Hoopa Valley High School

HHS is conscientious of the local community and culture's and incorporated this into the school, to provide student with a strong pride in self and Tribe's. We have caring administrators, teachers, and staff. Many of our past students have returned to HHS as teachers and administrators. Even the campus design (art) demonstrates pride in community and students

I have had three children go thru this school and have a sophmore in it now. The teachers are great put the administration is aweful. Its all politics and who you know to whether you get hired or not. There is enough follow thru and thought put into hiring admin staff. I graduated from this school in 82. Compared to that time Hoopa High has improved 200%. There are no gangs, drugs are about the same as anywhere else, no discrimination. There is a little of all races at Hoopa. Sports is a huge thing in Hoopa. Kids are strongly encouraged to get join sports. Not much parent involement unless it has to do with sports and then it is iffy, they might show up, they might not. Over all, a good school with GREAT teachers.

You get what you are willing to put into the education, activites, as parents and students. (I'm getting B's and A's in my first quarter), and most of the students that graduated this past year are attending college. The school does suffer from an unfair bad reputation. The size of the school allows for close relationships between students, teachers, and administrators. The teachers are great, truly care about the students, and in for the long haul. They go out of their way for their students, though the school has a high turnover in administration. I believe that the school attracts a certain type of administrator from outside the rural area that is unprepared for the unique dynamics of this school. Some kind of cultural awareness training is needed, or a local person in administration.

Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of parent involvement, and there are just a few teachers that care about the quality of their teaching. No one want to rock the boat. Would love to see a shake-up, someone with vision, and a love for teaching and children take this administration over. School is floundering due to poor district administration. Monies lost due to missing deadlines for grants. They can't seem to get and keep quality personnel. There is too much friction within the school itself, between the employees and district. Morale is low, which in turn, directly affects the teaching quality. School is far behind any other, academically, in this area. Students are passed, regardless of their ability, and students with special needs have not had their needs met. The Resource Program has improved, due to a transfer of mediocre personnel. Hopefully, this will continue to improve.

What has happened to HVHS is very sad. My children all attended school there in the past and received a very good education. Due to a lack of leadership from the district administration, over spending (not on direct services to students), and lack of parent involvement, the school has lost it's way. The students are being sacraficed by the failure of the adults intrusted to set policy and demand accountability of all employees.

Our five children attended Hoopa High and suffered under similar circumstances. A couple got excellent grades and went on to higher education. A couple were encouraged to rebel and drop out. They did and they too went on to higher education. The last was inflicted with poor grades under a climate of repression and political tension wielded by the teachers' union. The curriculum is presented in a rather mundane and uninteresting manner. There is little that is challenging academically. The only hope is that there is a small core group of teachers and counselors who are truly dedicated to education. They truly want to teach well and improve the school. A new principal has just been hired and we are full of hope and prayer.
