I agree with the previous review. This school is completely over rated. The teachers are totally average. They don't provide challenges for above average students. They do however put on a spectacular show for open house. NOTHING BUT A SHOW. My two kids love this school. My daughter who is in second grade is totally bored, but she's happy I guess. Upper grade boy is content. They just wish they could actually LEARN something new. Overall I'm just happy they are in a safe environment. This is supposedly as good as it gets....
We love Van Gogh, teachers, new principle, everything is the best!!!! My children are so happy with this school as we are!!!! Thank you to all hard worker teachers, principle, and PTO as well to make the school BEST!!!!!!
Overall, the school is over rated. The only reason Van Gogh thrives is because of the ongoing parental support, both at home and at school. The parents who run the PTO do a fantastic job; they are fair with all grade levels and extremely organized. The teachers are okay. They are not better than any other LAUSD teacher. There are a few teachers who provide a rigorous curriculum. The new principal seems approachable and genuine.
Van Gogh was our number one choice when scouting public schools for our son. Great extra-curricular programs round out an excellent staff and group of teachers. My son is thriving, and I can't talk more highly of this place. Excellent location, as well.
Van Gogh is a hidden gem. From principal leadership to parental involvement, the school is top notch and I feel fortunate that my children are enjoying such a great elementary school experience.
Van Gogh is a great school with awesome parent that volunteer for every event and help in any way they can. The teachers are great they go out of their way to make our kids education their number 1 priority . Students are polite and thankful of the parents who are in the school yard and classrooms. I consider myself lucky to be part of Van Gogh family.
I am fortunate that this is my home school, and moved into the neighborhood over 10 years ago before kids were even considered. Van Gogh is a hidden gem in the North Valley. Their API scores are on par with the "Magnet school down the street." considering we have English Language Learners and others factored in. Love the PTO - they welcome everyone with open arms, and the parental involvement is phenomenal. The new principal is also very focused on providing a safe, nurturing environment for our kids (she had big shoes to fill after Principal Gundersen retired at the end of the 2012-13 academic year). As for "highly gifted kids" - my daughter was also identified as "highly gifted" and IS being challenged in the classroom. At this age, yes, being challenged is important, but so is their socialization and learning to work/share/get along with others. I refuse to steal her childhood for the sake of academics. Sometimes we forget to let our kids be kids, and this school provides a nice balance of academics and socialization. I also love that there is an on-site YMCA program since I am a working parent, and would rather have supervised care afterschool vs. the YS.
My two children came from a private preschool in the Valley. I honestly did not think they would receive a well-rounded and balanced education through LAUSD. I could not be happier with Van Gogh Charter!! The Principal, teachers and staff all work so hard and really create an enriching environment. We have a wonderful Art, Music and Physical Education program led by caring and professional staff. Thank you for paving the way for their future.
Yeah I know that they don't really make much of an effort to accommodate those who are truly highly gifted like my kids but at least most of the teachers at this school are for advanced learners and really push our children to meet their highest expectations! They offer enrichment after school programs and the entire staff is very envolved in parents needs and are always taking in new suggestions to perform even better each day! I live 30 mins away from this school yet I still refuse to change to a much closer one because no school could possibly be at Van Gogh's level! I must say though that the best teacher is Mrs. Reinhart from second grade, she truly made a huge difference in our lives, specially for my son who has autism. I'll always be grateful to her.
Thank you Ms. Escobar for everything. My son loves her so much. Great teachers. Good Principle. Friendly staff. Good school to go to.
Van Gogh is not only a phenominal school but the parent involment is exeptional. I hesitated in pulling my son out of private school but it was the BEST decision I've made. He not only loves going to school but loves his kindergarten teacher. Thank you Ms. Weinstein for making it an easy transition for him and for making it a great experience for all of us.
This school does not have enough resources for the truly gifted student. Pulled my child out and home schooled instead. Minor attempt was made to meet my child's needs (by needs I mean because he was ahead not behind). Glad to read that so many others are having a much different experience.
I am having great experiences at Van Gogh Charter School. We are in our 2nd year here. The principal has an open-door policy, and is always visible. The PTO is warm, and welcoming of everyone. The teachers are truly invested in the students, and the students generally seem happy to be their. I feel my daughter is receiving a wonderful education at Van Gogh. The school has a small-town/community feel. This makes it easy to get to know the kids and parents, which helps also keep our campus safe. I highly recommend Van Gogh Charter School.
Van Gogh is the best School in neighborhood! My daughter is about to graduate and happy all those wonderful years. Nice staff, teachers and principal. Strongly recommend to everyone!
My son is currently a kindergarten student at Van Gogh, and my husband and I are so impressed at how the school is run. The principal, Mrs. Gunderson is very nice and approachable, and she really knows how t I run the school. Mrs. Serobyan, my son's teacher has a real good handle on her class. She is very organized, and my son loves her! Not to mention that my son is flourishing and loves going and being at school. We couldn't be happier with the school.
What an absolute great school!! We took our daughter out of a pricey private school with much hesitation, only to be thrilled with the stellar education Van Gogh offers. From the principal, to the teachers, to the PTO and the families our family was welcomed with open arms, which I had not expected in a public school setting. The sense of community is outstanding. The only thing I regret is that my daughter didn't start sooner!
This school is amazing! My kids love Van Gogh, as do I. There is a place for students of all ability levels, including special education. ALL kids thrive here. The teachers are both dedicated and hard-working. The principal is a gem, as well. I have to give kudos to the special education program at Van Gogh. You cannot go wrong.
Van Gogh is a phenominal school on all counts! Great leadership, great teachers, and great family community!
There's something really special about this amazing school. Everyone from the teachers to the administration to the parents are friendly, warm and welcoming. The incredible principle has set a precedence of strong leadership from the top down. My daughter loves going to school every morning and loves to talk about her day once I pick her up. The curriculum is enriched with creative teaching and integrates all facets of the arts to entice an appetite to learn. My daughter's kindergarten teacher has a genuine passion for teaching that can't be denied. She cares about each and every one of her students and welcomes parental participation. She looks for the strengths in her students and know how to nourish those traits. We feel very fortunate to be a part of this wonderful school.
Amazing school... exceptional teaching strategies that work wonders with kids. The teachers have the knowledge, support and abilities to be able to keep all their students at a level of learning that is just superb. Students with difficulties in learning are made sure they get what they need, the extra time and effort is there! And the principal is very involved, always thinking of creative ways to make the school stomp through budget cuts and be there for staff and students. No one wants to leave this caring and warm school, where PTO is very strong, welcoming and friendly. Always thinking what is the best for the kids and staff in the school. Love the "bonding and friendships" in the entire school. Highly recommend to everyone!
