I will be moving from Tahoe next year, my daughter has attended a rating 10 (LT Environmental Science Magnet School) school here since Kindergarten, I am zoned for a rating 5 school and am concerned about sending her there, even though it's only 400 feet from my place I will be living. I was wondering if they allow inter-district transfers, I will be living 2 miles from this school.

I'm sold on the school. Great resources. The teachers are amazing....average tenure is about 10 years. The parents still irk me, but I've been checking out various private schools in the area, and they have nothing over South, except for the prestige. And boy, if they ever lose that, they're done.

It actually lives up to all the hype! Better than we could have hoped for! Great kids, excellent teachers, involved parents led by our incredible principal.

My oldest daughter just graduated from South School, having attended from Kindergarten. Her final two years at South were excellent preparation for Middle School. The emphasis on study skills and differentiated learning is valuable and effective. The newly adopted science program is solid and popular with the students; South also encourages all students to participate in it's annual Science Fair (mandatory in 4th and 5th). In my opinion, the school has made great strides under Mrs. Fletcher's leadership over the past three years. She is a 'principled' Principal and a strong leader. The active and spirited parent volunteers are a contribution to the school. Teachers are dedicated and effective; we've had some that will always have a place in our hearts and memories of South.

What is impressive about West School is that the teaching team committment is 100%. Many of the teachers have taught at this school for over 10 years - and did not retain their position because of tenure - so there is no dead-wood. Parental involvement is extremely high - compared to my experience in Palo Alto. The school offers a structured education very critical for elementary education - I believe this is much better compared to the Nueva curriculum.
