we couldn't get the money back because the bank charged $15 to do a refund. I asked if the money could be transfered to her new school and was told "no". Are you kidding me!!! I ended up having the money transfered to the account of one of the students in her class. This is absolutely ridiculous!

Verdugo Woodlands is a fantastic school with amazing parent involvement and dedicated and creative teachers and staff! Many arts programs are offered to students, as well. Love this school!

VW is a terrific school. My children have thrived, even when challenged. The administration is very good. Mrs Buhl is actually a very likable and caring principle. She has a huge job and little assistance. If you are pleseant and get involved, you will feel much more a part of the family. As for Pat, she is lovely and has taken great care of my entire family. Again, these hard working people need to be given some respect and understanding. They are dealing with 600 children and their families. I recommend involvement in volunteering in the classroom, help with the fundraising, attend the PTA and WAVE mtgs, get informed and involved!

My daughter is a second grader at VW and although the teachers at the school are great the principal Mrs. Buhl comes across as very insincere and cold. She is also not very accessible. The front staff is also very unpleasant, Pat the secretary is often rude and standoffish. She needs to retire!

My child completed kindergarten and first grade at VW. It's a very good school. The first grade teachers collaborate, so the curriculum is consistent across the board. The active PTA works to provide art and music programs during class. Out of class, the PTA presents drama programs, and helps set up optional after-school programs like chess, art, orchestra, etc. Another plus, is there is after school childcare onsite.

I think it is a great school and teaches kids a good education and leads them the right way they need to go in order to have a good future and a successful career.

VW is a great school. My son was supposed to go to another school but it was overcrowded so he was transferred to Verdugo for kindergarten. I'm so happy that he's a student at Verdugo. I can tell that the teachers really care about the students and the parents are really involved at every level. Also academically, this school ranks pretty well and that's also very important to me. Overall, I'm really happy with this school and plan to continue his education at VW through 6th grade.

The school has been around since the early 1900s and is the living image of an old-fashioned, yet academically-advanced elementary school. People from all over are flocking to buy property in the area just to send their kids here. It is a wonderful public school, never has been year-round unlike its neighbor schools, and has a warm, friendly, family atmosphere. It is a 2000s elementary school with a 1950s comfortable feel.

My kids attended preschool, kindergarten and now going to the first grade at Verdugo Woodlands. I have to say that I am very pleased with the school, teachers and overall progress of my kids.The principal knows each kid by name, I think that says a lot about the school.They have the best afterschool care program where my kids made so many friends, the teachers are great they treat each child like their own.It is a great school and I would recommend it to everybody. We were only at Verdugo Woodlands for our daughter's kindergarten year. We moved and spent 1st grade at another school. All I can say is I wish every day we could go back to VW. It had everything going for it (and still does). A stellar, caring Principal who treated each child as if her own, great teachers, great parents. All working together. What more can I say?

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
